Nissan Leaf brake squeal when reversing! Parking brake & rear disc brake service fixes the problem

In this video I work on a 2015 Nissan Leaf where the brakes squeal when reversing. This turned out to be due to the parking brake shoes binding and not releasing properly, causing them to rub against the parking brake drum and make the squeaking noise. When it was particularly bad, the parking brake shoes were catching against the drum when reversing, to the extent that they were applying braking force to the rear wheels and stopping the car from reversing freely.
This was not a problem with the main service brakes. The car would roll freely forwards and backwards in neutral with the parking brake off.
The fix for this problem was to strip, clean, lubricate and adjust the parking brake shoes. I also did a rear brake caliper service at the same time, as the brake calipers have to be removed to get to the parking brake shoes.
This video shows how to service the parking brake and main rear brake on a 1st generation Nissan Leaf.

Hey Andrew, a fellow Andrew and leaf owner here. Got same squeaky reverse handbrake issue and knocking noise from sway bar linkage. Currently having a month of sundays under the leaf doing alsorts. Fitting everspacher and lfbros 2kw ac heater in my 2011 leaf. Thanks for all your vids very helpful. Please keep it up.

When we picked ours up it had 11000miles ...It squeaked when revearsing and we should really have taken it back right away ...It got ridiculous and you were nearly skidding when revearsing .Parks garage were horrible and we ended up getting messed around non stop .Eventually they fixed it .. Total nightmare .This video is bloody good man ...I always take a skiff off the edge of the discs with the grinder .Its a great feeling when you build it all back up.Put the tools away and wash your hands .Great video laddie .

My 2015 leaf also started squealing last year, in Winter, when it was parked up in damp conditions, and when the noise seemed to occur was when reversing, so far this winter its not done it yet, but after 65000 i am going to be replacing all the discs and pads all around, so will do what you have shown here, great informative step by step video, so thanks alot.

Excellent video, thanks Andrew. Very well explained, and you managed to get the camera into all of the right places when filming. I've got an issue with the electronic handbrake not releasing, so will be underneath my Leaf tonight! Might perform a brake service at the same time, but I'm frightened to even look at the shoe!

Yes I had the same problem of binding brakes when reversing. This was remedied by braking hard from time to time. This cleans the discs and completely solved the problem
@AndrewFixes
@AndrewFixes 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. This was a problem with the parking brake rather than the main 'driving' brakes, so braking hard wouldn't do anything to help it. Driving slowly with the parking brake on might do something!

@@AndrewFixes Corrosion(rust) on the discs because of little use due to regenerative braking was the cause of my problem. The foot operated parking brake which moves the shoes inside the hub of the rear discs is not subject to corrosion as the disc is.

Watched this while assembling the parking brake after changing the rear bearing/hub assembly - that was a bit of a job, lots of hammering to separate the hub assembly from parking brake assembly.

Thanks for the video. I broke a stud so had to remove the disk to replace that. By way of postscript, my disk was VERY hard to get off. I had to use a pulley puller and a few good thumps to get it to release. Your video showed that it was just pushed on so just beware - substantially more force than shown in the video might be required to get the disk to release.

Agreed, sounds like you had much more of a fight than I did. There's another video on my channel of me changing the front discs and pads on a VW Tiguan - the discs on that needed plenty of attention from the hammer to get them removed.

I have the exact same problem with a 2014 Leaf with 66,000 miles. The parking brake sticks on every morning, only releasing with a bang as the car starts moving, then there's the hideous squeal and often also a small knock once per wheel revolution as I'm reversing. So it clearly needs the parking brake shoe service but I'm reassured that the parking brake is completely separate from the service brakes so I'm not likely to lose the brakes while driving. I'll have a go at servicing it over the Christmas break.

Thank you so much for making this video. I got my rear tires completely stuck after using the handbrake, only when in reverse. Gonna take it to full brake service, because it's impossible to reverse out of parking in the middle of the winter due to it, since my front wheels then will just spin around at the spot.

I am assuming myb 2011 LEAF rear brake set up will be the same . excellent video and fairly meticulous attention to lubrication. maybe a dab of blue locktite on the caliper bracket bolts .. I have some Metatect rust treatment / preventer smells like Waxoyl .. I brush it all over any exposed steel surfaces after wire brushing the disc location on the hub it was asking for some of your prefered .plasti anti seize. my favorite go to anti seize .is Bostic nuclear grease . a mortgage is needed to buy it .

Hi Jim, glad the video has been helpful with the rear brakes. Sounds like I need to do one for the fronts as well. Actually this is on my list to do, but haven't recorded it yet. The Leafs (Leaves?) I've worked on are like yours, with a single piston caliper on the front, and not like the Leaf in the Autodoc video. About the springs, as I recall there are 2 springs on one end of each of the pads: one gets compressed and goes in the pad groove on the pad carrier, the other presses against the outer surface of the pad carrier and helps pad retraction. I don't know whether you've tried this already, but for the fronts I always find it easier to undo the caliper top and bottom slider bolts, then move it out of the way. After that I take the pad carrier bracket off the car and assemble the pads into the pad carrier on the bench. I usually do inner pad first, then outer. I install both pads from the outside in, top first) and haven't experienced the issue you described about needing the inner pad removed to do the outer. I take it you have the extra springs at the top for both pads?
@AndrewFixes
@AndrewFixes 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, those teeth you mention are part of the brake caliper, so you need to unbolt the caliper from the pad carrier by removing the 2 bolts at the back of the caliper sliders. I think they are 14mm. The sliders are a different design to those on the back, so it isn't necessary to remove the whole slider pin to take the caliper off, and expose it to dirt ingress.

Hi. Thank you for the video, possible additions might be the removal of the lower dash panels to adjust the cable but otherwise great. My 2014 24kw had had the squeak since purchase 32 months ago at 5000 miles now 26400.There was evidence that the n/s had in the cars early life had some attention. I do not have a Nissan dealer within 85miles so all general maintenance is on a use and issue basis and observation of any issues as the show. I had changed the rear pads 18 months previously also parting with the rotted out Michelin tyres about the same time. The pads not worn but showing rust swell on the backings. Throughout CV19 little use, noted higher leccy consumption and nsr hub noise but in particular the car unstable tending to weave, I had ordered a parking brake kit and looked at a bearing assembly just in case. On stripping the rear parking brake the shoes were damaged on the leading edges due to friction material being deeply pitted the new shoes noticeably thicker, the steady pins rusted and the n/s brake cable solid where the design passes the brake plate and into the lever to move the shoes, a lot of stripping cleaning and greasing removed aluminium white fitting corrosion but will need a new cable. Reassembly proved that the hubs locked on wheel rotation backwards this being the new shoes being a very close fit, (Mintex). After a short drive and rechecking friction marks were visible every 15mm along the friction circumference of the shoe which will allow quick bedding in. I used the handbrake in motion to check for fit. The locking disappeared. The action of the footbrake well below safe limits and a lot of pedal movement that hadn't been there before stripping indicating the level of cable seizing which had been corrected, The footbrake adjuster under the lower dash panels was taken up by about 20mm YES!!!, further jacked wheel rotation checks showed all well and road performance fine, as was a temperature check on the discs which was even both sides and front. I would suggest that it may be better to leave the brake drum adjusters loose rather than clicked up to allow the brake cable to move a short distance on every application of the brake, I do not use the electric h/b through choice. The total job not difficult but full of surprises and the need to take off surface rust and treat behind the rear discs ( Shell Ensis fluid) this provides a creeping wax like fluid. Also to clean off corrosion from the disc edges scale etc. I use a Aven rasp bodywork file which doesn't dig the metal but leaves a corrosion free surface if used with care. Thanks again for helpful tips.

Brilliant video thanks. I've just ordered discs and pads for all corners as my discs look like they were attached to the Titanic. The pads are really low too so I'm guessing the calipers are sticking. I can sort those out easily enough. When I put brand new discs on the rear, do I need to reset the handbrake or will it set itself? It's going into Nissan in 2 months for its annual service so they should do that anyway (I hope).
@AndrewFixes
@AndrewFixes 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Duncan. It would be best to redo the handbrake / parking brake adjustment when the rear discs are changed. In theory there should be very little wear on the handbrake drums on the rear discs, so very little adjustment should be needed. Having said that, there will likely have been some wear, and there could be a slight difference in diameter between the new and old drums, so best practice would be to redo the adjustment. It won't adjust itself.

great video Do you know the purpose of these metal backing plates on the pads? I have only seen the type with the soft anti noise protection. mine were so rusty and ugly i threw them away and used only the pads plus some anti noise paste. Hoping that wont give me any issues haha might have to pick up a new set
