This is Part Two of a two-part video comparing the New King James Version (NKJV) and the English Standard Version (ESV).
Part One ( • NKJV vs ESV, Part 1 ) provided background information on both translations and concluded that the ESV is easier to read. It also presented evidence that the NKJV is more literal, at least in the New Testament.
Part 2 contrasts the Old and New Testament source texts the translators relied upon, then presents a few examples of where the ESV and NKJV interpret passages differently. It also provides a brief survey of facts one should consider before choosing one of these translations. At the end, it illustrates a graphical method a person could use to help decide between two translations.

@@alanhowe1455 - I examined the 2020 NASB in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJijgqWDnJ2ohGg.html . From what I've seen of the Legacy Standard Bible so far, I'm enthusiastic. I preordered a copy of the New Testament. But I'm also a bit anxious about the quality of the proofreading, since I found a few typos in the sample of Mark lsbible.org posted.

@@RGrantJones It seems the NASB also doesn't have the expanded passages shown in the ESV much like the NKJV. So likely the LSB also doesn't include some of these DSS passages. Do you think it's better to include these DSS passages, and do you have a preference for the ESV over NKJB or NASB?

3 years late but here's my thoughts. The analysis is great but unlikely to sway anyone who has already picked one over the other. And that's good--it's good because it means they have confidence in what they read. I personally have bounced back and forth begween the two but because of this analysis am leaning towards the NKJV. What did it for me is the use of italics, which I find to be more helpful and honest, and the NKJV just has better footnotes.

I appreciate your comments on the heterogeneity of the Critical Texts and the "Alexandrian" text grouping. I agree with your comment on each translation defining its own critical text, and I have even found places the KJV uses non-TR readings. I'm very grateful for this comparison video. Having watched both parts, I thought at the beginning, this comparison would force me to chose one or the other, but I rather come to the conclusion that having them both is better. For some reason I can't quite yet explain, I prefer the NKJV and the Byzantine text, I just wished it would have gone with the Majority Text reading in the main body and have the variant TR reading the footnotes. The ESV presents a nice compliment to the NKJV in my eyes and I believe a combination of the two makes for great Bible study. I just wished the NKJV had not capitalised pronouns for diety and had more all black letter text editions. Thanks for these two delightful comparison videos of two very good translations. Well done. By the way, I know you had documented some aditional places where the NKJV differs from the NU and M texts but has no footnotes to show, would it be too forward of me to ask you if you would share those with me? If you are willing, would send me a copy, if you have it compiled that it? The footnotes of the NKJV showing the variant readings between the two text types is what makes it an important Bible in my estimation. This is a good video! Recently there have been rumors about the nkjv being regularly updated for a long period of time without announcing it. It would be great if you can do a video making a comparison of the last announced nkjv edition and the recent ones...

Thanks for the kind words! I did a video about changes in the NKJV (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKqPpZaQxqnao6s.html ), but at the time the only modifications I knew about were made in 1984. Since then, someone pointed out a one-word change in Jeremiah 34.16, likely dating to the 1990s. I may read through a short book like Ephesians in an NKJV I have that was printed in about 2010 side-by-side with an edition printed in 2021 and see if I can find any changes.

@@RGrantJones aha! It turned out your video was one of those that I was checking out on the nkjv! I checked through the verses that you've mentioned in the video along with the comment on jeremiah 34:16 with the 1996 nkjv that I have and it was the same as the newer edition that you've showed. 22 years (most likely more if from the early 1990s) apart from my 1996 and your 2018, those verses identified are still the same but we won't know for sure if there are any other changes apart from these. So far the changes from 1984 aren't too drastic that it causes doctrinal issues. Some people did comment that there are blasphemous renderings in the nkjv but were not able to point out the verses. Still finding out. Anyway, awesome work mate!

Thanks for the kind words! For private study, I haven't settled on a single translation, but I use the RV, ASV, NKJV, and '77 NASB frequently. For devotional reading, I spend most of my time with the RSV. At the moment, I have an ASV and an RSV within arm's reach.

@@RGrantJones Thanks for your reply! I started with the NKJV about 20 years ago, when I decided to actually read and study the bible and see if I could find God at age 47. And I did! All of the verses I have memorized are from that translation. Recently, however, it seems like it has kind of fallen out of favor with some radio and bible teachers I listen to, with some going to the ESV, or NASB. The church I attend uses the NRSV, which I just don't love. I have the ESV, and the 95 NASB , and I enjoy reading from them. I recently purchased a KJV, which I never used to be able to make much sense of, but I find that now is beautiful to read, though I have to spend a little extra time with, looking up archaic words and expressions like froward, and conversation, and superfluity of naughtiness, and the like. Overall, I love that it finally makes sense. I have not tried the RV and ASV yet. I've not been able to divorce myself from the NKJV. I like the wording, and don't find it difficult to read, I think due to the way it's broken up mostly, and I like the way it flows. Just personal preference. But I had thought maybe it wasn't the translation to use because of the manuscripts it was based on. Thank you so much for your comparison between the NKJV and ESV (and your reviews on the NASB 95 and 2020). I'm now confident that though different, not inferior to those, and I'm more comfortable keeping the NKJV as my main translation, for now anyway. Please keep the reviews coming. It must be a ton of work and take a lot of time to do one the way you do it, but know that you're very good at it, and that it helped me a lot, and I'm grateful. And I'm sorry this was so long.

I greatly appreciate these translation comparison runthroughs, they are incredibly useful and I know they take a long time to put together. The issue for me at the end of the day comes down to the base text in both as the other issues are less important to me personally - and considering there are respected pastors and theologians on both sides of the issue, I don't know how I as a layperson should decide. The TR certainly has some questionable readings that have very little, if any, Greek support, but the NA in many places relies on basically two manuscripts as well (they're just older manuscripts) - so on the balance which do we trust?

That is nonsense, that means you will let the truth be determined and explained by a bunch of worldy theologians (pharisees). The bible is the inspired word of God written by holy men. ESV, KJV, NIV, NASB etc are corrupt versions and there is ample proof to show the heretical doctrines being exposed, both NKJV and ESV are satanic counterfeits. The holy scriptures came from Antioch and these corrupt blasphmous versions have theirs sources in Alexandria and the Vatican.

Why are you unable you determine what the word of God is, I can and my answer is the KJV...As a laymen you ask, no that ain't the problem...The trouble with you folks is that you are wicked and idol worshippers. you cannot discern what the truth is instead you read counterfeits like NKJV and ESV and choose between the evils (yes I can Judge). Well done. Although I’m not a KJVO guy, your video has convinced me that the Byzantine/Majority text family is the most reliable. Although themselves have issues here and there.

The observations made in part 1 & 2 regards readability are insightful. The KJV/AKJV/NKJV are all in my opinion (as an older man approaching 60), more likely to appeal to an 'adult' or mature audience.

Thanks for another great video. In light of the textual differences between the NKJV and ESV in the New Testament which textual base do you like more? Personally I've been won over to the Byzantine theory of Maurice Robinson so I have no issues with TR text.

Would be interested to see a Bible translation Tier List. Noticing that there's almost no video like that on youtube (maybe a couple). Tier list videos seem quite popular (youtube Mario tier list or US Presidents tier list) -- would be a great visual and overview of your opinions.

Thanks for the kind comment, Gary, and for the question! I don't have a single favorite. I use the RV, ASV, KJV, NKJV, and the '77 NAS frequently for in-depth study. In the Old Testament, I usually have the NETS at hand, even if I'm using a Masoretic-based translation. In recent weeks, I've been reading the RSV in the evenings before going to bed.

The NASB 2020 and I think also the 1995.. when you can get a big print of it and translate some of the footnotes in big print and I guess I'd never seen them before because they were too small to see but sometimes if you get a Big Font it will also have Big foot notes and a big concordance but most people don't think about that and just don't read things that they can't see but it is refreshing when you can.

Great video. I find it strange that so many Christian Bible translations rely on the Masoretic text so much, considering that the New Testament often quotes from the Septuagint, including verses that aren't found in the MT, like you show at 2:37 with Hebrews. Also, one correction. At 7:05, you and the chart say "Mark", when the footnote says "John". Keep up the great work.

I generally use the 1928 American book, but the 1662 book is also excellent. I'm not very familiar with the more modern versions with three-year lectionaries. Thanks for the question!

it is interesting how the changes/augmentations that ESV has in the Old Testament would make it more favorable to the Eastern Orthodox (and I suppose also the Roman Catholics?) perspective of relying more heavily on the Septuagint, but the changes/absences in the New Testament would tend to make it less favorable It is especially curious, since a lot of those New Testament absences are reintroduced, as you point out in another video, by the ESV Gideon's Version, yet Gideon's International seems to have a rather poor view of the Roman Church (I can only wonder what their perspective on Eastern Christians)

Thank you for the encouraging comment! You may want to read the Preface to the 2016 ESV. It states quite clearly that it is based on UBS5 and NA28.

@@RGrantJones Okay, thanks, I'll look for one. All my ESVs predate 2016. The only changes between NA27 and 28 are the general epistles. I'll plan to check if they applied the changes to Jude 5 and 2 Peter 3:10.

Are there differences between the NKJV and the KJV in regards to the Textus Receptus? I mean, does the NKJV ever use a rendering more in line with modern critical editions in a place where the KJV had a distinctly TR reading?

Aaron - that's a good question, but not one I've looked into. I've seen videos where the speaker accosts the NKJV for differing from the KJV, but so far I haven't found any differences in the translations that are due to differences in the source texts.

@@RGrantJones Well thanks anyway (sorry for the late response, KZfaq didn't notify me). Also, I got some more information about the new Thompson Chain bibles Zondervan is publishing. Apparently they'll be available in June of this year, but in May of next year they're coming out with editions in comfort print type setting! I also contacted Zondervan hoping they might make will one with a black letter option, but unfortunately they still are only in red letter. I couldn't get any information on the text and translation notes in the nasb, so I guess we'll have to wait till it comes out. They'll be available in a bonded leather and an imitation leather. But anyway, I just thought you might be interested. I know you already have a few Thompson chains.

I came across an interesting variation the other day while reading Jude. In verse 1, the Critical Text lists the adjectives describing Jude’s readers as: “Called, beloved, and kept”. The TR reading lists them as: “sanctified, preserved (kept), and called.” So the variant is between “sanctified” and “beloved” and also the order in which they are listed. The NKJV follows the TR reading with “sanctified” instead of “beloved” but changes the ORDER to follow the CT reading (called, sanctified, preserved).

When you say that the NKJV is harder to read than the ESV, do you mean the sentence structure and/or English usage is not smooth or elegant enough when compared to the ESV? Or do you mean something else? Thanks very much!!

Thanks for the question, Fernando! I have in mind a combination of things, to include more advanced vocabulary, lengthier sentences, obscure phrasing, and literalness. Because the NKJV is more literal, it supplies fewer explanations in the text. What's puzzling in the original remains so in the translation.

+1:55 funny that the Orthodox Church doesn't prefer the ESV rendering considering the views of the priests who run the Lord of Spirits podcast. haha They provide an explanation why "sons of God" makes sense in its own terms rather than referring obscurely to the descendants of Jacob.

My Dear Sir, thank you for a fine video. Regarding John 1:18, l’m of the view that CBGM will determine both “Son” & “God” to be scribal additions. Restating John 1:14’s “only begotten” makes perfect sense w/o either “Son” or “God.” UBS 5 gives some limited manuscript support for such a reading & best explains the two other readings. Very interesting! You may well be right. The CBGM has already shown itself capable of selecting readings with minimal manuscript evidence. And "only begotten" does seem to beg the scribe to round it off with a noun.

Having discovered a personal size large PRINT bible in ESV ..I find I have no urge to multiply ESV versions. Unlike KJV and lately NKJV. I did multiply NASB s .trying to decide which I liked better. Answer for me is BOTH. CSB and Holman do some nice LARGE PRINT personal sizes. NKJV is my favourite today. Since it sounds right to me. ESV may be second. Then NASB. Then CSB. I especially like large print that is easy to READ.

I like Catholic and Orthodox approach that they have very few translations in any given language, and those have to be certified by their authorities. Jews and Muslims do the same with their scripture translations. Protestants have tons of translations, which creates a lot of confusion. I think the best Protestant translations are ESV and NIV, but I don't see why there should be SO many of other translations, many appear to be quite bad.

Thanks for commenting, Hassan! I'm not sure you're right when you say that Orthodox translations have to be certified by their authorities. I don't see any such authorization in my copies of the EOB NT. The Catholic authorities in English-speaking countries seem happy to authorize a number of Protestant translations for Catholic use, although sometimes with minor edits (RSV, NRSV, Good News, New English Bible, CEV). The ESV and the 1984 NIV are good translations, but I would hate to be limited to those two choices. These days I use the ASV for study and the RSV for devotional reading. I would miss them if they disappeared. Personally, I'm somewhat anxious about an attitude I see among my non-believing neighbors: that since the Bible endorses an archaic view of morality, the State should edit it to bring it into line with modern views. Not too long ago, one of my co-workers expressed that opinion.

@@RGrantJones Ok, I don't know that much, however too many and modern translations are just not good, what Protestants have. Stability requires to have fewer translations, my idea only. Bible has a correct view of morality, family etc. Secular humanism which your colleagues are espousing is just a fad and is one of the many secular ideologies and God surrogates which West has invented in the last two centuries to replace Christianity. Each and everyone of these ideologies/movements fell apart. So, this will go away too. I think any state can not temper with Bible, only religious authorities can do it, but probably not the state? This is about Muslim response to secular humanism and modernity and anti-religious sentiments. It is about how to make a case for God and conservative values. Very interesting lecture by a famous British Muslim scholar. @@rodgermilner7800 I think it's because there haven't been many literal(ish) modern Catholic translations that don't have gender neutral language (NRSVCE) and sound inspiring (unlike the NAB). I'm starting to see the ESVCE become more popular in Catholic circles.

@@rodgermilner7800 - Regarding the RSV's popularity among Catholics, Aaron's explanation makes sense to me. As to why Protestants rarely use it, it was popular among mainline denominations in the 1980s and earlier, but they largely switched their loyalty to the NRSV when it was published in 1989. To the extent that the ESV is viewed as the RSV Evangelical Edition, the RSV lives on among Evangelicals.

Lol. I think my color chart toward the end gives a slight edge to the ESV. But recently I haven't been spending much time with either. I often use the ASV, RV, or KJV for private study and the RSV for devotional reading.

I like the NRSV better than RSV. Somewhat keeping with my bent toward later is better. Which would help me in favouring NASB 2020 as much or more than 1995.

for a Trinitarian, to call Jesus "the only God" (John 1.18), could easily sound like some kind of heresy, and if not, at least a little "strange" for the language of the NT, in a passage that speaks so beautifully of the relation between the Son and the Father... many Trinitarian confessions include the line "God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit", and then, suddenly, enter The Son, Jesus, "the only God"... er...uh... sounds like a "foreign" element, if not a "heretical" element... the only "alternate" translation that tops that in sounding "weird" is "the unique God" - which is awful, to be honest... this is a twisted reading and rendering, and it is a *mystery* why so many Bible translators accept it as legitimate... it must be "early papyri fever" .... either that or "old majuscule fever" .... i have no other explanation.... (other than that over 99.5% of the Greek MSS have "the only-begotten Son" and that only some 5 MSS have "(the) only-begotten God" and that μονογενής should not be rendered "only") - and the very same are "looking strange" on those who accept readings in the received text that are supported by "only a handful of MSS", not to mention those "few MSS" used by Erasmus ... compared to all the "embarrassment of riches" of MSS we have today..... (sorry, couldn't resist...) :-))

Thanks for commenting, helge! I agree that the translation 'the only God' causes difficulty for us Trinitarians. But the underlying Greek didn't seem to be an issue for Basil of Caesarea, which suggests to me the 'the only God' isn't the best translation. Or perhaps the fourth century defenders of the Trinity who sometimes quoted the monogenes theos reading in John 1.18 understood 'only' to distinguish the ousia and not the hypostasis, though I doubt it. I suspect they read 'monogenes' in the sense of 'only begotten', as in the older translations. But I'm way out of my depth here!
