Here's a look at the mechanicals of the Nissan Qashqai (also known as the Rouge Sport in the USA).
Skip to topic in the video:
0:00 Introduction
0:15 Engine
6:12: Electronics
6:55 Transmission
9:04 Exhaust
9:52 Suspension
12:54 Cooling
15:30 Brakes
16:31 Steering
16:45 Fuel
17:04 Final Thoughts
The 2019 Nissan Qashqai comes with a 2.0L direct injected 4 cylinder engine and a CVT transmission. The model shown here is the AWD model. In this video, we take a look at the air intake, fuel delivery, engine layout, valve train, drivetrain, transmission, driveline, suspension, frame, brakes, steering and cooling systems on the Nissan Qashqai. We also take a look at how easy it would be to maintain this vehicle if you were to purchase one down the road.
Overall the Qashqai is an average entry into the small cross-over segment. From a mechanical perspective, the engine and transmission accessibility could be improved, as well as the aging underlying architecture underneath the body.

7:02 Dipstick sold separately! Strike 3. Strike 1: air filter is buried in "secret" location (not a big deal, but still...) Strike 2: changing the alternator requires more of the car to be disassembled than changing the AC pump. 3 strikes that put another car in our junk yards as fast possible.

Based on that under hood layout it looks like Renault had a little too much influence in the design of this platform and power train.

Yep. The way the ECU is bolted to the battery tray, the air filter location, the way the brake master cylinder is buried behind the air filter (albeit Nissan have extended the brake fluid reservoir cap upwards which is a bit more sensible), the single piece undertray... It's all pure Renault! :) The expansion tank cap seems to be identical to Renault, and the crossflow radiator seems typical Renault too.

What I love about these videos is they are going to have a whole 2nd life once these vehicles are 10-20 yrs old** and people who like wrenching on cars themselves can check here to see if that's a used vehicle they want to deal with. **j/k there will be no 20 yr old Nissan CVT vehicles.

Thank you so much for your mechanical reviews! You point out not only the strong and weak points of a car, but also how hard/easy it is to replace components when they wear down. Some people may say "ilL jUsT hAvE mY meChaNic dO iT" but little do they realize it will take much more time to repair something if a component is hard to work on, thus a much more expensive bill at the end of the day. Cheers from the West Coast of Canada, Sir!

Love these mechanical overviews! Definitely some sketchy engineering and materials choices here, especially whatever pot metal they apparently make the exhaust out of. I have the 2017 US version. It'll be 7yrs old. No major issues. Only 50k miles. Although I'm not too worried about changing s-plugs only because they'll only be changed a few times during the life of it, I have noticed the rust issue underneath with the suspension. Has a good amount of rot in some spots :( I think Mitsubishis also have this issue. Other than that, the car's been great for me. The cvt felt jolty within the first 20k, but it feels more smoothed out as it's aged. I hope it keeps up.

I have one of these cars, and its not too bad. Car is relatively reliable. Change the cvt fluid every 30k miles or less and you should be fine. You should be able to fill it through the dipstick tube and I've heard they have a plug on the side of the trans where you can fill it like a differential.

Did they fix the Tailgate/boot lid handle issue? Had a Dualis so maybe four or so years difference from this model. The tailgate handle is secured by clips. These break after a bit of force and are hard to replace. Solution is to never actually use the handle and let the boot open by itself. Nissan never backed down from claiming it wasn't a design fault in Australia. Some other territories got cheap replacements eg less than $250 USD.

I live in the northeastern U.S., so corrosion is a major concern of mine with regard to vehicles. Interestingly, there is so much on the Interwebs about how auto manufacturers use blah, blah, blah processes and zinc coatings that are, "so much better than autos of the past, woo, woo." Yet, this Nissan is a year or two old and is starting to rust. I have watched similar videos about 1 or 2 year old Jeep Wrangler frames starting to rust. I see A LOT of late model Ford, GM, and Chrysler trucks with spots. At $20, $30, $40, $50,000+ that is criminal! That being typed, I have a 2007 Nissan Altima with CVT transmission that has 165,000 trouble-free miles on it. Zero rust on the body (don't know what the undercarriage looks like), and the engine hums like an old German sewing machine. Also, have a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder, which is THE best of the 6 vehicles I've owned in my life. Not an engineer, however, it's starting to look to me like the overwhelming majority of vehicles made since about 2015 (with the exception of most Toyotas and Hondas) are sub-par (especially relative to their price points). I do NOT give a damn about the diameter of the cupholders, the size of the "infotainment" screen, heated steering wheels, or the number of USB ports. I am only interested in trucks that are built rock solid, can be worked on easily, use metal engine components (where it's smart...............like high heat areas), and have well proven engine and transmission designs and a minimum of computers. This philosophy (and diligent preventative maintenance) have served me very well. Zero engine or transmission issues in 30+ years of driving.

I had this vehicle for two years with 41,000 km and its was the worst vehicle i have ever had... was in the shop for warranty work way more times then i can count on two hands and at 17,000 km both front struts needed replacement under warranty and to cut right to the chase washout a entire laundry list of all the warranty work i had.. the CVT was on its way out on year almost 3 of having it as my last straw. I have since traded it in as it was turning into a nightmare as it was right from the start even at 8,000 km I was having a long crank over issue with a stalling issue. Never EVER ANOTHER NISSAN!

Absolutely hate the air intake design with it blocking everything below and how long of a path it is. How do you jump the car? Electronics under the hood aren’t a big deal. Most electronics are potted or conformal coated so they could be underwater if you want. Also the electronics are in a cast aluminum case so you will likely be dead if the module gets crushed.
