Weight isn't really an issue. You have to look at the pressure you're placing on the ground, you certainly do have a lot more weight but you also have a lot more tyre and area that weight is distributed over. The load any given piece of ground will support is a function of pressure rather than weight.

Cool to hear about the camera car. I'm the unofficial photographer for our off road trips with a couple dozen kombis and I find myself not only carrying all my camping and recovery equipment, but also hundreds of pounds of photo equipment. It is always the camera guys that are doing the same stuff everyone else is doing plus running/driving up ahead to get the shot 😉. My newest photo accessory for shooting while driving is pretty hilarious, but it will take a campfire chat for me to tell about that one.

Dual cab RC Colorado with the 4JJ1 engine. Cheap to purchase, underrated rig, reliable, something different. SAS it, GVM upgrade, small chassis extension to fit a big tray & canopy, full length roof rack with space for fixed solar and swags. Substantial 12V system. Storage of water tanks, batteries, onboard air all under tray. Big tube bar work all round. Decent flares to fit some offset wheels for a low and wide stance running 35s

A Mog came to mind first for me. They're awfully slow on the highway, but almost nothing stops a Mog. I thought they had some smaller models... I ran the Rubicon in Wackofornia and Unimogs are used to bring in lots of equipment for the Jeepers Jamboree. We passed several on our way out. A convoy of Mogs is quite the sight! The Sierras aren't much like your trails though. You guys use 79 series , so why not one of those with an auto tranny? Is there a 4 door model? My brother in law has a built FZJ. Ive got a very modified and beaten Yota pickup to help out the 'Cheeps' ! Yotas go everywhere! Toyota's rock!

From the practical point , a wagon that can carry more than most " 1 ton Utes " is the Mercedes G-Wagon 300 professional . Payload 1,200 kg , 200kg on the roof , Front, Centre and Rear diffs , front and rear live axels . It got single 4 seats , take one out for extra space and weight, dual battery 24 volt system - These are factory specs . The Nissan GU Patrol with the standard GVM UPGRADE brings it normally to 550 kg payload . These numbers makes the vehicle look a little overloaded with all the gear + men , second spare etc. .Impressive that the vehicle makes it through all of this so well. Troop Carrier payload without GVM is 892kg.

For the new camera rig, I think you should go with a Landcruiser XT200. If you could I would have the dual cab a little extended depending how much room you need. You will have heaps of space in the back seat for the camera gear along with the 3rd person in the backseat. You will also have extra space in the canopy for your fridge, tools and extra things for the camera gear etc. They are extremely capable and very tough. I would go with 3 inch lift and lots of ARB or TJM accessories.

Copped 105 series 3 inch lift on 35s with a nice big canopy on the back fully decked out with all the draws and storage will give them so much more room and a better way of setting stuff up with pretty much the same 12v setup that’s in the GU. What do the crew need, want or what are they thinking? They will have a far better idea than any of us, of what works and what doesn't when they're the ones using it everyday. I imagine they're madly in love with the GU as they've been together for so long now and they just want it to live on forever.

Definitely landcruiser chopped dual cab conversion, not too long to keep those approach and departure angles happy. lift it up, 35's and a decent bash plate and some underbody protection. Solar panels and batteries are a must. front bar and rear bars with front and rear winches. Fit out the rear conversion with spares storage, recovery gear and the Camera equipment and a fridge, should probably chuck one of those little pie ovens in there for the Camera boys as well, make sure they can get a decent bite while dragging you guys out of trouble. probably need a few extra CV's in there given the recent cruisers history. I'm sure DMW would be happy to help rig that beast up.
