It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZfaq experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, as we test a 2003 Toyota Yaris 1.5 T Sport near the seaside and wonder why it had so many model names around the world (Echo, Platz and Vitz depending on region and bodystyle). Be prepared for excessive wind noise, almost getting stuck in the back, a slightly underwhelming engine, lots of grey plastic, very good space efficiency, remarkably high mileage for such a nicely preserved car, early 2000s small car colour commentary, getting lost, marginal incompetence and generally little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

Thanks for answering my question on the previous Q&A Joseph! I thought I’d comment that on this video to save commenting twice. You’re reviewing a lot of my favourite cars recently, my aunty had a very early MK1 Yaris which she bought used. She had it for years and I thought it was fantastic. A big step up from the K11 Micra that she had previously. I think the MK1 Yaris is much better than the MK2 and 3 that came after it

Ah, Mr Manning! Glad you enjoyed it. The Yaris is not a bad car, I just found it not as good to drive as the Fiesta and not quite as likeable as the Rover 25. I definitely agree that the K11 Micra is not as good a car as this one, but then it was launched a fair while beforehand!

Love the Yaris. At launch I thought that it was small compared to the Starlet. However, time has shown them to be bulletproof. Apparently secondhand Yaris's are sought after. My cousin had a 10 year old 1 litre with 40,000 miles and a fellow took the boat over from England to give her the full £1800 pounds that she was asking. Nice colour.

It is really strange that these can fetch the sort of prices they do given their age, but they are pretty durable. I preferred the Fiesta over this, but it definitely is not a bad car at all.

I test drove one of these before deciding on the Celerio. For an 02 plate 1L it was a good little car for £600. I like the digital instruments better. They are designed to appear to be further away so you don’t have to refocus your eyes. And they worked very well. I seem to remember when the car came out in 99(?) the 1litre at 67hp was the most powerful of any make at the time. Now many 1 litres are double that.

Yes, the original Yaris was released in 1999. I have tried one with the digital instruments, and I didn't particularly like it. As with most things, you would get used to it, though. Definitely plenty of these available for under £1000. That is right, a mighty 67 bhp from the 1.0 litre engine, probably was the most powerful of its size at the time, although the insane Daihatsu Charade GTti from a few years before was more powerful with the same displacement.

I had a Mk1 Yaris, a 1.0 CDX 5 door T reg from April 1999 - one of the earliest you could get, and owned it between 2011 and 2016. It was my mother's car before I had it, and it replaced a 2002 Rover 45 IXS 1.8 Stepspeed which threw a rod through the block (my 3rd Rover 400 series by the way). The Yaris takes some getting used to with the central dash layout, but mine had the digital dash as opposed to the dials of the T sport. I found the car to be pretty slow and lacklustre compared to what I had been used to before, but if you are on a tight budget, these cars will do very good mpg - I regularly got between 50 and 58 mpg on a long run from my 1.0, and it had pretty low maintenence costs - however, the Mk1 is an old car now, the newest being on a 55 plate so 15 years old at least, and they can and do rust, and mine failed more than one MOT for corrosion to the rear sills, inner rear wheel arches and extensive corrosion of rear axle and suspension components after it got over 14 years old. The fuel filler pipe from the filler door flap to the tank rusts through and leaks, and the front sway bar eats bushes for breakfast. They are chain driven camshafts yes, but if oil changes have been neglected, cars of this sort of age are going to run rough and probably be on the verge of chain failure. If you can get one thats been well looked after and well maintained, then I'd say they make a good buy for someone wanting a cheap runabout, but to be honest, I would look for something newer like a Mk2 or Mk3 Yaris. I own a 2006 Mk2 1.3 T3 Yaris now, and have done since 2016, and its a nice car worth looking at, but even these have issues with corrosion of the rear underside and sills, and the gearboxes and clutches can be finicky on the gear change. Mk2 ones to avoid are the MMT semi auto - they are dire and very unreliable, but the auto box in the Mk1 was a conventional auto and easier to get on with. Yes, Mk1 Yaris are Toyotas, which are a generally reliable brand - but like everything else, they are only reliable at that sort of age (between 15 and 21 years old now) if they have been properly serviced - walk away from mk1 Yaris's with very noisy, tappety engines, and any that are rusty on the underside - they will cost more in repair than they are worth now.

Thanks ever so much indeed for watching! Yes, having had eight Rovers myself, three of which have been HH-Rs, I understand why you may have wanted to continue with the brand. April 1999 would make it a very early Yaris indeed. I have driven a Mark II Yaris with that engine and it was even slower. It also had the strange instrument layout, and you do get used to it after a while. You are right about keeping up with the maintenance, a timing chain is lubricated by the engine oil, so if you do not change that, then there is likely to be trouble. I have also seen them with chronic rust, but then virtually all cars of that age have rust issues, don't they? Values are very low at present, hence Hugh getting his T Sport for under £500, but numbers will start to decrease soon, I am sure, for the same reason. Would also love to cover the Mark II Yaris on the channel, of course!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yeah, thanks for that detailed response. I had quite a few cars over the years and always tended to go for larger engines, for example, I had 3 Mk2 Mondeos. consisting of a 1997 2.0 LX , and then 2.0 Ghia X, and then a 2.5 Ghia X - very nice cars the Mk2 Mondeo but hardly ever see them any more now. I had a 1997 R plate Rover 400 saloon in red, with the 1.6 K series and manual gearbox, but that was troubled with gearbox issues and I had to have the gearbox changed, but the engine was fine, really quick car for its engine size. Then I had a Y plate Rover 45 Impression in metallic blue, but only had wheel trims and no alloys, but had the Rover 75 seats, so very comfy. Got that at 70K miles, but within a month the head gasket blew, and I replaced it myself outside my house, used a MLS head gasket from Rimmer Bros at the time (2010 ish), and it was fine after that. Sold that Rover to my neighbour and I then got the 52 plate 45 IXS with the CVT Stepspeed box, which only had 46K on the clock, but that had issues with leaks from the inlet manifold gasket after a few months, so I replaced the gasket myself, and realised that the end bolt would not tighten up, as thread in head was damaged, and I used some chemical metal on the bolt to try to get it to seal tight enough, but sadly on a drive down the A50 near me in Stoke on Trent, there was an almighty bang, followed by loss of power, as the engine suffered catastrophic failure - left me stranded at night on A50. Turned out that the con rod had broken through the block, likely caused by water from the inlet manifold gasket getting into the end cylinder and hydro locking it, caused by my bodged repair, so entirely my own fault, but after that, I didnt want another 45, as I lost a fair bit of money on the IXS, as I had to scrap it in early 2011. Fortunately for me my mother sold me her 1999 Yaris, and she got a newer 2006 Yaris (the one I have now). I can safely say I did like the Rover 400 series a hell of a lot, they were great cars for the cheap prices you could get them for, they were comfy and had a good driving position, hence why I got through 3 of them, but I also liked the Mk2 Mondeo as well - especially the 2.5 V6 Auto - buy they were too thirsty in the end and I had to go with smaller engines, with petrol costing 6 quid a gallon and the Mondeo 2.5 only getting 18 to 20 mpg round town.

@@stevejones1972 , I actually have three reviews of HH-Rs on the channel, my 2003 Rover 45 V6, a 2000 low mileage Rover 45 1.4 iE and a 1998 Rover 416 SLi Automatic saloon. (Those are just the HH-R reviews, lots of other Rovers on the channel too...) The R65 gearbox which would have been in your 1997 400 is not my favourite... Sounds like you experienced a couple of common HH-R failures, such as the gearbox and the head gasket (I go on about head gaskets at length in every single video I make about 1990s and 2000s Rovers and MGs). Never heard of that problem with the inlet manifold gasket, although I have had to change the inlet manifold on my 45 V6, admittedly for a completely different reason. Sounds as if it didn't go well, which is a big shame. I would very much like to get a Mondeo on the channel, sounds as if you had some really lovely ones. I do like having a car with a V6 engine and an automatic gearbox, unless I come to a petrol station! Mine does do 29 mpg on average, but in town it's not very good. Thanks ever so much indeed again!

Interesting. I remember driving the Corolla T Sport and thinking the same. Yes it was quick but didn't feel as quick as the figures suggested. I always liked the Yaris though and like you was impressed at how Toyota managed to extract so much power from small units at the time yet still post such good economy figures. The tunnel speedo and the sliding rear seats were quite a revolution at the time too although it still feels odd looking at a steering wheel with no dials in front. Another fun review
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it should feel a bit faster, but it doesn't for some reason. I imagine that this is the way the engines are set up, principally for economy and not performance. I like the sliding rear seats, but not the instrument cluster, whether in conventional form (like this) or digital).

Your reviews however are absolutely wonderful for those of us who read Bangernomics years ago and would never pay much money on a car. Please keep going and your numbers viewers will grow. Cars that were highly rated when new, are not necessarily so good after the passage of years. I am thinking French cars particularly. Just one gripe, not many diesels!!!! I am glad you took my comment as a compliment as it was indeed meant. I did wonder later if it could be taken as a derogatory, which could not be further from the truth. I did see the Fabia tdi test(which is my car) and it was true to my experience. Perhaps you could also show a few more cars that you would not buy and why, with perhaps also looking at the OBD info as it is electrical as opposed to mechanical issues that kills most cars nowadays. Good luck in your venture.

@@69knobbly , yes, I did understand what you meant! Thought you had probably seen the Fabia video. We have had about three cars that I would definitely not buy on the channel, which are the Peugeot 207, Citroen C3 and the Fiat Stilo Multi Wagon. It does depend on what I get offered, though, and not many people tend to want to have their car absolutely trashed on camera. OBD issue is probably a subject for Mr Coleman (aka The Rubbish Mechanic)'s channel, as he knows far more about it than me! At the moment, rust and neglect still kills a lot of cars, but I see what you mean about the electronics in the future.

Did you take it over 3000rpm in this review, did I miss that bit? They’re a nippy little car, Toyota quoted 0-60mph in 8.7 secs 9.0 was the 0-62mph time. They accomplish this not via outright power but due to low weight and a very close ratio gearbox. I always remember in mine being able to surprise most 2.0L saloons of the time off the mark. But they would start to reel you in top end as the Yaris T Sport is only 105bhp....
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
I did take it over 3000 rpm, it just didn't seem as fast as I would have expected. Our old MG3 also had 105 bhp, and it has a much worse 0-60 mph time of 10.4 seconds, and so with the lighter weight I would have expected it to feel faster than that (the MG3 is also notorious for lacking power at the bottom end), but it really didn't. I drive a lot of cars on the channel, and it just left me a little bit disappointed as I was expecting a bit more performance without having to thrash it.
@theitalianjob1372
@theitalianjob1372 3 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting fair enough fella. If you drive one again make you you thrash the tits off it 😂 you’ll notice how close the gears are, 2nd and 3rd are really close the rpm barely drops at top end of 2nd gear changing into 3rd. I’ve only got a MG ZR 105 to compare one too and imo feel much faster and torquier low down the power band as the ZR seemed to have much longer gear ratios. Interesting about the MG3 though as my pal wanted one of those but didn’t even bother test driving one due to the figures released. Figures can be misleading sometimes. Suppose so can power delivery though too. Slow turbo diesels can feel impressively quick but in reality aren’t. I had a MR2 roadster what had a really flat power band and it felt slow, but it was surprisingly fast off the mark and will leave most 200bhp hatches to 50-60mph..... 👍🏻

@@theitalianjob1372 , yes, I drove an R3 214 Si on No Budget Reviews recently, and having owned a number of cars with the same 103 bhp 1.4 K Series engine, I was impressed how urgent and free revving it felt. The chassis is also very good. I did actually mention the MG ZR when I was driving! The engine is much more free revving than our old MG3 was, probably because peak torque in an MG3 is at something like 4000 rpm or more. The chassis is excellent, but you have to thrash it to get the decent performance as there is not much low down. I have 2014 and 2019 MG3 reviews on the channel, actually. Oh, we don't talk about diesels on this channel, so that is no problem!

I used to have an MG3, which I had sold a few months before this incredibly old review. Very similar engine, being a 1.5 four cylinder with variable valve timing and around 105 bhp, just like this one.
