I think the man either had a health problem or more of an infection, the dog chewed it off in the mans sleep as he could not feel his foot due to the infection/problem. 24 hours Greggs is indeed a thing in Newcastle. The one opposite the train station is 24 hours and has a bouncer at the weekends which is pretty sad. As someone who would do 11pm shifts at one of the hotels near by and then be back at 6:45 the next morning that Greggs was my saviour.

Hi, that cake you asked about looks like a version of a classic Australian dessert called Lamingtons but with strawberry jam instead of chocolate (a decently common version of the same thing) and with only the top face coated (usually the pieces are the same size but coated on all sides in the chocolate or jam and then shredded coconut).
