Such a great video...I'm 71 years old... and this went from a potential nightmare to a piece of cake repair thanks to you. I'm hoping that this was the cause of my leak. It appeared to be leaking from around the oil cooler for some time because there was a lot of dirt stuck on the oil cooler.Harbor Freight had a Presidents Day sale on torque wrenches and I picked one up for $9.99 plus the $3.79 for the gasket. Thanks

This is one of the best How To videos I've come across and thanks to dial2fast, I was able to successfully replace the oil cooler O-ring on my 2007 G35X (Nissan's VQ 6-cyl engine). The difficulty factor is a 1 out of 5 and is about a 10 minute job for those 20 and under (and about 2 hours for those 60 and older :). As dial2fast has indicated, draining the oil is not necessary unless you plan to change your oil anyway. Note, you will lose about 1/2 quart of oil if not draining the oil. For those with a G35, here are a few notes that may help: Tools/materials for the job: oil pan, flashlight, phone camera, rubber gloves, paper towels, trash can, 10mm socket w/ short extension, 22mm deep socket, large breaker bar (for nut removal), pick or small screw driver to remove old O-Ring, Oil Filter wrench, new O-Ring (avail on Amazon or Nissan dealer), Carb Cleaner spray, Super Lube Silicone Lubricating Compound. On any car, be sure to take the necessary precaution when jacking. If using a hydraulic jack, be sure to also use sold jack stands. 1. Remove the plastic shroud to gain clear access to oil filter housing. There are fourteen 10mm bolts (using a cordless impact driver will make quick work of this). 2. Remove the oil filter and using a breaker bar and the 22mm socket, loosen and remove the oil filter housing center nut/nipple. Note, the shoulders of the nut are shallow so be sure to hold the socket tight up against the nut to prevent stripping the nut shoulders. And, as stated many times over, there is no need to remove the cooler hoses. 3. Pull the oil filter housing away from the cooler and allow the oil to drain for about 5-10 minutes (about 1/2 quart will drain). 4. Remove the old O-ring (yes, it looks fine - looks are deceiving). Using the flash, take a picture of both sides of the housing. You will notice grime. This needs to be removed carefully without allowing the grime to enter the housing. Use a rag to cover the internal as well as possible and use a paper towel to remove most of the grime from both sides. Then spray Carb Cleaner or Brake Cleaner on both halves of the housing to achieve a clean surface, especially where the O-ring seats. Then take another picture to validate that no grime particles are remaining that could inhibit the O-ring seal (I find the camera does a better job than attempting to do a live visual since the camera can reach up into the cavity). 5. Using the Super Lube Silicone grease (or use clean motor oil if grease is unavailable), lubricate the O-ring and seat it as shown in the video. 6. Carefully re-align and mate the two halves and re-insert the center threaded nipple using the 22mm socket. Note again, this is torqued to 36 foot lbs (about 1/2 the torque normally used on most wheel lug nuts). 7. Wipe any excess oil on the undercarriage, reinstall the shroud, and top off the oil. Thanks to this great video, your oil leak should be solved.

I had difficulty getting the new O ring in the groove as I was doing it by feel , matched it with the old one and thought this isn't the same , Then I checked your video and you specifically mention the replacement is bigger . Well done that reassured me , I inserted a large screwdriver in the hole and twisted the housing so I could actually see what I was doing and VOIL.

2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 V6.The O-Ring part # 72493 did not fit my oil cooler (which calls for this vehicle). It was to big in diameter. After doing some research at the auto parts store and some comparing with the old one, Oil Cooler O-ring part # 917-036 (came with a set of 3) matched up identical to the old 1 and fits. For those looking and searching, I hope this helps.

I just wanted to follow up. I went from having the Exxon Valdez oil spill in my driveway to a mere drip or so. So I'd say 99% of my oil was leaking from this seal. Thank you so much for posting this. I thought there was something catastrophic going on with her car, so not only was this an easy fix, but cheap as well. I'm at around 176,000 miles, so if I can get another year or two out of her, I'll be good to go!

Thanks for the pictures of where the new gasket was supposed to go as it wasn't obvious since mine was also stuck to the back surface. I wish I had de-greased and hosed the whole area down before I replaced the gasket as the leaking oil had attracted much road grit which was hard to keep away from the inner oil cooler surfaces.. I had the best luck getting the new gasket in by placing the new gasket at the bottom of the cooler groove and working a finger from each hand along the sides until meeting at the top and popping in the remaining gasket portion. Another observation - the retaining bolt didn't feel to be especially tight when I removed it, and the old gasket didn't seem damaged/deteriorated in any way. I wonder, if I had just re-torqued the bolt to 36 ft-lbs without replacing the gasket, might the oil leak have also gone away?

Awesome video, thank you for sharing this. I'll probably be changing out this o-ring this weekend since my wife's car has been leaking for some time and I was thinking it was something far worse. Could still be but for a ten dollar o-ring, this is worth trying for sure. One clarification: You didn't have to drain the oil before this procedure? You just lost a little when removing the filter and cooler? Thanks again.

I have a 05 G35 with 115k and there seems to be a small leak and noticed that there's oil on the filter area that leaks down to the drain bolt. At first I thought it was the drain bolt so could it by the o-ring? I've also noticed that my coolant has been getting low on the reservoir. I spotted some residue on the passenger side.

Hi mate my Nissan nv400 2015 van has started leaking oil and after diagnostics Mechanich recons it’s an oil cooler and it needs to be replaced do you think changing that ring will save me spending £300 ? Thanks in advance

I have an oil leak on my 1999 Nissan Frontier Truck XE 4X4, I just can't seem to locate. I took it in to the Nissan Dealership and they claimed it was a leak from the oil sending unit. This was replaced and it still leaks. I've had several friends claim it most likely is from the rear main seal. This truck has 145,000 miles and is street driven only. Any ideas or oil leak problems known from this model truck? Also, it has a 3.3 liter 6-cylender engine and automatic Transmission. Thank you.

+A A.N The burn oil you smell might be your rear valve cover leaking oil and dripping onto the exhaust manifold which the fumes will get sucked into the window vents. This happened to mine at over 100k miles. Had to replace the valve cover and seal. I did a series of videos showing how to change it. It's a big job.
