Part One of a two-part video comparing the New King James Version (NKJV) and the English Standard Version (ESV).
This video provides background information on both translations. It then discusses the readability of each, concluding that the ESV is easier to read. Finally, it presents evidence that the NKJV is more literal, at least in the New Testament.
Part 2 ( • NKJV vs ESV, Part 2 ) will contrast the source texts the translators relied upon, then present a few examples of where the ESV and NKJV interpret passages differently. It will also provide a brief survey of facts one should consider before choosing one of these translations. At the end, I will illustrate a
graphical method a person could use to help decide between two translations.

Finally, a great video on this topic with these exact two translations. I’m constantly back and forth between ESV and NKjV. I love them both. I wish I could just choose one! ESV definitely has a leg up in the New Testament, but psalms and proverbs in the NKjV are pretty much perfect in every way..

I just recently came to the ESV from the NKJV. This video is really eye opening to how much clearer the ESV is in my opinion. So much smoother to read.

Very good review! I personally think the NKJV does not get the recognition (or popularity) that it deserves. Not only is it more literal than the ESV, it is more beautifully written and poetic. Personally if I could only have one translation, it would probably be the NKJV. While not my go to translation, I would love to see you do a review on the CSB. I think it might pull off exceptionally high readability while retaining as much literalness as possible better than any other translation, and is underrated. People just don’t seem to consider it very much.

Thank you for this video! I am seriously torn between NKJV and ESV for a long time, but this video helped me to finally make my choice. I had binge-watched some of your comparisons with NRSV v. ESV and NASB95 vs. ESV prior to this one. This video seals the deal for me to choose the ESV as my main translation. While I've used the NKJV last year as I went through the Old Testament for my daily devotions, I would agree that NKJV is a little bit stretch to read. The choice for ESV likewise mirrors my exposure to the English language, mainly in the business language register. Much appreciated, brother. I guess NASB95 vs. NASB2020 is already on the works.

@@RGrantJones That would be great! As a former Catholic, I would definitely love the comparison. I guess between NABRE and ESV-CE, it's important to cite differences between the Masoretic Text and the Vulgate, if there would be any.

I really enjoyed this comparison. You have done a wonderful job, as always. I have never read the NKJV; I have only heard it read aloud when someone brings it to Bible study. Even with my limited knowledge, and based on your examples, I do agree that the ESV is the easier of the two translations to understand. It is the easiest Bible in my collection to comprehend. I am not sure how the sites listed came up with their reading level charts. I am looking forward to "Part II."

Thank you, Rachel! I wonder whether the Bible publishers had an influence on some of the scores in order to encourage sales with their target markets. For instance, it would be to Thomas Nelson's advantage to score the NKJV lower if their market consists of laborers, farmers, etc., with a high school education. Similarly, if the ESV sells primarily among those with a college education, it's advantageous to Crossway to have the ESV scored at a higher level.

Thanks for posting this comparison Grant. I often cross refer both texts for clarification while reading, as I personally think that both texts compliment each other and belong on the same bookshelf together; along with a copy of the NIV (84) (my preference) or CSB (if others prefer) - just to iron out any contemporary language issues. While I have failed to mention the KJV and NASB -(and any other contemporary scholarly versions) I am not excluding them from the bookshelf, but rather feel that the NKJV, ESV and NIV are an excellent contemporary trio to work with.

Great video as always. The section on readability and vocabulary really highlights my biggest complaint about the ESV: It removed so much of the rich vocabulary and phraseology of its predecessors. It's the reason I still prefer the RSVCE. I'm looking forward to part 2!

Thanks, Aaron! I agree with your comment about the ESV's vocabulary and forms of expression. I suspect the publisher hired a team of style police to bleach the ESV's prose. Most unfortunate.

I agree with you, Aaron. I find the ESV's bland and simplistic style annoying to read. It also frequentpy employs a phrase that is on the top of my pet peeves list: "steadfast love." It is overused, in my opinion. It may be accurate, but it drives me crazy. I much prefer "mercy," even if it isn't exactly right.

I do think that the NKJV does provide a better footnote system that provides alternative readings and seems more complete as a translation. But I began reading the NKJV when I was able to buy my own bible 1984(?) , so riding a new horse is always a challenge.

Thank You Grant for a fine comparison. I received my first NKJV from the Rev Dr R K Harrison who worked on the translation & presently use Schuyler, Cambridge & Thomas Nelson editions. I also have a number of ESVs with my favourite being a 75th Anniversary Omega bound by Jongbloed. I also enjoyed your info on the Restoration movement, something l’m not familiar with & will have to check out. Blessings for the NY John

Thanks for the kind comment! My knowledge about Restoration Movement preachers' translation usage is limited, to be sure. Those I encounter via the internet typically use the KJV. But I have found one Church of Christ -- located in Paducah, KY -- that posts videos which feature a variety of translations, to include the 1984 NIV, the ASV, and the ESV.

Do you have any plans to review the MEV? I watched this NKJV vs ESV and I compared the MEV to the other two translation and found I liked it better a majority of the time! It is based off the TR like the NKJV but also follows the ESV in many of the non textual translation choices. And in many cases, I liked the MEV over both of the other two!

I agree the NKJV has an occasional word that could be smoothed or could use a quick footnote to clarify, but for goodness sake, the benefit of having all the italicized words in the NKJV that show what is or is not in the Greek/Hebrew far outweighs any benefit to the the other translations- translations that quote the NKJV's literal translation in the footnotes. Also, I like that the NKJV capitalizes God and reiterates the deity of Christ. See Revelation 1:11 ("I am the Alpha and Omega, First and the Last" is kept in the NKJV) and Colossians 1:14 ("redemption through His blood" is kept in the NKJV).

I agree. I also found that NKJV NT is more literal than that of ESV at some point. But as you mentioned, the sources used for ESV are more advanced. I would take both.

For every verse reviewed, I compared with the Knox Version. I must say, I preferred Knox 9 times out of 10 for both clarity and accuracy.

There’s a lot to commend Rev Knox’s fine translation of the Latin Vulgate. He himself also has an interesting story to tell as he migrated from the Church of England to Roman Catholicism. - Rev John Wilderspin

My first Bible reading was done on a KJV, with the ESV Study Bible as companion and reference translation. While I just started my 2nd Bible reading on a RSV Catholic Edition. I find these 3 translations complement each other nicely, and I can also see the evolution from KJV to RSV to ESV. If I have to live with only one, I think I'd settle with the RSV; though the ESV did not go full political correctness/cultural awareness with gender-neutral pronouns in the text itself like in the NRSV or NIV, they occur all too often in the footnotes it is annoying. And I like the fact that the RSV stuck with the archaic thees, thous etc when addressing God esp. in the Psalms. The lack of quotation marks in the KJV presents some difficulty sometimes.

As always an excellent review, thank you for your work. I certainly agree the ESV is easier to read, though it can have some obscure vocabulary ('adjure' for example)! I own both a Nelson NKJV study bible and a Holman personal size NKJV and neither have the footnotes with synonyms for certain words. Where are you getting yours? I noticed they are present in bible gateway. Thanks ☺️

@@timcrouch4801 - I've noticed some NKJVs don't include all of the translation notes (e.g., the note at Col 2.8 that explains that the word translated 'cheat' is literally 'plunder' or 'take captive'). It's possible that the editions that are light on translation notes also omit the synonyms.

@@RGrantJones I wish publishers would make it more clear which editions omitted the notes. Sometimes they will tell you if it does have the full set of notes, but will leave you guessing with other editions that you might rather use.

I went from the KJV/NKJV to the ESV which lasted 5 years. Since 1 year ago I am back to using the KJV/NKJV and I love it. The ESV is nice but I think it's somewhat overrated. I find the KJV and NKJV much more beautiful, poetic and has theologically richer words. The NKJV is the best of the KJV put into modern english. I don't see a need for the ESV.

A Bible that is well read, and speaks best to a person is the version to use. I use at least 2 or 3 versions in Bible study. I keep leaning towards the KJV (Authorized KJV actually) more these days, but I am weird; love the old version of English. I bought a 1611 version as a gift for a friend and went through it, but after reading it awhile started speaking to people in Olde English, so I'd better watch that. lol I like the ESV at times but there are missing verses and sentences. I prefer the Textus Receptus, which comes from the Orthodox Church. The modern versions use the Latin Vulgate from the Roman Catholic Church. I'm not a KJV "onlyist" because the "missing" verses are included elsewhere, and does not change doctrines, but I feel they do clarify the story being told, just my personal preference. The NET Bible seems to have most of the verses the KJV and NKJV have, so it's more useful to me. Another great evaluation, Mr. Jones! I appreciate your insights and valuable opinions.

Thank you brother, I tend to prefer the NKJV and likely my familiarity with it and the KJV is why I do not find it more difficult to read than the ESV. Rather I find the ESV's stilted language (it tries too hard to be literary) makes it more difficult to read for me.

When I set the two translations side-by-side and put myself in the place of someone coming to the text afresh, the ESV seems easier to read. But plainly some of the people who score reading levels disagree with my opinion.

@@RGrantJones it is difficult for me to approach this subject without bias due to my familiarity with the KJV and NKJV. The NKJV does have a lot of archaic words like terebinth tree but I find more in the ESV (lyre instead of harp as in NKJV etc).

Even if the NKJV is not "harder" to read than the ESV, it is certainly less pleasant to read. The italics and capitalized pronouns create a significant amount of visual noise during a reading session. I'd have less of a gripe with the marking of supplied words if the NKJV would do two things: use a slightly different font (e.g. a sans serif font in a text that is otherwise serifed) rather than an italicized font and reserve the markers for instances where the supplied words are not necessarily implied by the text.

@@RGrantJones I grew up with the KJV as well, but I don't find it as distracting there. Maybe that's because the archaic syntax and verb forms already have me reading the text in a different way than I would a modern translation. (I admittedly prefer the approach taken in the original 1611 printing, where a different typeface was chosen for the supplied words.)

nice... a revealing comparison and analysis of these two influential versions... - the ESV rendering in 2 Cor 4.1 may be easier to read, but the problem is that it is not a *translation* , but rather a *re-writing* of the text... it's two different things, to state that "we have received mercy" and to say "by the mercy of God"... if Paul had meant to say "by the mercy of God", there are some excellent expressions available in Greek to express that... this is one of many examples in the ESV where the Greek is unnecessarily re-written in the text and the true translation is degraded to the footnotes (unnecessary because it is not a case of a special "idiom" in the Greek that could justify it) ... they have missed many opportunities to improve the RSV... this is a little ironic, since the translators and publishers of the ESV have always especially marketed the ESV as an "essential literal translation"... it seems that the bar for what is supposed to be "essential literal" is a little too low in the case of the ESV... as long as one has the feature of footnotes, all re-writing or interpretation should be placed there... it is somewhat easier to respect the NIV because they do not pretend to be essential literal, they only pretend to be "accurate"... :)

Great review. Glenn Colley and Jim Dearman are two excellent gospel preachers that were in your list. I also like the NKJV over the ESV, but consider the ESV a good translation too.

That was just awesome and I'm now impatiently awaiting part two. After a question I had asked you about a month ago I decided to make the ESV my second translation after the NKJV. I know that scholars frown on the NKJV because of its NT source text but the translators notes I believe makes a world of a difference which in my humble opinion makes the NKJV one the most important texts. And with Thomas Nelson coming with amazing editions, there are plenty of options for the NKJV. These are my go to translations and I do agree that they go well together. Having the more literal translation with slightly more interpretative ESV makes for an marriage. I really appreciate this video and looking forward to next part. One question though, which editions of the NKJV and ESV did you show at the start of the video? They both look awesome. Again Sir Jones, I really appreciate this video and hope you make more of them even I know they are time consuming. God bless you.

The two Bibles I showed at the beginning are the ESV Creeds and Confessions Bible, which I reviewed in November 2020, and the NKJV Classic Verse-by-Verse Center Column Reference Bible, which I reviewed in December 2019. All of the slides for Part 2 are ready, I think. I need to write the script, record the audio, and cobble it all together. I hope to be able to do all that within the next two weeks. The two translations do complement each other well. One is more literal; the other is easier to read. One sticks closely to the Masoretic Text; the other leans toward the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient versions more often. One follows a New Testament base text close to the Majority; the other makes independent text-critical choices among readings in the older manuscripts.

I think videos like these help people make more informed choices when they choose which Bible to use as their main translation. I'm no Hebrew nor Greek scholar, but from your comparison videos, all taken together, I believe these two translations are very useful for deep studies, devotions, preaching and teaching and I'd encourage that they be used together. One gripe I have with both Thomas Nelson and Crossway is the editions they publish without the full set of translators notes. Why do that? Also it's easier to find all black letter ESV than it's to find in the NKJV.

I think a huge weakness of the NKJV is that it is based upon the Textus Receptus. I would be so good if they used newer critical editions of the Greek NT and retained the beauty and dignity of the KJV English - now that would be an unbeatable Bible. Thank you for the review!

Thanks for the kind comment, Jim! I agree with you about the TR, but to my mind the NKJV's translation notes, though they're far from comprehensive, go a long way toward mitigating its poor choice of base text. I like your idea for a critical edition-based translation along the lines of the KJV.

@@RGrantJones You are correct. The NKJV has some extremely useful notes pointing out differences from the Majority Text and the modern Critical Text (of the NT).

@@alanhowe1455 The Majority Text is not equivalent to the Textus Receptus which is the base text for both the NKJV and KJV. There are many differences between the Majority Text (MT) and the Textus Receptus (TR). For example, 1 John 5:7 is not found in the MT and there many places where the MT agrees with the Critical Text (NU) but doesn't agree with the TR. You can see some of these in the NKJV footnotes. I would have loved for the NKJV to have used the Majority Text for their base text and place TR and NU variants in the footnotes.

@@alanhowe1455 I think the WEB translation does this I'm not entirely sure. I do know it uses the MT for its new testament source text. It's just that it's not a printed edition but available online copyright free.

The kjv generally has forced me over the years to think about the words. I like the esv for reading but not study. IT’s language doesn’t provoke as much thought about the text. I use both

I like the ESV, I love the NKJV. I understand the desire many people have for a readable text over a literal text, but I’m not one of them. I would rather have something as close to what the author initially wrote than what an interpreter thinks is more understandable to the reader. I understand it’s a fine line, and compromises are always made, but too many are made in the majority of modern day translations for my tastes.

i find the nkjv easier to read.i notice i slow down more on the esv.

I think the RV of 1881 in the interlinear often is exact same as KJV. But when it differs it seems as good or better. Especially in margin alternatives. So ESV / NASB has good lineage in line of RV. It seems NKJV did not have any "children". CAN be good or bad I guess.

I do not understand why someone would earnestly say that the ESV is harder than the NKJV. Maybe it's some king james fellows once agian trying to say that the nkjv is the go to and "anyone can read it, its not hard." Or maybe the esv bias is that the "esv being the more literal modern one, has a higher reading level. And is therefor more trustworthy?" I do not know

CAMBRIDGE seems to understand the acceptability of the ESV. In that the last 2 offerings..TOPAZ and in Nov the DIADEM will come out in ESV FIRST.

The ESV seems to be more loose in its transaltion than what is advertised. I think its closer to the CSB on the spectrum than the NKJV or the NASB.

I think I like NASB 95 AND 20. For readability...accuracy. NKJV for references and notes..and readability. ..and italics. KJV if you want to buy a KJV from Cambridge. Beautiful bold and dark PRINT. CSB.. will view their handcrafted editions on October 15 release. ESV..ease to understand or if a red leather TOPAZ only comes in THAT version. Subject to change. Thanks for. A thotful review.

Literal is not always OPTIMAL. As more recent translations seem to be. E.g. NASB. CSB. ESV. IMO

I wish they would have added "people/tribe*" in italics for "you" plural (ye). "You" w/ John in italics, "YOU" w/God in italics, "You" w/Jesus in a italics, ect... for "you" singular(thou ,thy thee). I find these virsions a lot more confusing than the KJV "Who is who here🤔" You/I have to use up so much more energy figuring out who is who. By looking it up in the KJV (thou, ye)? or a computer investigation.

These are the translations I prefer... The NKJV first, then the ESV. I am considering the NASB, but cannot decide between the 1995 and the NASB 2020.

One major difference between them is the NASB 2020's use of gender inclusive language. If you prefer it, or if it doesn't bother you, I would recommend you go with the 2020. Another option is to wait for the complete Legacy Standard Bible to be published, perhaps as early as the autumn of 2021.

I think NKJV has not been updated since 1982. NASB 2020 not as popular as 1995. ESV is a good translation. Crossway has some good bibles. Nelson has some good bibles. For NKJV. Zondervan good for NASB. Nelson has good hi lites In RED in verse #s and headings. Schuyler does NOT. .in verse #s.

The NKJV is the best counterfeit of the true. The NKJV is not an honest update of the KJV. The NIV, ESV, NASV, etc. are in agreement with the New World Translation in many, many ways. All three of these translations agree with the biased NWT remove or cast doubt upon Matthew 17:21; 18:11; 23:14; Mark 7:16; 9:44, 46; 11:26; 15:28; Luke 17:36; 23:17; John 5:4; Acts 8:37; 15:34; 24:7; 28:29; and Romans 16:24. All four state a boldface lie in Mark 1:2. All four remove some or most of Matthew 6:13; Luke 4:4, 8; Romans 8:1; and 1 John 5:7. All four remove "study" from 2 Timothy 2:15. All four have two separate people killing Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 and 2 Samuel 21:19. All four cast doubt upon Mark 16:9-20 and John 7:53-8:11, yet include it by separation from the text or place in a footnote. Birds of a feather flock together. I could add the NKJV with the other four bibles that corrupted or changed Romans 1:18, 25, 2 Corinthians 2:17, 1 Timothy 6:10, 20, and 2 Timothy 2:15 because these passages are aimed at the dishonest ones on the committees.

Based on italics for supplied. Words by translators. Only KJV NKJV NASB 95 NASB 20 Do this. So ESV and CSB fail. In what seems . I think NASB 95 is better than NASB 2020
