SOUTH BEND, Ind. - March 3rd, 2024
The Irish will see you on Friday.
On Sunday, No. 17 Notre Dame (23-6, 13-5) avenged a loss earlier this season and downed No. 22 Louisville (23-8, 12-6), 74-58. It is the Irish’s second-straight ranked win and helped the group secure a double-bye for the upcoming ACC Tournament.
“The crowd, the energy, the way this team is gelling right now is just phenomenal,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey said after the game. “I’m so proud of the way we’ve fought through adversity. We’ve stuck together, and we’re peaking at the right time.”
Unsurprisingly, Hannah Hidalgo led the way with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals. Three others had at least 10 points: Sonia Citron (17), Maddy Westbeld (11) and Kylee Watson (10). Westbeld also had 11 rebounds, notching her 12th double-double of the season.
While the offense was clicking overall, the big story was on the opposite end of the court. It was another defensive masterclass for the Irish, who have not allowed more than 62 points to any opponent in the last six games. Sydney Taylor was Louisville’s leading scorer with 11 points. She was the only one in double-figures.
The first frame featured a pair of lead changes and four ties. Notre Dame started with the lead, as Anna DeWolfe grabbed the tip and scored a few seconds in. Notre Dame also ended with the lead. A Citron 3-pointer rattled around and in to close Q1 scoring.
The second quarter featured another lead change and four more ties. The most notable tie was courtesy of a banked-in 3-pointer by Bransford. But the Cardinals took over from there and ended the quarter on a 9-2 run. They shot 58.8 percent in the second quarter.
But out of the locker room, it was all Notre Dame.
The Irish started the second half on a 7-0 run with layups from Westbeld and Watson capped off by a DeWolfe trey. They subsequently went on an 18-1 run and pushed Louisville into an 0-12 shooting stretch. The 20-8 paint-point advantage the Cardinals had at halftime was all but gone by the end of Q3; it was then 20-18. Notre Dame won the third quarter 30-10 and shot 84.6 from the floor (11-13). Hidalgo had 9 points and Citron had 8.
“I think a lot changed after halftime, but I would say the biggest change was we were getting stops and getting out in transition,” Citron said after the game. “We are a great team in transition, and that is when we are fully able to play our game.”
The Irish kept the Cardinals from going on any sort of run to close it out in Q4, and Hidalgo went 3-3 from the floor and 3-3 from the line. She had 18 points in the second half alone. Notre Dame finished the game with 13 steals and 8 blocks. Citron had 4 of the 8. That is a career-high.
As a result of Sunday’s win, Notre Dame will be the No. 4 seed in the 2024 ACC Tournament. The Irish will play Friday and will find out their opponent following Thursday’s games.

Louisville played ND like they “deserved” to win. They seldom played good defense, and underestimated ND. Even if they were to win this game, it would’ve been by a less that 2 pts. That’s how badly ND wants it. Louisville needs to better communicate on offense. Too many times we had players forcing shots rather than looking for their open teammate. Louisville underestimated Notre Dame, and didn’t even try on defense. ND deserved this win. I’m a cardinal fan, but tonight was just lazy and selfish. ND passed the ball, yet Louisville kept forcing shots. Go cardinals, but be better.

Of all the top women's BB teams, three stand out: 1) Notre Dame, 2) Stanford, 3)UCONN. I put Notre Dame at #1 because the are the best functioning TEAM in D1- WCB. Stanford is #2 because they have a super dominant BIG. UCONN is at #3 because the are using one of the best 1-2 punches in WBB: Paige Bueckers & Aalyiah Edwards. Let's back that up. In any game they've played this year, Notre Dame can expect 5 girls to score in dbl figures: Hidalgo, Citron, Westbeld, Watson & DeWolfe. Nobody else has that skill level so evenly distributed. Stanford's expectations are totally different: They expect a double-double from Cameron Brink every game plus they expect 5 to 7 blocks/game from her. They don't know who's else is going to perform on that level. They only hope that Hannah Jump, Bosganna, Dimitri, Irioffin, or Lapolo will hit double digits with a 45 to 55% shooting percentage. What makes them different from Notre Dame is that Stanford will not win unless Brink gets a double-double & at least 5 blocks. Notre Dame can win if Hidalgo doesn't get 25 points & five steals. UCONN is totally dependent on Paige Bueckers & Aalyiah Edwards. If Paige doesn't get 24 points on 50% shooting, and if Edwards doesn't get 18 points on 75% shooting, they lose. So, in my opinion, there are three ways to win the NCAA Tournament in 2024. All the teams fit the three molds just reviewed. Who will win will depend on who shoots & defends the best.

I've watched Paige play a lot since her freshman year. She's fantastic in multiple phases of the game. However, she's not so good that her team should be considered a top 3 standout. She has yet to have a standout game this year against an elite team. Edwards is excellent, but teams can pack the paint and make UCONN beat them from the perimeter. Against the best teams, UCONN's offense gets real sketchy if Paige isn't hitting from outside and Edwards is getting mauled in the paint. KK Arnold isn't a scorer, Nika Muhl is a limited and reluctant scorer, and while Ash Shade is a good scorer, good luck if you're relying on her as a freshman to produce against an elite team. Elite 8 is the ceiling this year for UCONN and I wouldn't be surprised if they went out a round earlier. Assuming good health, they should be significantly better against elite teams next year and go deeper in the tournament.

@@Kevin-tr6jsagreeed. kK can’t score against bigs because she keeps forcing her way into paint, unfortunately that backfired when they played SC with Kamila Cardozo. Nika only has assists, and defense is okay. Scoring wise, I’d wish they wouldn’t rely so much and Paige because, Aaliyah can score when she plays bigs that seldom know how to dominate the paint. She was struggling against Kamila. Ashlynn shade is a reliable scorer, but she can’t be the only dropping pts. I love UCONN but man we is looking rough this year!

Funny thing.I watched S.Carolina against Notre Dame and U Conn and I believe they pounded them both. They handled U Conn without Cardoso.I believe they are the team to beat.Next year features Hildago and Miles /Bueckers and Fudd , should be a wild ride.
