After his first lost to Okada at Wrestle Kingdom, Naito was full of bitterness and anger. He was mad at the fans who had rejected him, the company who had betrayed him, and himself for being weak enough to allow his fall from grace to happen. That bitterness leaked out and led to him lashing out and trashing both the IWGP and Intercontinental championships as if by destroying the belts he could forget about his past failures. His second match with Okada was a work of art. It felt like it wasn't even about winning the title or beating Okada, but about him being in the main event at all and having the crowd support him in contrast to his first attempt. Seeing the mask of "The Ungovernable" crumble over the course of the match as his techniques and mannerisms reverted to those of the Stardust Genius, and to see him come up short again was heartbreaking, but necessary to get to where we are now. Because its different now. That hatred and bitterness is gone. He may still drag the IC championship, the symbol of his past failures, but he doesn't openly abuse it as he once did. Both the IC and IWGP championships have a different meaning to him now. They're tied to both his destiny and identity, as is the main event of Wrestlekingdom, along with his opponent, Kazuchika Okada. Its no longer about just being in the main event, or getting back at the people who said he wasn't good enough. Its about creating a legend. Transforming the repeated tragedies of his career into something incredible. I started watching NJPW seven years ago, during the G1 Climax which was won by Naito Tetsuya. Back then, I didn't believe in Naito, and most of the people I talked to didn't either. I thought Kota Ibushi was more exciting, and was mad that he wasn't given that opportunity instead, which led to him losing his main event spot. Perhaps Naito may have never become the competitor that he is today if that negative experience had not occurred, however, today, after seeing what he has achieved in the time since then, I believe that I was always wrong about him. That he always had it in him to be at the top of NJPW. But even at that, I don't feel like its enough for me to just say that. Whether its the point of the match tonight or not, I want to see Naito show that I, along with everyone else, was wrong about him. I want him to stand in the ring, surrounded by his stable mates, the people who have supported him, and glow as a shining example to the world that it doesn't matter if the entire world has given up on you. That as long as you continue to believe in yourself, there's always a way to achieve your dreams. Give him hell, Naito.
