I was gonna watch this episode anyway bc I love PCG, but wasn't enthusiastic to hear praise laid upon how good the album is. We all know it's great (or should.) But to listen to you dissect the the technical aspects of record making was a joy. All I care about is if a record makes me shake my booty or stir my thoughts with sound and lyrics. Lose myself if you will. But watching Hollis' enthusiasm for the nuances of the artifact and taking something away from the episode that I hadn't known before is why I keep up with PCG. Bravo!

Agree with this comment. I don't know what the hell you're talking about Hollis, it's "inside baseball" type of stuff to me, but I enjoyed learning a little bit more about the kinds of things that collectors talk about. One of my local record shops, Mill City Sound, is owned by a retired engineer who seems to know an awful lot about the record mastering and production process. He sometimes posts "explainers" on the shop's social media and I always love reading those posts.

@@burmajones803 Haha, I take that as an unqualified rave! I actually described this episode as "inside baseball" to someone just yesterday. I was hoping that my loyal viewers would follow me a little farther into the tall grass. So glad to know I didn't lose anyone. Lots of guys know WAY more than me about the process itself and various pressings, but I make it a point to know as much as I can about the music I love. Thanks for the feedback!

{Nirvana's 30th anniversary album} rocks it out of the park!! I loved my copy and listen!! it was killer!! Hollis is dead on accurate on his assessment of this masterpiece. What a hellava fine quality album- well made with the jet set tip- on gatefold and 7" 45 is the cherry on top-- 1st class. Luved Hollis's review as it was totally "down to earth". Just got my 30th anniversary Nevermind cued up on my period correct 1990s old school black face Pioneer receiver, old school Technics floor speakers, and my modern new Mobile Fidelity (MoFi) Studio Deck turntable. "turn up...... the radio" ....... this album kicks you in the groin.... punches the windows out of your living room , and shakes the whole house. This is how this album was meant to be listened. Loud!! Kurt would be dang proud of this edition and this is how we listened to it back when it first came out in the 90s on CD. My original og 1st press CD Nevermind doesn't hold a match to this album. These pipe smokin' audiophiles with thier $7000 dollar stereo systems poo-pooing this album while bitchin' and moaning about it, don't know how to enjoy a Nirvana Nevermind 30th edition. turn it up...... this is nostalgia, not a desire to have an aroma of breathing and dimension of a bernie grundman ORG or a MFSL mofi experience. 30th anniversary edition is a 90s experience....

Hey! So glad you're enjoying the pressing! That's all that truly matters. Crank it up and enjoy! It's such a gorgeous package, that feels lovingly hand crafted. And you're so right; the extra 7 inch is totally the cherry on top. Endless Nameless can finally take its place with a vinyl edition. This is a nice step up from the CD, and a sweet throwback to the days of grunge. Thanks for the comment!

Enjoyed the video. When you mentioned you would discuss the controversy surrounding the album, I figured it was gonna be about how the big box stores and online retailers really hosed the independent shops with this record. Well, I should say the manufacturers hosed the shops in favor of the big guys. Mom and Pops got HEAVILY allocated, while the big guys were shipped tons of them. For shop owners, it kinda feels like a turning point/red flag.
@PopCultureGraveyard

Hey Stewart, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I was mostly referring to the production chain itself, and also all the hate this pressing's getting from audiophiles. But you're right, the independent shops got screwed. If Mike from the In Groove can't get dozens of copies of something like this, it's very odd. I also think it's shady we don't even have a firm number on how many total copies were pressed. I completely agree it's a turning point. In my opinion, now that the "vinyl resurgence" is big money, the big boys want a much bigger piece of the action. And record companies are only too happy to give it to them.

Hi Hollis! I realize all the Nirvana I have on vinyl are live shows: "Unplugged", "Live at The Paramount, Seattle 10/31/91", "Live at The Hollywood Underground Club, Seattle 12/28/88". I bought "Nevermind" on cd in 1991 and enjoyed it, but wasn't a huge fan. While living in Munich in '94 I went to see them, solely because I was homesick and sick of hearing Ace of Base played everywhere. Immediately following the show Kurt canceled the rest of the tour dates and 5 weeks later he was gone. I sold the ticket on Ebay 25 years later for a tidy sum to pay for my 50th birthday party. I'll always have the memories from the show. Lately when I listen to his music or watch an interview I ache for his loss, which I never did in '94. I think it's a combination of nostalgia, empathy and frustration with not being able to connect with today's twentysomethings. Thanks for another great video.

Hey Maria! If you could only have live stuff from one band, Nirvana's not a bad choice! Thanks for sharing that wonderful story. So cool we saw them on the same tour. Emotionally, I had the reverse experience than you. I cut out a much longer part of my concert story where I talk about how the band was gone just five months later, and how I couldn't listen to Nirvana's music for about twenty years afterward. I was so sad at the time, and when I heard their songs all I felt was loss at such a waste of talent. It's only in the last five to ten years or so that I'm actively listening to Kurt's music and can really enjoy it again. PS: I love that you used your ticket to fund such a happy occasion!

Great video. Loved your take on the issue. In regards to the Ryan Smith issue: I hate the confusion that comes from seeing someone's initials in the dead wax, assuming they did they also did the mastering, only to later find out they only cut the lacquers. Why they opted to have RKS cut the lacquer I'm not exactly sure, but the reason he didn't do the mastering is likely because of his location - he's at Sterling on the east coast, and we can assume the tapes (if infact they are still around) are in California. Record companies and artists are increasingly concerned with the security of their orinial tapes these days, and aren't as keen to ship them. I wouldn't count the fact that the lacquer was cut from a digital master as a negative. The hi-res digital audio they use in studios is of such high resolution that there's not a person on the planet who could reliability tell the difference. At that point, its simply a matter of the mastering being good or not on merit. You made a valid point about some of the differences between pressings being lost on more modest systems, and the idea of future collectability because of people using this release as a donor for the case and binning the disc is on point.. and something I hadn't really considered. Cheers.
@PopCultureGraveyard
@PopCultureGraveyard 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great point about the security issue when it comes to original tapes--especially in the age of the Internet, where leaks always happen. It's funny, though, that companies are scared to let tapes out of the vaults when the vaults sometimes catch fire. I'm also with you on the digital master. it's honestly a toss up; sometimes it sounds great, and sometimes not so great. I am adamant about wanting analog pressings from albums that were recorded by analog means. Since I mostly collect older albums, it's hardly an issue. If albums were cut to digital, though, I don't really mind at all. Honestly there's so many other things that happen in the recording/mastering/pressing chain that affect the final product sometimes digital gets a bad rap. Thanks for the comment!

I remember exactly when I heard the original album for the first time. Was definitely a game changer. Those scratches though..faaark.

Nirvana's 30th anniversary edition sounds excelent except one thing - noise floor is audible.

I'm not sure you can say that categorically, since noise floor is very system/power source/room/listener dependent. Pretty sure noise floor is one of those things where your mileage may vary.

March 5, 22. My local shop just got a new shipment in and I picked one up yesterday. Not sure if it's a second run or what but there is no website typeface overlay on the DGC logo at the top of the label; that appears to have been corrected. I haven't had a chance to play it yet but after you pointed yours out I checked and did notice two hairline scratches on Drain You and Lounge Act, however, I don't expect them to be an issue. This was a great assessment of the pressing, IMO, and I appreciate the confirmation bias that my mid-level, average system won't reveal any of the so-called "flaws" inherent in it according to the supposed "audiophiles". In researching this prior to purchase I've read/heard that this is closer to the original mix and mastered the way Kurt would have preferred but who can really say? I've never been much of a Nirvana fan and have never owned the album, though there was a copy in the house growing up. I've since developed an appreciation for it and have no doubt it will more than suffice when I want to take a trip back to those formative days! I wasn't planning to when I clicked on your vid but I'm going to subscribe to see what else you have to say.

Glad you didn't have the typeface problem on yours. I really appreciate you subscribing. Hope you enjoy the channel!

@@PopCultureGraveyard Well I keep going back to what I was saying about different types of digital files -some digital files are so good quality that they’re indistinguishable from the analog, nowadays. That wasn’t always the case. If, as I suspect, the multi tracks were mixed to digital and that digital file given to the engineer to master to vinyl AND the Format was one of those high-quality digital types then I personally don’t see a problem however, of course, if it was mixed to ANALOG AND THEN transferred to Digital then it would seem to be an extra and unneeded step that likely wouldn’t improve matters as an aside, let me tell you a story about an experience that I had: A good friend was in several bands in the 1960/70s & one of them that he felt was an obscure one he wanted to listen to again but he had long since made the jump from vinyl to CD & was wholly committed to that format (don’t ask me why but that’s another story!)So he asked me to transfer his only vinyl copy to a CD as best as I was able so he could hear his old band again as he was sure that they were too obscure to have been granted a CD release This I duly did using just a domestic turntable and a standalone CD recorder. Nothing else. No computer was used. I was pretty amazed at how similar and good sounding both the vinyl and CD was and felt that the vinyl had been originally mastered, mixed and recorded very well and my CD copy accurately reflected this. I decide it would be fun to go online and download some artwork from the original album sleeve to “mock-Up“ an official looking CD only to find to my amazement that after all my efforts the album was cheap and easily available in my friend’s preferred CD format officially anyway! I bought one and when comparing it to the vinyl it was easily inferior (no surprises there!) but the amazing thing, for me at least, was that my ‘Fake CD’ sounded much better than the official one! The point I’m making is that, Basically, I think that quality will ALWAYS be quality no matter what the format or source. A poorly executed vinyl will still sound worse than an excellent and thoughtfully produced high bit rate mp3 IMHO

@@PopCultureGraveyard No, I'm honored I got to be shouted out on this awesome episode for Nevermind - a truly seminal album in my musical life! As usual I learned something new from you - I had no idea that there was an early misaddressing of the CD without that track! I'm pretty sure I got this album within a month or two of it coming out but definitely didn't get it 'day of' so mine always had it (and it definitely 'got me' the first time!). A friend in my A/V class who knew I made a video to the Pixies earlier that year said "you know, if you like them, you'll like this new album by Nirvana" - so I went to the local CD store that in those days let you listen to a copy at a headphone stand, skipped through a few tracks, listening to the first few minutes of some, and by the time I got to Krist warbling "Get Together" I was sold! Wound up copying the CD on a Maxell tape to listen to in the car (I had just gotten my driver's license) which only had a tape player, and on the other side was Pixies Trompe Le Monde - that tape didn't leave the player for literally months! A very heady time......

@@langdonboom Love that story! And yeah, if side one of Nevermind didn't hook you, no album could. How did you not have the "longbox" to your Nevermind CD on the wall with all your other ones? Or did you, and I'm blanking? In any case, I really miss having a tape deck in the car. I love remembering how an album would rule the car for weeks on end--sometimes entire summers. I wonder where your A/V class friend is now? These people play their roles, and serve their purposes in our lives, and sometimes turn us on to amazing music! I remember when listening stations started popping up. I thought they were so cool at the time. To this day, I don't take a record store seriously if they don't have a couple of turntables set up for customers to listen to stuff.

At last a band I’ve heard of!😉 So with your comments about seven minutes 39 seconds into this… I would say that if your query/complaint is about a digital format being given to master from then I would say that there are digital files and digital files; there are digital formats and there are digital formats! I’m sure no one is suggesting that the mastering engineer was given an MP3! It is certainly possible that mixing down to a “digital file” is perfectly fine and even a desirable format assuming that it was at high enough quality. I’ve not heard this final album but you have… so you tell me if you can hear a problem with the mix prior to it being mastered causing an audibly inferior result… “The proof of the pudding is in the eating” If, however your complaints are that, with two people available; one to do the mastering and one to do the mixing & you feel that the wrong guy was given the other’s job then that’s a different matter altogether but I would truly wonder why that would be the case -IF, as I say, that is the problem you’re expressing @ around 7:39

Haha, I've been beating the bushes to find a band you've heard of! You're absolutely right about quality digital files and unworthy digital files. That's not my complaint. @@PopCultureGraveyard I see… the Nirvana situation is perhaps a little more complicated than others in that there seems to be different ownership & different control of different songs etc (I daresay others including yourself will know far more about this kind of thing than I do -@least when it comes to this band) but I understand that Courtney Love may well have much more say in what happens than anyone actually present at the recordings? She certainly seems to be opinionated about recording quality and practices and I remember an interview where she was very scathing towards Steve Albini in general and what he did with PJ Harvey‘s recordings in particular(FWIW I don’t agree with her on this myself but I do concede she is better at finding lost aeroplanes than I am so who am I to judge?!) The main point I’m getting at is that there will definitely be Opinionated and interested parties who will have to “sign off” on all this so could there be method to the madness? I’m happy that there is a healthy resurgence/interest in the vinyl format but is it so desperate a market that they need to compromise to get stuff out quickly?! I suppose I’m envisaging a situation where those concerned have thought long and hard about all this and have listened back to the final result and (shameful scratching of the vinyl aside)are happy with these results🤷‍♂️

@@BeesWaxMinder I believe (but could be wrong) that Frances is about to have more say in these things than Courtney does. She inherits all Kurt's royalties once she turns 30, which she does next year. (God, I'm old.) Anyway, the decision making regarding these productions, has little to do with either of them, as a company named Primary Wave Music oversees all the administrative rights to Kurt's music. (Unless they've sold it to someone else.) As far as I understand it, when it comes to vinyl, the main reason people cut from digital is to save money. I haven't heard that process ever having been done for quality reasons--quality very well may be a reason, but I've never heard it mentioned. I'd really like to believe your scenario that those concerned parties actually gave this production so much thought. But I'd honestly be shocked if they even listened back to the final result.

Love your review but IMO this 30th Anniversary album sounds fantastically remastered! It does not seem compressed at all for the younger gen IMO. I have a Bernie Grundman remaster of this album also and IMO this 30th anniversary is as good or slightly better. I think the problem is social media. Many want to think a certain copy they bought previously, years ago, is better so they hype it up, and try to hate on newer releases? IMO this 30th Anniversary Nevermind has the dynamics and audiophile quality as good, or IMO, maybe better than any other release so far.

@@LividImp there are people who think Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds are garbage. I'm not one of those people, but they certainly exist. My point is that the appreciation of music is a subjective and individual experience and can not be quantified in an objective way. After the initial impact of the sound wore off, I bored of it pretty quickly. The virtual deification of Cobain after his suicide by many people hardened my feelings about it. As a long time resident of the Seattle area I am put off by the cultural ideas and norms that Nirvana reflected and perpetuated. I refer to the tendency towards mopey, self absorbed, nihilistic navel gazing and the glamorizing of hard drug use. Every single day I see people on the street following the Cobain cult who measure their lives in drug scores carrying banged up acoustic guitars that they can barely bash out a couple of open chords on. They call it acoustic punk. I call it being a lazy degerate hack. That's the legacy of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana to me. That's my opinion. You are welcome to yours. I do give them some credit for contributing to the decline of so called "hair metal." These kind of debates can be entertaining, but we won't likely change each other's mind.

But that has nothing to do with the music. From about 1994 to 2004 I refused to listen to Nevermind because I had become so sick of it. But one day in 2004 I was bored and gave it another spin and was reminded why I loved it so much in 1991. It really is good. Maybe not the best, but still a masterpiece of good ol' fashion youthful rock n roll. A rare mix of raw and poppy. A mix that most artists never stumble onto because they are too busy trying to be overly serious and artsy, or worse just trying to move units. Give it another shot outside the distraction of its cultural impact.
