Learn doggy paddle swimming technique by watching this step-by-step video. In this video, Johnny Rocket breaks down the steps to master this fun and unique swimming style. Whether you're looking for a playful way to enjoy the water or want to swim with your head above water, Johnny's expert guidance has got you covered.
Key Highlights:
1: Learn the gentle flutter kick for the perfect doggy paddle.
2: Discover the right arm movements and balance tips.
3: Get insights into maintaining stability and reducing resistance.
4: Find out how to keep your head above water effortlessly.
To perform the Doggy Paddle effectively:
Keep the legs underwater at a downward angle to maintain balance and reduce splashing.
Use a gentle flutter kick for the legs.
Employ a scooping motion with the arms, similar to how children often paddle in the water.
Alternatively, use an extended freestyle pull with a slight lateral movement for balance.
Angle the hand like a pizza slicer to minimize resistance during hand movement.

I am the person who has commented on several of your great teaching videos who is currently in a beginning swimming class of 7 but I am the only true Non Swimmer. Since my instructor does not take much time with me and seems to focus on the swimmers your teaching videos have been so valuable. I watched this video over and over before I went to class last week and bingo. I started doing this!!! When my instructor happened to come over to me she said "oh I see you are practicing treading water"... but low and behold I was practicing how to doggy paddle. I did ask my instructor when I started the class if I could start with a doggy paddle and she said "I don't teach this because it is not a stroke". Thanks for this video as I knew doggy paddle is a technique that is good for new beginner swimmers, and your video confirmed this thought to me.

How I wish I could do this! Learned freestyle swimming years ago & now that’s the only way I know how to swim, with my head IN the water. I swim daily & see people glide across the pool like swans & every time I try it my head is bobbing in & out the water. I’ll try your technique, I think I’ve been focussing on keeping my hips above the water instead of letting them drop. Thx for the video, will try doing this soon!

You're welcome! Swimming techniques can be challenging to master, but with practice and the right adjustments, you can improve your form and efficiency. Focusing on keeping your hips up and maintaining a streamlined position should help. Remember, it's all about finding a comfortable and efficient balance in the water. Keep practicing, and you'll see improvements over time. If you have any more questions or need further guidance, feel free to ask. Happy swimming!

Actually, swimming streamline is hindering me. In your video your hips are lowered so keeping them up is not effective, not for me anyway. I tried all last week, even had a master swimmer in the lane next to me & she couldn’t help me. 🤦‍♀️ I’ll keep trying b’cuz it’s probably an easy fix. You guys will be the 1st to know when I do get it.😃

I GOT IT!!! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 You know what helped me? I did a normal kick but not as fast, arched my back more which lowered my hips & pulled the water towards me as you did in the video. Now, my entire upper body is still submerged but my head is now above water. It's actually more of a "reach-pull" b'cuz as I reached fwd as far as I could w/ my left arm, I'm pulling w/ the right arm & kept that motion going. Thx A MILLION guys! You have no idea how long I've tried to swim "on top" of the water. I still haven't perfected it but at least I can "breathe" as I practice.😊

Doggy paddle is excellent for strengthening the back of the arms, triceps brachii, if you pull hard and long enough.
@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming 8 ай бұрын
It's also a stroke that some people naturally resort to when they are less comfortable with other swimming techniques. So, while it may not be the most efficient swimming stroke, it can still have its benefits, including as a way to build strength and confidence in the water. Thanks for pointing that out!

I sent this video to a swim instructor that I know. I would always ask her why she doesn't teach the doggy paddle. She said because it isn't a stroke. My argument is "Are you trying to create an olympian or teach someone how to save their life?" I never had swim lessons. My mother taught me the doggy paddle and I just learned the rest on my own and in my own time. Love your videos.@@RocketSwimming

I took lessons to learn Doggy paddle or head above water breaststroke. I started with learning freestyle, then breaststroke which i managed to learn after a little while but my ultimate goal to learn this survival stroke seems much harder than “proper strokes”. I am so disappointed 😢 I often hear whereas children naturally figure out how to do this, lots of adult learner find this much much harder to learn.

Actually when I learned it, it was just a pull. Nothing fancy. My mother had me hold onto a wall and kick for what seemed forever (5 minutes) with elbows locked. Then she told me to turn around and put my arms out in front and kick toward her and when I felt the need, PULL. Worked like a charm. I learned to swim in 5 minutes.@@doxa78

does frog kick require leg bending angle greater than 80° or it can be done with less bending knees
@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming 28 күн бұрын
Greater than 80 degrees is ideal. This bending motion helps generate propulsion by pushing water behind you. But go slow and gradually increase the bending angle as you become more flexible.

The doggy paddle can be tricky at first, but here are a few tips. Relax Your Body, Kick Consistently, Scoop the water with your hands, like you're digging a hole in the sand, Spend some time practicing floating on your front and back to get more comfortable with your buoyancy. Keep practicing and don't get discouraged!

Do you I need air in my lungs to stay on the surface or no? I have struggled to stay above the surface swimming both heads up breastroke and dog paddle? Thanks
@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming 8 ай бұрын
Yes, having air in your lungs can help you stay afloat and on the surface when swimming. When your lungs are filled with air, your body becomes less dense, and this buoyancy can help you stay above water. In strokes like heads-up breaststroke or doggy paddle, where your head is above water, maintaining some air in your lungs can provide extra support.
@princesshabesha332
@princesshabesha332 8 ай бұрын
thank you so much! My instructor told me air in lungs is not needed and I just need to position myself above the water by stretching the body and that makes me afloat so I was confused. @@RocketSwimming

Heyyy, I always sink while trying to dog paddle, my core gets tight and I can't keep my face up. Can you help me with any practice drills for this?
@RocketSwimming

I suggest to keep your core relaxed while keeping your legs underwater. Don't try to kick too fast or hard. Just relax and do flutter kicks. Imaging you are treading water but you lean forward.

How about breathing? It’s hard to keep my lungs a quarter full at all times. Isn’t it then like shallow breathing? I find head above water breaststork impossible for this reason and while doggy paddle swimming might be easier or just as difficult, I am not sure. I learned how to swim free style thanks to your video and a group lesson at my local swimming pool at age 44 but head up breaststoke seems impossible and this doggy style is probably just as hard I reckon. 😢

Focus on controlled exhalation, coordinate your breaths with your strokes, practice, stay relaxed, and consider using floatation devices to help. It takes practice, so don't be discouraged!
