What Krist and Kurt are saying could not be more relevant now, with many fans trying to be "soft grunge hipster" or whatever they call it. It has mainly stemmed from Tumblr, which promotes fitting into a very specific aesthetic. It's almost offensive to great bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Babes in Toyland, Beat Happening, Breeders, etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the attempts at being different and out there has now become the mainstream. Never has supposedly breaking out of a mold been so confining. (Edit from 2017, hello): By all means, express yourself. The standards of dissenting thought and opinion are constantly - and have always been - changing. Perhaps this has been difficult to adapt to, and understandably so. If you feel so inclined to take your idols' advice, dissociate from what you see around you and go your own route; create your own thing and do it yourself. Stay groovy people, and to quote Calvin Johnson, "Go with the feeling."

Isn't it funny? the guy behind, the one who looks totally out of it, the one who doesn't speak, the one who looks like he's thinking about what he's going to have for dinner.... he's Dave fucking Grohl...he formed the Foo Fighters, and went on to record many best seellling albums, play Wembley stadium, play and record with Paul McCartney (and many others), and is one of the best known rock stars to this day... The other two, who act like the leaders, would be out of it in a couple of years...granted, one of them is still remembered as a really special guy.
