No Engine Start after Rebuild - What Now ? / S4-Ep45

In this episode, we narrow down why the engine of our 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 2.7L does not start after a full engine and vehicle rebuild and restoration. Christian applies all his debug skills and wisdom. Check out if we get it to run. Hope you enjoy the Video.
Technical data:
Trigger wheel and sensor install of 2.7L TDV6 and 3.0L SDV6 engine:
Offset of trigger wheel from dowel location to trigger wheel hole is 110.5° CW when viewed in driving direction from back side of engine.
Insertion dept of the trigger wheel is 3.66 mm +-0.4 mm with max axial TIR of 0.4 mm, measured from the shoulder of the crank to the trigger wheel.
The sensor gap is 0.4 mm to 1.5 mm max.
The trigger wheel delivers 60 - 2 tooth pattern. The missing theeth represent 12° of crankshaft rotation. The reference point is 21° BTDC.
See our Patreon Page for a screen shot of the correct shape of the trigger wheel signal.
Note that the crankshaft sensor uses a 5V supply and ground and provides a output signal connected to a 4.7 k Ohm pull up resistor inside the ECU. If measured in a test setup without the pull up resistor, the output voltage is less and looks wrong. Install a 4.7K Ohm resistor to see the correct output.
Connect the scope to the wiring harness above the LH ECR Valve to get the crankshaft sensor signal:
Ground = Brown with red tracer
Signal = White with red tracer
+5V = Yellow with red tracer
Note that some color combinations are present multiple times in the harness.
ECU will only trigger a fault once the engine starts. No-start no-fault. Engine must also read the cam shaft sensor and will take one crankshaft revolution to sync. If no cam shaft signal is present or faulty, engine will remain in limp mode with reduced power and fault will be logged by the ECU.
Part number of trigger wheel: LR005254 (Price at LR in 10-2023 was 156 Euro)

I have to agree ! I have urged my son to start watching Christian and how he goes about solving problems , using time tested diagnosis methods and using test equipment - meters / oscilloscopes etc - A good many JLR and Ford Dealers can learn a thing or two from prescribing a weekly compulsory viewing for their “ technicians “ - and as final comment , I haven’t heard that quaint term buggered used when referring to defective mechanical parts since watching my late dad work on his triumph 2000 😂

Very well done on solving the starting issue with methodical analysis. It illustrated that just as with mechanical components that need to be aligned correctly to avoid issues, so too do electronic signals have to be in a "straight line" It shows how little tolerances need to be out-either with a poor quality part, or the tool setting it up- for big problems to arise! Thanks too for the film of the parade, for someone who is rural and around farming it was very interesting to see all the old tractors especially.

OMG. I am so glad you got it running again. When I had my body off and replaced my engine a few people said with all that access you should change the trigger wheel but I am so glad I didn't. It was one tool I didn't have and the existing one on the engine worked so I left it. I don't have the skills or a lathe that you guys do and I am so glad I left it in place. Good to see it driving off the ramps I just hope the injector faults don't return or that the clutch gives you any issues. Maybe a good bleed of all systems and it will all settle down 🙏👍 after mine I had a leak off pipe dripping just as I was about to go for the MOT and also a turbo actuator sticking which I lubricated with your method using the camera it now all works fine. Looking forward to next week already. Great street party too😁
