I always took "I found god" as a bit of satire, as in, he had depression, the Dr. put him on Lithium, and now he is "supposedly" at peace/has found god. But that's just a subjective opinion and I've never researched the song to a very deep extent. It's actually kinda like the song Zoloft by Ween to me.

andy murray No, Kurt meant this one. He described the meaning of the song being about a man going through depression after a breakup, in which he turns to religion to keep himself alive. His comments on religion go as follows: "I've always felt that some people should have religion in their lives ... That's fine. If it's going to save someone, it's okay. And the person in ['Lithium'] needed it". In other words, Lithium, in this case, is God.

I think you might have taken a few of Kurt's lyrics too literally, "i found god." I believe his lyrics tended to be quite cryptic, maybe even occasionally random. I'm no expert, just my vibe. however you got me thinking a lot more about and appreciating a song I've known for close to 30 years now. Nuts. Good job on the video reaction dude.

@@walker7155 Who knows though? He could have been being slightly sarcastic with that interview due to being annoyed at everyone asking what things meant. Kurt was a very bright guy who didn't appreciate a lot of the fuss being made about him. So I think his songs probably had meaning to him, but not sure he wanted to share it, and also sometimes I am sure he just wrote lyrics that sounded neat. John Lennon did the same. Wrote some of the most meaningful lyrics ever created, and also did nonsense songs like I Am The Walrus...

No, Kurt meant this one. He described the meaning of the song being about a man going through depression after a breakup, in which he turns to religion to keep himself alive. His comments on religion go as follows: "I've always felt that some people should have religion in their lives ... That's fine. If it's going to save someone, it's okay. And the person in ['Lithium'] needed it". In other words, Lithium, in this case, is God. Also, artists will always tell you that a song is meaningless in order for people to make their own interpretation instead of borrowing theirs. Freddie Mercury famously did this with Bohemian Rhapsody, calling it a bunch of meaningless gibberish, and yet in a 2004 Greatest Hits compilation cassette released in Iran, the meaning was stated. Freddie always encouraged the listener to give their own interpretation and Kurt was very much inspired by Freddie's music and ideologies, so he likely picked up that trait from him, even mentioning him in his suicide note.

Lithium is a drug that gets prescribed for a number of things, including personality disorders, manic depression, etc. If you've ever known anyone on lithium, then you know the common complaints about it are that it takes away all highs and lows of emotion. It can make you numb or semi-lethargic. Which, in many cases, is better than the energetic chaos of, for example, a bipolar person having a psychotic episode. In any case, i always felt like this song, the groove, the lyrics, and the way he is singing things that are supposed to be emotionally very strong - excited to meet friends, finding God, loving someone, killing someone, not crying about either- it all sounds like sarcasm but it's just the low to no affect caused by the lithium.

I like how you try to go deep in the understanding of the song, the thing is youd have to understand his mindset. He was a very damaged person, and through that alot of beautiful music was made. I'd suggest watching the About a Son documentary. For me, it was life changing learning about this guys life.

The best way to think about it is as a drug expiernce like the tittle lithium is a drug given to psychatric patients. And I think it's him feeling high and calm and then going low and disturbed.

One thing you really need to understand about early-90s rock bands, and Nirvana in particular, is that their lyrics are often sarcastic. “I’m so happy, because today, I found my friends. They’re in my head. I’m so ugly. That’s okay, because so are you. We broke our mirrors.” Kurt Cobain is being sarcastic when he sings these lyrics.

Fun fact: at one concert when Kurt dove into the crowd a fan stole the shoes right off his feet. The next day at rehearsal he was in his socks. Dave and Krist was like dude where are your shoes he said a fan stole them I need a new pair! 🤣

I feel like the question whether this song is literal, figurative, or satiric, has unfortunately eclipsed the whole vibe of the song, I mean Kurt said so much stuff that is contradictory in his life it makes it pretty impossible to tell what was being conveyed in earnest, maybe that's the point, but the song is still great and I suppose that just matters more to me with this artist
