Mental health includes conditions like PTSD, anxiety and depression and mental health claims remain as one of the most common disabilities claimed from the veteran community when submitting VA disability claims. Great video. I used to be that guy who would secretly judge those who were non-infantry. I realized that everyone's situation is different and that I should just worry about myself and support my fellow veterans in their quest to get the rating they deserve.

I keep my Va comp to myself. People get jealous to hear you get these benefits, especially family members. I used to get hate from other vets who thought they were more messed up, and did not think that I deserved what I got. I learned from that and I don’t share anything to do with Va comp. When other vets tell me that they are 100%, I tell them awesome, and leave it at that. Great topic.❤❤

Retired Coast Guard (AD 27 years). I know plenty of my Shipmates who have PTSD for a variety of reasons. Pulling dead bodies out of the water, flying 50 feet over the Ocean hundreds of miles from shore, boarding drug vessels, emergencies while flying missions (losing engines, fires onboard, major weather, etc., law enforcement missions, counter terrorism ops, security missions, and so on. For those who think you have to be in combat to have PTSD you are sorely mistaken. People can literally get PTSD over boot camp! I remember visiting Cape May Training Center (our boot camp) about 20 years after graduating. We watched the Company Commanders pick up their company and I swear all the enlisted folks had a bit of PTSD- remembering the first days of boot camp! Point is: You never know what triggers someone and what they have been through. Good video Clay.

The biggest problem we have is veterans pointing fingers at other veterans. Everyone's story is different and its not a competition nor are you taking away from another veteran by receiving disability. We all need to unite because we have bigger enemies out there trying to take away our benefits.

Air Force here. My career field touches a few different areas, Mortuary Affairs being one of them. It took me a lot of years to realize I was having some mental health struggles due to working in this field. Glad I eventually sought out some help to get answers. Outside of my wife and you all now, not many people know.

I’m born & raised in Philly- 300 murders plus a year. I’m also an Army Vet with non-combat deployments. I never understood how Veterans who deployed to combat looked down on other Veterans. As a kid in Philly, we were raised in a PTSD lifestyle. As an Army Veteran with non combat deployment, I’ve been on SRT, QRFs, Anti-Terrorism assignments, investigated the deaths of other service members & their families and even work on a JCST. I’ve been through it & seen some shyt that will weigh in your mental health and it’s all non combat related. Veterans need to support Veterans!

Thank you for covering this clay , I'm 10 years Navy Corpsman FMF 8404 , One thing that the instructors at hospital corps school tell you about is to have deliberate calm when treating the injured . As A Corpsman I learned this well what is not said is that Deliberate Calm will come back and haunt you . I have had to treat many injured Marines to many to count . When doing one man CPR on A injured person after the ventilation when this person breath out I could hear the death rales and see the life leave his body feel the life leave his body this and other things I had to do in the line of duty has given me PTSD . I will be going to my C&P for PTSD on July 2 2024 next week ! Now some 40 years later . My Psychologist has diagnosed me with PTSD I have been seeing him for 8 years now I hope to get the rating I deserve ! Thank you for all you do Sempr Fi Brother .

This is a perfect explanation of the phrase “you can’t see all wombs.” Every “soldier’s story” is a unique experience. I served, my grandfather served, my father in law served, my two brothers served and my son too. We all served active duty and all can tell you stories for days. The fact that we are still here to tell it is a blessing within itself because most of us unfortunately did experienced death in one form or another during our military experience. yup, my first deployment, i was single, no kids, shit was crazy but “tolerable”…. second deployment, was married with 2 kids, theater wasn’t as bad but mentally it was a burden and also experienced not connecting to my girls when i came back home

Thank you for making this video. I didnt get to deploy. I was given orders that ruined my body before I could go anywhere other than an exercise on okinawa. It sucks feeling like I shoulda done more, been in longer. Videos like this give me hope that someone will understand... You cant see my injuries, the spine is jacked up. I can walk short distances without a cane but I prefer to use it more often than not, helps with pain. Got a brace now for foot drop, that luckily hides well enough under my pants if I wear them instead of shorts. You wouldn't know how bad my body hurts by how it looks... You wouldn't understand how it affects my mental every day... I get to see people of all ages and sizes doing things I'll never do again, like running or sports in general, heavy lifting. I can lift 20lbs... but I have to worry about someone saying something rude? Its ridiculous...

During C&P exam they don’t ask you about deployment and I’m deployed to many times too no access to the phone and internet just old school writing or maybe email but it get block sometimes.Deployed during in support in Enduring freedom and Iraqi freedom but I got deployed before and after that. Missed my kids births.

I have a friend and shipmate kill themself while we were stationed overseas. We weren't in any sort of combat situation, and looking back at it, he displayed multiple signs of the potential to hurt himself. He left a 20-page note detailing what drove him to it. Nobody knows what is going through another person's mind or their life. To judge someone without knowing is just plain ignorant. Yes, there are Veterans who have and are gaming the system, but I believe they are few and far between, and every Vet deserves the help they need, and compensation for what they rate.

I have no oversea deployments but plenty of conus ones. Being away from my son and just doing things that no one else would ever do or even think of is life changing. Maybe we were not shot at but at the end of the day we all served and that says a lot. Things can affect anyone at anytime but for us we know how much time away from family we’ve endured and events we have missed. There are also other things that could happen, think about sexual assaults, or injuries during training. It happens guys just leave them alone and worry about you. If you want to complain, complain about the billions that our government sends out to foreign countries.

I used to do crossfit back in the days and while in Kuwait, had surgery and recovery was horrible. before this I was team motivator hey, you have nothing else to do while on deployment except work and work out. After the surgery, they had me on all sorts of drugs, feeling like a loser because now I am that guy on profile. you know that stereo type peeps on profile trying to get out of doing pt. Needless to say, for a long time, going to gym was depressive because I was not able to do those things in the gym like I used to. It was pain. Now, I focus on getting to the gym and just doing the basics of working muscle group with an exercise that does not hurt my body. this has helped me with mindset and attempting to build the muscle. I still have issues, but something is better than nothing.

This situation always reminds me of an old joke from the Balkans (although it applies to most people) Nikolay was a poor farmer just barely surviving in a run-down house with an ugly wife. Well said. I always considered anyone who served honorably a brother. I got out in 76 and never deployed oconus. That being said I was an SP/LE. like any cop you are always one incident away from PTSD, injury or death. You do not have to be in a war zone thousands of miles from home to experience the worst and the best of human beings. I would after 911 work a contractor for the DOA. It's all fubar. We were/ are brothers, part of a team, a mission. Let's help each other carry the load not burden them.

I have a mental health C AND P on Friday. I think it will likely get service connected. I was in the US Air Force and just worked on technology, no combat. However I feel the technology I worked on played a HUGE role in assisting the militaries global force. It wasn't running around with a gun all the time , but it takes technology to win battles. I was obsessed with jiu jitsu and used to help marines and even navy seals with their grappling. I ended up injuring my cervical spine during one of these sessions, which is now service connected. I am filing anxiety secondary to this cervical spine injury because its destroying my current engineering career. My service was just as good as anyone else's. It takes a lot to have a successful military force including advanced technologies. And in reality, the guys who can build advanced technologies -- are they less valuable than the guy who can run around with a gun? Not if you want to actually win wars.

MOS doesn’t matter, especially in secondary claims. I will say you want to prepare yourself for a denial and if that’s the case, I’d recommend IMO/DBQ especially for MH secondary to musculoskeletal. Also, I just started BJJ and boxing. It hurts, a lot. But I feel great after each session mentally. - Clay

Hey man quick question -- I don't have an IMO but I have pretty much a direct medical opinion from two doctors I did not ask for. I found in my medical records two MDs that wrote something to the effect of "Patient appears to be suffering from severe depression and anxiety from his cervical spine issues (service connected)". I did not ask them at ALL for these medical opinions they just wrote them in my records. Does this count the same as an IMO? Even if its not an "official" medical opinion on a VA form?

One of the biggest issues I have with the VA is their definition of combat. If your deployment wasn’t during a time of a congressional declared war, you don’t get recognized as a combat deployment. I deployed on a classified operation & experienced a hostile fire event yet my rating specifically states a non combative situation

The VA definition of combat veteran is extremely broad. If you've ever received imminent danger/hostile fire pay or have one of several dozen medals that were handed out like candy when I was AD then the VA considers you a combat veteran.

@@rogersmith7808 yes, in a canned situation where Congress authorizes the President to deploy troops to a hostile area, all that is achieved and the VA recognizes the combat tour. I’m talking about a classified deployment where Congress didn’t authorize. Nothing is entered in your record book, you sign an NDA, no hazardous duty pay, no CAR or any medals can be awarded. VA has two types of PTSD. One is a result of combat which is easier to get SC and the other is a result of non-combat which is harder to be SC for.

I have a medical record that states my mucous membrane was severely damaged due to cleaning a barracks cement floor in Bermuda with bleach and ammonia. Since then I can't smell or taste food or anything else for that fact. Im looking at doing a claim for the loss, it's only 10% but that puts me at 50%. Do I need a doctors repost or a Nexus letter on it?

You need to look at the rating schedule for mental. I may be wrong, but you prolly have symptoms from the 70% rating. You're tearing up at the thought of what happened. I have to assume you have flashbacks, and survivors guilt, maybe even some suicidal ideation. If you're comfortable with where you're at, leave it alone. but you owe it to yourself to understand why they rate the way they do and figure out what you didn't say that you should have, which would have fallen under 70%. Im not saying lie, but if you dont even know what 70% = based on symptoms, you cant be sure you're rated properly.

As prior service, a bunch of us at AIT where housed in separate buildings than the noobies. A guy in his thirties started talking about leaving and going back to his wife. He being prior service, he knew what would happen if he did. Those of us around him spent two weeks trying to get him to not go AWOL. But he chose to leave. None of us understood why. Yet at the same time, we knew we weren't him. No body bashed him, ridiculed him. All of us were older and realized his situation had more moving parts than we could have imagined. Normally, in the Army, we all eat our own so to speak. But once in a while we get it right.

I just say I'm retired (I am) and leave the 100% thing to me, myself & I. As to combat PTSD vs non-combat... In the middle east, I did 3 months Kuwait, 7 in A-stan, 13 Iraq. Not an infantry guy, but was on 2 Advisor teams--so I definitely lived 'every Marine's a Rifleman...' at times with the added blessing (sarcasm) of being on combined patrols/missions with our 'partnered forces' ... (If you know.... you know 😉. I gotta say, I had some high stress/pressure billets, a-hole bosses, and massive amounts of stress and high viz responsibility stateside, in garrison, as well, that is no joke. I definitely can see, and have lived, situations where someone is in a high stress billet with a douche-bag, micro-manager, insecure prick from Hell, can be it's own PTSD. If you add some legit (not BS where someone is trying to get over) away from work issues, the MC, at least back in the day, was abso-f-ing-lutely not a caring kind of place, lol.

The rate of someone else is none of your business period. Everyone is responsible for submitting real evidence and the VA is responsible for rating it. If you didn’t get rate correctly you should actually question your evidence and your abilities to articulate when you write a statement in support.

My unit used to Stage our teams out of Okinawa at Camp Shields. Used to hit Schwab, and Foster to visit my Corp buddies 🇺🇸 Kadena was by far the best base world wide besides Diego Garcia before the Gulf War staging and comms base 🇺🇸 Thanks for bringing back those great memories my friend ❤ 🐸

Okinawa was my first duty station with the Navy. With a squadron at Kadena for 2 years 76 and 77. Retired in 95.

LHA-1 Tarawa back in the 1980's Pacific Service. Where I learned wall walking. My PTSD was as an NCO I could have saved 3 Marines lives in a training accident (in Okinawa) where the OIC didn't perform his job by inspecting the weapon. There was still one round left in the rifle that if I had done the post training inspection would have made the difference while the LT was getting a pep talk from the other officers in the command ("IT'S CHEAPER TO REPLACE A DITCH DIGGER THAN SOMEONE WITH A DEGREE"). THAT CHAPPED MY HIDE that the officers could even make such a statement. Yes, I know we said things like Jody Calls and Kill a Commy for Mommy, but those Marines were going home in a box to their families.

All thse service members and vets out there minding other people business are the same ones compaint that they are not rated correct and having 3 combat deployments, got blown up and inly received 20%. If thats you, stpol being nosey and comparing our rating and go out and get your own evidence
