you mention the distinct evolution of nirnroot after sun's death in the first era..... ...but don't tie the bioluminescence and bioacoustics to it? no speculation that the light and sound evolved to attract pollinators in the absence of natural light?

Also, the Nirnroot having so much magicka stored in them that they need to lose excessive amounts of it for their survival. This would suggest that there's an additional property to magicka that could potentially mean that, simply having too much of it could potentially kill you. This could also be a new avenue for new spells, most notably with destruction spells. [EDIT] I'd also like to see how certain people end up becoming sorcerers [Daggerfall and Oblivion] rather than standard mages.

I certainly didn't expect to hear about "bioluminescence" or "bioacoustics" when discussing elder scrolls lore but that was a nice touch relating something that is relevant from our universe. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thank you

It probably glows due to some relationship with species of insects. I could be wrong on it, but I'm pretty sure there's plant species irl that attract insects that eat the insects that eat the plant. It could be the same with Nirnroot. As for the sound, It could have something to do with the Spriggons.

All plants produce sound, however its in ultrasound and additionally its about as loud as a human conversation, this sound can also change depending on the plants health, if you touch it, and if you damage it (they scream). despite it not being in human hearing range, bats and bugs can hear it! Which is why they can accurately pick the best fruits to eat

Maybe the sound and light produced by the Nirnroot is its way of attracting humanoids to pick it and thus spread its seeds or spores across the land. Personally I think Nirnroot is more of a fern and reproduces using spores.

the sound and glow might even be a form of resonance from lorkhans heart (a heartbeat being vibrations, effecting the entire world, because it is divine influence, but we can only hear the 'faint echoes' of the nirnroots ringing, and see the glow steadily pulsating to the beat of the heart itself, far far away or deep underground letting us know, that lorkhans heart is still beating somewhere) the ashes of red mountain were affected by lorkhans heart and pieces of the mountain itself became the heart stones we find in solstheim.... the very place where we can find the giant nirnroots as well... and lorkhans dark heart is said to be somewhere, -or at least have been somewhere underneath blackreach ... where the crimson nirnroots reside, and they have increased properties ... i wonder why ... because they are closer to one of the hearts, the dark heart... hence they become red with no light from sun, and the influence of lorkhans heart corrupted by namira (the darkness seeping from the void itself) :p

Nirnroot evolved to survive in ashy soil with a blotted out sun, so it probably isn’t used to getting more energy from the sun since it is not blocked out, thus it produces the sound. Idk just my two cents

This is fascinating! Would anyone know if Nirnroot has a real-life species counterpart? I'm a botanical artist and I'm working on an illustration of several Tamriel plants. The leaf morphology looks a lot like the dandelion leaves but no other functional similarity. And I can't find an alpine/tundra plant which mimics Nirnroot in appearance and/or function. I would love any thoughts from Skyrim fans! I'm just getting into The Elder Scrolls and Skyrim, and I love how the environment is so vivid and deeply thought out. It reminds me of Tolkien's Middle Earth and Zelda, which I both love.

The more interessting question is: why does it stop vibrate after being picked up?
@ImperialKnowledge
@ImperialKnowledge 5 жыл бұрын
Probably because the plant dies once you remove it from the ground, presuming it gets its energy surplus from volcanic ash in the ground

Ah yes of course eventually. Although they shut up the second one picks them up and continue to shut up when drops. That's just game mechanics then, huh? Someone must mod this. I want my game to crash from 100 dropped roots!

I think your theory on the Giant Nirnoot being an Easter Egg is likely because it can also be found in Oblivion, though harvesting only yields one Nirnroot if my memory serves me correctly. However, trying to find lore explanations to corroborate these Easter Eggs is one of my favorite things about the lore community.

Is is possible that nirnroots are actually products created from the destruction of lorkhan's heart? It would make sense technically because lorkhan himself created nirn, that being said, if nirnroots would be the remnants of his heart which was rooted in lorkhan himself. The sound could be explained by being indistinguishable to living beings. in other words maybe the sounds the nirnroot make are communications from lorkhan, who had achieved godhood himself. and because the living beings of skyrim have not yet understood that they both exist and do not exist, and have a complete understanding of their existence, (some prerequisits for achieving godhood in some instances in TES lore).The glow can be recognized as the aura of a divine being, or symbolic of an omnipotent, omnipresent being. because light cannot be bound, just like a god.Don't know if i'm taking it too far, but they are called NIRNroots

I regard it more as an easter egg, but even if it is part of the lore, it does not have to mean its a multi dimensional travelling plant. Its also possible that the plant just exists in both universes, just like apples exist in both universes, carrots, fish and much more
