As many railfans in the northeast know, Memorial Day Weekend for 2013 was to be one of the most exciting weekends this year! Why is that? Well, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society made a return to the Pittsburgh Line for the Horseshoe Curve Special, a special public excursion led by their ex-New York, Chicago, & St. Louis (Nickel Plate Road) #765, a beautiful 1944 Lima-built S-2 Class 2-8-4 "Berkshire". The FWRHS, in partnership with Norfolk Southern, Mid-America Railcar Leasing, Iowa Pacific, and the Washington DC Chapter NRHS, would take passengers from Lewistown, PA over the scenic Pittsburgh Line to the famous Horseshoe Curve, which is considered to be the 8th engineering wonder of the world! Along with NKP 765 are two of Norfolk Southern's "Heritage Units", ES44AC's #8098 (painted to represent Conrail) and #8102 (painted to represent the Pennsylvania Railroad), providing help to the train. Now, please watch as this beautiful maverick of steam traverses the scenic Pittsburgh Line presented to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on May 25th, 2013

I for one like the Heritage Fleet diesels. Lest we forget, it was the Mighty Pennsylvania Railroad whose mainline the train travels. And props for Conrail, that rose like a Pheonix from the very ashes of the PRR, and once again showed how to run a profitable railroad. The presence of the PRR and CR Heritage Units is well deserved and reminds us that it is truly Norfolk Southern we have to thank this magnificent sight.

Thank You for posting this video. I grew up near Lewistown. Though I didn’t grow up in the age of steam, my father did. He was raised Amish and the one day they were excused to do whatever they wanted was Accession Day. He and his friends would hike over Jack’s Mountain and Big Ridge to go to Mattawna to watch the trains go by. My father used to take us there too. It was one of my fondest memories. There was a large concrete bumper we used to sit on. Though the bumper was removed in the 1980’s, I still go there every time I visit home.

I'm 70 years young and I live in the east end of Harrisburg, PA (half way to Hershey, PA). When I was a kid I can remember the Pennsylvania RR and the Reading RR running their trains through Harrisburg on their mainlines with steam locomotives. I still live in Harrisburg and every once in awhile the Nickle Plate runs through town and I can hear the distinct whistles, bells and thump, thump of the steam in action. Thanks for sharing your video.

Gorgeous footage of this Berkshire! I saw her when she came into Harrisburg on 8-19-2012... this sure brings back the excitement of that day, plus a lot more with all the footage you filmed! Beautiful angle shots and steady camerawork make this a monumentous tribute to the 'lady!' I wish my Dad could have lived long enough to see her! He worked at the Harrisburg station for over 35 years... saw a lot of these beauties! This would have been a dream come true for him!

Stunning video! I was on the train on Sunday, and the disappointing part of being on the train was that you didn't get to see (or hear) much of the 765 except when we went around curves. The train was so long, there were hardly any opportunities to go up and look at the 765. Your video helps with that!

Probably both. Most steam excursions have a diesel right behind them to correctly operate track-side safety equipment and provide brake air for the train. The diesel is simply idling along to operate its vital equipment. If the route involves a hill though the diesel will help the steamer up it, simply because steam engines tend to not do well on steep hills.
