It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZfaq experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1994 Renault Clio Mark I 1.4 RT Five Door, we get nostalgic about old French cars, get information wrong (again), deal with a very strange indicator stalk, operate an interesting central locking switch and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

Happy days. I had a 1.4 RT in Red in 1992. Exactly the same inside decor. Never had any problems with it other than needing to replace the drive shafts

Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting! These 1990s Renault interiors are quite distinctive, aren't they?

This is most delightful! Side and rear views remind me of the Peugeot 205 five door. Very Renault interior.

Yes, this was Renault's second attempt to take on the Peugeot 205, the first was the Supercinq (second generation Five) in 1985. Deadly small car rivals to this day!

Ahhh memories of my first nearly new car...only 3years old. It was a black rt... Part ex in the end due to sun roof leaking issues which affected the central locking....

Yes, with that locking button right underneath the sunroof aperture, I can see why that would be a problem! Thank you ever so much indeed for watching, commenting and subscribing, it means a lot.

Most enjoyable sir. The RT trim gained a significant list of equipment over the RN including colour coded bumpers, front fog lamps, different seats, sunroof, rev counter, desperate audio controls and a steering wheel.which to my knowledge was never available in any other Clio (or any other Renault come to think about it). Alloys were optional and of course the choice of the 1.4 or 1.8 litre engines. You know the RL didn't even get centre air vents and some early RL versions only had a four speed gearbox. The Baccara was wonderful but cost more than a Williams so I doubt many sold here. I remember all of those special editions, especially the oasis and Be-Bop. Every Renault I've seen from that era has the brown coolant bottle including my Mégane. It's due to the cast iron block meaning clean coolant quickly terms brown and stains the bottle. It's fantastic that Mr C has saved this one. Sadly I missed out on the MK1 Clio going straight from the R5 to a MK2 Clio. These were also awarded car of the year at launch. Oh by the way there was another sporty model that I only recently.learmed of but it wasn't available in the UK. The Clio.GP was basically a 1.8 16v but had different wheels and was numbered much like the original Williams.

This one was much more my sort of thing than an RL or an RN, no matter how many special edition ones of those two lower trim variants Renault marketed over here. The car I think would have originally featured working remote central locking too (don't know if it works now). The 1.4 Energy engine was surprisingly potent, probably because this car does not weigh a lot, and being just an 8 Valve, the accessible torque was quite plentiful. We like the Baccara, sir...

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes I'd say that the RT is definitely the pick of the bunch for most buyers ss it such a step up over the RN but without being any where neer as expensive to buy as the really exciting stuff would have been. The spec of that RT may not seem like anything special now but in the early 90's for a car in that segment it would have been a mighty impressive equipment list. I doubt many people would have opted for the 1.8 engine in their RT though, the 1.4e probably struck the best blend of power, refinement and economy.
@owensteele1645
@owensteele1645 Жыл бұрын
The specifications were very high for a car of this size. Didn't these have a strange central locking system that would arm the immobiliser if you didn't start the car within a minute of unlocking it? Some special editions had unique and unusual features. A friend of mine once had an RL Prima, and it still had 4 speed, open headrests, and no centre vents, also an L reg! I read somewhere that the Night and Day was the only version in this market with a 1.1 engine, and I once had a go in an RN Zoom edition that had 5 manual gears but no clutch pedal (like Saab's Sensonic system) and was very strange to drive. The sporty ones were really nice looking cars.
@markonmotoring
@markonmotoring Жыл бұрын
@@owensteele1645 Possibly right about the central.locking and immobiliser as that's how the system I'm my 97.Megane coupe works. Renault did experiment with five speed clutches manual gear boxes on both the MK1 Mégane and MK2 Clio, I didn't realise they were also available for the MK1 Clio. The idea never really took off for whatever reason.
@owensteele1645
@owensteele1645 Жыл бұрын
@@markonmotoring Yes, the RN Zoom was clutchless manual, and was only available near the end of the mk1's production life when I test drove it, in late '97. It would take about two seconds to take up the drive after selecting gear IIRC.

Joyful car. Definitely got the smokers pack there! Even that conceptually is a throwback itself - smoking rear passengers? 😂. I do like the first phase Clio, and the advertising campaign was legendary. I was probably about 10 but totally recall the adverts!

Whoever came up with the Nicole and Papa advertising campaign (which lasted until 1998) was an absolute genius. The Clio was a massive seller over here, but was even bigger on the Continent of course. Thank you for watching and subscribing!

Nicole...? Papa...? Is this 'Renault week' on the channel? 😁 Mr Currie has done it again. This original Clio is a delight. Nicer seat trim than my 5 year old Hyundai. 😎 Once the cigarette smells and stains are made history. I mentioned on the recent mark 2 Clio 'Austerity Edition' video that my parents had a Clio courtesy car for a week or so. It was a phase 3 1.2 RL or RN in red with black bumpers and a jazzy seat trim.

It's sort of happened by accident, sir! It's just the order in which these were filmed, although this video is not going public for another week or so. Mr Currie is indeed doing his civic duty by saving these non-compliant older cars from the upcoming Ultra Low Emission Zone expansion!

One of my best mates bought a brand new Clio RL in 1992 - at the time I had a Renault 5 (SuperCinq) - the amount of carry over parts was quite extensive - cleverly done - but I understand that the floorpan, suspension, and from the looks of it a lot of the dashboard architecture was taken from the 5 - it’s a testament to the fresher design of the Clio that it wasn’t picked up on, because in terms of feel, my 5 and my friends Clio were worlds apart in perceived quality, fit, finish and design. I then bought a Mk1 Punto, which all of a sudden made the Clio look very old………

I think that there were certain shared components between the Supercinq and the Clio, although the Clio feels far more than five years more modern than the R5! I did a Supercinq on the channel in 2020, I think the link is in the description below. Amazing to think that this car was released in 1990 in France and the R5 dates from 1985, they feel at least a decade apart.

Nice! Thanks for this video. We never got this car in New Zealand. However, it received a lot of publicity here thanks to the rallying versions appearing in magazines and on the telly. I understand from what I have seen in UK classic car magazines that the Williams version is a highly regarded classic.

I loved the Clio but I was very loyal to Peugeot in the early 1990s who had great reliability and a fantastic local Dealer. The Clio but was more comfortable and practical than my 1992 106 Graduate 1.1 and better looking and more modern than my 1994 Peugeot 205 1.1. The Peugeots had a superior gearchange buy the Renault seats were far more cosseting. As for ride comfort and handling the were more or less equal but the steering of the 205 in particular having had better feedback than any other small car except for a Mini or MiniMetro. The shape had aged pretty well.

I like the car and find it difficult to explain why. I think it's mainly because of the austere blue interior and the likeable instrumentation. I even like the glove-box, which would work nicely as a tray for the front passenger's lunch and cup of tea.
