LIVE COVERAGE: NJ v. Michael Barisone Trial - Former Olympian and Dressage Coach Attempted Murder - Olympic Horse Trainer Shooting Trial
Happening In Court:
Cont'd Cross/Redirect Of Dr Charles Hassonm, Psychologist
Rebuttal Witnesses:
Direct Exam of Dr. Louis Schlesinger - Forensic Psychologist
Reminder: The Judge in the Barisone trial has issued an order that we are to shut off comments in our chat rooms for the duration of the trial. At L&C we abide by Judge's orders so we can keep cameras in court/live broadcast.
A coach and former Olympic competitor in the equestrian sport of dressage is standing trial for shooting his student and firing at her fiancé on August 7, 2019. Michael Barisone, 57, has maintained self-defense.
Barisone faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Authorities said he shot student-tenant Lauren Kanarek in the chest twice, and opened fire at her fiancé Rob Goodwin, but he missed. Barison had been trying to evict Kanarek from his farm in Long Valley, New Jersey, claiming that the couple threatened him. He even sued police, claiming they failed to investigate when he called 911 three times and that they lied in their reports.
To be sure, the dislike between him and his student was mutual. In fact, Kanarek voiced concerns for her safety.
“I’m being bullied by a 6’3” man,” she wrote on Facebook before the shooting in a now unavailable post, according to The New York Times. “Bullied to the point I’m afraid. It’s very complicated- I’m not sure of what I can say here- but it seems as if Safe Sport was created for exactly this reason.”
The SafeSport organization fields allegations of abuse in U.S. Olympic and Paralympic sports.
A judge dismissed Barisone’s lawsuit.
“Courts have held that a plaintiff does not have a constitutional right to have police investigate on their behalf, let alone do so to their satisfaction,” Superior Court Judge Louis Sceusi said, according to the Morris County outlet The Daily Record in November.

The cool thing is the state's doctor made a case for self-defense by saying he wasn't delusional and was very afraid, and the defense doctors made a case for insanity. Well played Bilinkas.

This judge should be removed from the bench! He is not staying neutral (which is part of his role hear.) He is not only rude to attorneys but also out of line rude to MANY witnesses. Sad to see this type of person is allowed to keep his position.

If I was Attorney Bilinkas I would make a formal complaint about the way he was treated by this judge. And the prosecutor was enjoying every minute of it. Bilinkas wasnt even able to get his questions out fully before the judge jumps down his throat. The judge literally bullied him...sad to think that we have judges like this one sitting on the bench!

I do not believe this doctor at all. . 2 surgeons can know same techniques to do same operations but both may use different techniques. It does not make one wrong or right. This guy is insulting past witness saying he is better. Omg never done in medical field

the prosecutor informed the defense's doctor that he left parts of the tests that show he's not delusional out of the reports, he didn't include in the reports that he was malingering/ faking - because he scored a score of 35 on the first test and 42 on second and third test and a score of 45 or below shows malingering, that one test he used to diagnosis him was based only on self description, pointed out that he made false statements about what's in the DSM and used that to base Michaels diagnosis. and the doctor gave some bogus reason each time- the test doesn't matter anyway because it doesn't diagnosis delusions, he didn't include the score from the first test because you're not supposed to include the first score, that he left stuff out because he was summarizing, that he uses a higher power to diagnose instead of what's in the DSM and what the test says to do. In this video the prosecutor asked the doctor if he's aware of both the facts that in order to be a delusion the person has to believe it for a month before and that Michael had called 911 five times less than a month before and each time the operating asked him if there were any guns involved and he said no. And the doctor said yes he was aware of both facts. Yet he still diagnosed him as having a delusion that day. I don't know where the defense's doctors came from. the prosecutor was just spoon feeding them the entire time without actually saying it that they made mistake after mistake

I'm not sure how I survived the nauseatingly long recital of all of this prosecution psychologist cv. All his answers droned on, and he had obviously taken everything the person that was shot said as fact. That's not what you do, you examine, you investigate. Never spoke to Piccardo, the 20 year on and off therapist of Barisone. The cute part where he tried to impune Dr Hasson, that did not win him any favors. Suffice to say, this verbose shrink should keep it 90% shorter and much more respectful.

I don't know why jurors can't be supplied with a ciopy of an expert witness' CV/resume, rather than sitting through a recital of their qualifications and publications. In the Curtis Reeves trial one expert witness took 40+ minutes to go through his experience, although a fair bit of it was namedropping.

Yeahh; They must've had him on a supermax or isolation tier because the case considered high-profile; 23&1, no razors or access to the barber box.. CO's could easily have had an inmate shape him up /just as the prosecutors office could've sent word preventing it. Either case, he definitely wasn't in gen pop unkempt like that (mbe a medical pod even /forsure he is now, & not in Morris either
