Today we check out the sound differences with the AAM Competition Short Tails vs. the Resonated Short Tails!!! Keep in mind that the 2012 Sport 370Z has the factory Y pipe as part of the stock exhaust design, while the Nismo has an H pipe as the stock mid pipe design.
The non resonated tails have more bass to the sound with a lower pitched rumble. While the resonators eliminate that low bass and have a more crisp sound.
I personally like the resonated ones much better because they do not have that low bass drone at 45mpg when cruising. The non resonated tails do have quite a lot of drone at 45-50mph while the resonators cut it by much more than half and make the minimal amount of drone more than tolerable.
Also, the final drive ratio's for the two cars are different. At 45-50mph in the Sport Z, the cruising RPM in 6th was 1,800 rpm. While the Nismo is at 2,000 rpm. 1800rpm is where the annoying drone is.
Under WOT both cars sound pretty epic, and both make the trunk latch rattle a bit :(
I'll work on fixing that soon. It was more with the non resonated, only a little rattle with the resonated.
I'm very happy with the resonated tails on my Nismo and would recommend them over the standard ones if you was as loud as you can go without being obnoxious or having a lot of drone.
Also, Nismo Z's do not need a Cat Back exhaust since the mid pipe it comes with is true dual (Developed by HKS by the way). Standard Z's would benefit from an upgraded mid pipe like the AAM Competition S Line mid pipes.
