Farewell to Childhood (Mental Health Film Board, 1951)

Produced by the North Carolina Board of Health and sponsored by the New York-based Mental Health Film Board, this film focuses on "the trials of adolescence," in particular the experiences of a girl named Susan who feels misunderstood by her parents and others. She chafes against their rules, and is also deeply disappointed when she doesn't get the part in the school play that she was expecting. She feels lonely and unimportant. A sympathetic adult from school helps her talk through her concerns, encouraging Susan to try to understand her parents' need to protect her. This adult also speaks with Susan's mother, and encourages tolerance of adolescent ups and downs, the importance of listening to one's child, and flexibility in household rules.

My mom used to go on and on about boys & movie stars in her diaries in the 50's. She'd say "that Clark Gable just sends me!! He makes me swoon !" 😂😂😂

@Alice Cook..Agree totally. My oldest daughter was always saying as a teenager, "Rachel's mom is her best friend!" (Rachel was a mess). And I would say, "I don't want a 15 year old friend and you certainly don't want a 40 year old friend. We can be friends when you are 30.". This was 20 years ago. lol

I completely agree. You know what though? There comes a time between mothers and daughters when you CAN become friends. All of my kids are grown and out on their own. I'm 53 and my oldest is 33. (She's also my only daughter.) She and I are the closest we've ever been and she told me the other day that I'm her best friend. It actually made me teary eyed. She said of course I'm her mother first and foremost but that since she's gotten older, I've become more like her best friend. She said she confides in me things that she doesn't even tell her friends. I don't know if that is the norm once kids are grown or what. Sadly, my mom died when she was only 46 of breast cancer. So I never really got to have that grown maturity friendship that I might have had with my mom. At any rate, I'm not complaining. Lol. But again, I totally agree that you should PARENT FIRST when your kids are young. They don't need a friend, they need a parent. Hopefully there will be plenty of time later to become friends.

They can't handle THIS? I am so laughing. I had three teenagers at one time all a year and a half apart! I cracked up with the fact that the school guidance counselor was having Susan to her HOME. That would sure never happen today. I've been a teacher for 30 years and that would never be allowed in this day and age. Such an innocent time....Sometimes I wish I had been growing up in those years. I am 65 and though born in the 50's and a teenager in the late 60's and 70's it was SO different than watching this made in 1951.

I grew up in a small town where teachers had students over often for visits and yard party's. I used to mow the lawn for my bus driver and used to go to my teachers house to fish on her dock. With my parents permission of course.So it still happens in little places in the middle of no where.

Yes, my gym teacher had me over to his condo unit frequently for extra practice sessions. Even had a gym uniform on hand for me to change in to. He was so attentive and swell with extra health drinks and oil massages. It really helped bring up my grades in gym too!

@@RaptorFromWeegee As long as one is conscious of "grooming behavior." While this was most likely harmless it is not a good habit. I've been a teacher of middle school and high school students for 30 years. That would be very much frowned upon by any school administrator today. Likely a reprimand for the teacher.

@@kkheflin3 "grooming behavior"? When I was in school that word hadn't yet been invented. Pot got smoked in the boys room, teachers openly flirted with female students, coaches would score beer for the favored athletes. If a gym teacher was ever discovered scoring a student, at most it a been discretely brushed away, "for the dignity of the community". I was going for sarcastic humor before. Thought that was obvious.

@@RaptorFromWeegee Well I didn't pick up on the sarcasm! Sorry. I grew up in the 1960's and everything you described actually happened. One of my acquaintances in high school had an affair with the basketball coach as a senior in high school. Everyone knew about it and nothing was done. She graduated and they got married and had five children.

Parents have a right to worry about your safety. I know 15 years old is an older child-but it’s STILL A CHILD. They always say “I’m 15 years old and I’m already grown-up and I can do what I want. I can take care of myself,I’m not two anymore.” Susie-girl, come on now. I been there when I was 16/17 years old. Everyone’s been there. Until full adult me looks back & realizes I was behaving like a moron.

I agree. The details of style and dialect and such may have changed but the essence of the message is still valid. I'm sure now the blue haired SJW crowd would prefer to scream about patriarchy & white supremacy. But the fact still remain, times change, people don't.

My aunts hey-day was during the 40'sv&50's. I was the towns official bad girl. She'd say things like "I'll swanny". Or fall down into a nearby chair and feign fainting. Just like an old southern belle. Lol. When Elvis Presley died youd think she lost a husband. She cried for days and followed the news reports. On the day of the funeral she wore black and went to church. People made fun of her behind her back. I didnt think it was funny at all. I was almost 20 and my parents kept a close eye on her for a long time. We were actually scared she'd do something crazy. Years later we found out she was suffering from senile demential from syphilis.

@IARRCSim...Ain't that the truth. Having taught high school kids for 30 years I can assure everyone that teenagers in every generation are a challenge for their parents! I tell my students when they want to argue endlessly about something, "I don't argue with teenagers." When they say, "Why?" I say "Because never in the history of the world has a teenager stopped in the middle of an argument with an adult and said, 'OMG you are SO right and I am SO wrong!'"

Exactly their brains are still growing, it’s an awkward age. I’m remember arguing with my mother over the smallest things just for the sake of arguing I think .. it’s very strange to look back at when older. Teenagers will rebel and push boundaries depending on the way they are brought up. Too much freedom is a bad thing, lack of freedom to express one’s self is equally bad. What can you do 😂

And yet again they speak about them being 15 and young . As if they didn’t go through it to understand? Parents now tell us how they rebelled when they were young but they don’t seem to have that experience? And she says “ they’ll grow up to be regular people “ as if HUMANS haven’t been growing from babies to adults before ? They’re so concerned with everything they do like if it’s your pet dog and you know what is and what’s not dangerous and assume it doesn’t know better .
