I heard about the Dark Star back in 2014. The speed is much greater than Mach 6. It can fly from LA to NYC in 20 minutes at top speed. Yes thats Mach 12. It can hit and be gone. It travels so fast it can evade all missles.. Russia is making an attempt to counter with their S-550, but the Dark star is probably 8 to years ahead in technology. Go USA.. :)

OMG, the SR-71 was never a fighter craft, it was surveillance. And a variable jet motor is not going to go from jet-turbine to rocket, it would go to RAMjet or SCRAMjet. You lose all credibility on what is really truth, when you don't even know how to describe a bullet cartridge- for example. Sounds like a California lawmaker trying to describe a rifle by how many clips it can fire per second, via upgraded caliber.

The Lockheed Martin SR-72, colloquially referred to as "Son of Blackbird", is an American hypersonic UAV concept intended for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) proposed privately in 2013 by Lockheed Martin as a successor to the retired Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. The company expected an SR-72 test vehicle could fly by 2025...

It has been known that since “Star Wars” tech came out that laser beams can be defeated by reflective coatings. How does this laser work against coatings that reflect the infrared frequency of this laser?
@proteusnz99
@proteusnz99 Жыл бұрын
Another question is how is the laser powered? The most powerful disclosed airborne laser was chemically based and needed the volume of a 747 to lift the equipment. As a weapon in a fighter? Leave that to the X-wings in Star Wars. You could in theory use an extremely compressed pulse to deliver all the energy in an extremely short time period (microsecond or less) but that will scorch the paint in a small area, perhaps make a small hole, but unlikely to knock out a modern jet, short of a golden bb hit. There is also the issue of thermal bloom, in atmosphere a lot of the energy from a high power laser will convert intervening gas to plasma, attenuating the beam.

I think that's about 3000 totally unbelievably unbeatable warplanes that have appeared online in recent years. Strangely, they are all still secret and do not even appear at airshows. Perhaps they are so fast and stealthy that they disappear up their own tailpipes. They are also insulting those who built planes like the SR71 by suggesting they only discovered how much they heated up or the difficulties of balancing partial pressures for oxygen delivery at altitude AFTER they were flying.

Aren't there already Hyper-sonic Missiles..? as well as Lasers that could be mounted to a 'Drone' type missile..? How far does a Laser beam remain DANGEROUS or even DEADLY?? Particularly if it misses the target, or after it has cut thru the target....
@MatthewBaileyBeAfraid
@MatthewBaileyBeAfraid Жыл бұрын
A Laser Beam today remains “deadly” to an Unarmored/unprotected Target for quite a ways. Especially if it is Pulsed. BUT… They are useless now as such weapons thanks to the discovery of a Scaleable Manufacturing process for Hardened Aerogels in 2018. A fraction of a mm of Hardened Aerogel is enough to protect something from any conceivable Laser Weapon we could build for decades to Centuries. It wasn’t expected that Hardened Aerogels would ever be manufacturable… Until some kid in a University Lab discovered a process around 2016, and showed that it worked in 2018. The USA, China, Russia, France, Germany (Everyone with a High-Energy Laser Weapons Program) just kind of quietly wrapped them up, knowing that what they had was basically the equivalent of the IJN’s Yamato Battleships in 1940: Something enormously powerful that was a Waste of Money due to it being so vulnerable to the Aircraft Carrier. And to make matters even worse for the HEL Weapons… The Hardened Aerogel is just the most recent thing to make them useless as weapons. Another Technology is being developed that will make any POSSIBLE Laser useless as a weapon, no matter how much “power” it has (typically measured in Megajoules, Gigajoules, Terajoules, etc.)… And there are all manner of Hypersonic Missiles. One that I am pretty sure we have is called “Rods-from-God.” Look into it… Pretty simple stuff for being the equivalent of a Nuclear Weapon that has no explosives of any kind.

SR-71 was not the worlds fighter jet because it was not a fighter, it was a recon jet. And the jets colliding with their own missles is BS. Take a physics class. A popular idea but not strong reality support, SR71 and any SR72 are reconnaissance aircraft although some thought was given to an armed version of the SR71. If the aircraft exists and if it is for actual engagement with the enemy it is far more likely to be a strike aircraft not an air superiority fighter. It’s actually too fast for that, you mentioned this yourself, that lasers were chosen not missiles as it could run into its own missiles.

earlier today i had an idea but since i am not an engineer or anything like that... i'm a sci fi geek and a dreamer mostly. but anyhow ... i was thinking about the issues of having stealth aircraft with missile bays and how when they are opened that it compromises their stealth. how about a rear facing torpedo tube sort of system? i mean you put the weapon into the tube and back it up ... when you wish to launch it, you basically open up flaps on the weapons tail that drag it out of the tube... or you could use venting or pressure systems to push it out... thou i do like the flap idea most... probably used in conjunction with one of the others... anyhow the weapon would need a means of ignoring the launching craft after being released as to not target it when its propulsion engages... would that be a good means of launching a weapon instead of just opening a bay to release them? you'll still need bay doors for loading, but i can imagine them being in a rotary magazine, similar to one that can be carried with b-52's or "other" bombers... which could be pre loaded and waiting for exchange with an aircraft that needs re-arming far faster than loading them each manually within a bay. course this would mean to have either an adjustable launch "torpedo" bay diameter... to accomodate weapons of different sizes... or mean a standardization or add ons to use smaller ones in a larger launch tube... in my head i think "similar to sabot"??... idk if the bay itself could just adjust.. more complicated but in the end it would allow more to be carried right? eh... anyhow that is the idea that popped into my head earlier so felt i shoudl share.. peace.

"SR" means Strategic Reconnaissance, not a fighter/bomber type plane. The "A-12" variant was supposed to be the attack plane, but never put into service. 7200 miles per hour is much faster than I previously heard of. The X-15 was a rocket plane for testing, not any kind of military or commercial aircraft.

A-12 was the single seat variant, precursor of SR-71, operated by CIA rather than USAF, believe about 8-10 built, carried out missions over North VietNam in late 1960s. There was an interceptor variant, YF-12A 2 seater using weapons system from XF-108 (radar / missiles) that eventually wound up in the F-14. There was a paper project for a strike SR-71B with weapon bays from SRAMs replacing the reconnaissance gear, but that never got beyond design studies.

That “most powerful Laser in Existence” is totally dead weight, making the aircraft “unarmed” if so. Unless it is fighting non-military targets. But in 2018, the utility of “Laser Weapons” came to a crashing end faster than did the end of the Battleship with the arrival of the carrier. A technological development that had not been expected for a LONG WHILE was made, creating something that is now accelerating not just re-usable heat-shield development for Spacecraft, but is also a nigh impenetrable armor against lasers for a mere fraction of a mm of material: Hardened Aerogels. The “Hardened” simply means that it doesn’t crumble to dust so easily like normal aerogels. But like regular aerogels, it is capable of withstanding enormous temperatures. And it became a “Thing” in 2018, and not just a “thing,” but the creator had a scalable manufacturing process. It was this development that is why the US Military (and Russian, Chinese, Japanese, French, Germans, English, etc… Everyone working on High-Powered Laser Weapons) suddenly became very disinterested in those weapons, and the existing programs were effectively wrapped-up, since, just like all of the Battleships built just prior to WWII, they were essentially a legacy weapon that had no real use in War, and were too expensive to use for things like Piracy Interdiction. So… Your “Sooper-Seekret-airplane” here with a “Lazer-beemz” (spellings intentional) is unarmed, and carrying dead weight it would be better-off without. Because pretty much everything is now made with critical component that have a small layer of hardened aerogel on them (something you could not even tell was a hardened Aerogel unless you knew it before hand). And in the next few years the entire military will be retrofitting the hardened aerogels into the normal armor and weapon construction process since it is negligible in weight and volume (as I mentioned, something like 0.1mm to 0.25mm is sufficient to protect pretty much anything from any laser anyone could build for the next several decades - and by then the next technology that will do vastly more than rendering any POSSIBLE Laser, be it an X-Ray or Gamma-Ray Laser of Trillions of Joules energy or any other Laser that could conceivably be built, entirely useless. That technology is Hyper-Reflecting/Refracting Metamaterials). And the Hyper-Reflective/Refractive Metamaterials are things that do not depend upon traditional optics to work. The types and arrangement of atoms in their substrate causes interference with any photons, or any energy (i.e. Electromagnetic Energy of ANY kind), to be unable to “touch” or be absorbed by the Atoms/Molecules of the Metamaterial. That then causes the photons bounce off the atoms until they are passed through the material and out in another direction (programmed via the construction or manipulation of the Metamaterial), or simply “bounce off” the Metamaterial entirely (Refracting or Reflecting with an Indices of Refraction asymptotic to a Limit͢͢ ±∞ and an Index of Reflection equivalent to that of Refraction(Asymptotic to a Limit͢͢͢͢ ∞). Kind of hard for a Laser to damage something that it cannot “Touch.” The Metamaterials also have another property that is going to mess up a LOT MORE than just Laser Weapons. They are invisible (or can be made invisible) to any kind of EM based Detection we currently use (Vision, Radar, LiDAR, etc). Sonar would still work, but there is a possibility that the Metamaterials could be created to function the same way with sound. Leaving few options to detect them. Dirt on them might be detected visually, but it, nor “scratches” damage or affect the Metamaterials in any way, because their properties aren’t derived from the traditional “Optics” of Lenses or Mirrors. Mass remains the only real way to detect them, and currently Mass Interferometers tend to be many square miles in size. And they are only capable of detecting mass along the plane they are built on. Very scary “plane” you’ve got there as a result.

Mach 9 and highly manoeuvrable? Get real, at that speed it will travel in straight lines and turn slowly, otherwise the g-force will flatten the pilot. Also, where is the fuel, it’s smaller than the SR-71. As far as I know Dark Star was the program name for a small forward swept drone, cancelled in the late 1990s. The white aircraft about midway is clearly the recently rolled out X-59 QUESST proof of concept vehicle. The generally breathless presentation is reminiscent of the AWST articles about Soviet nuclear powered bombers in the late 50s/early 60s, cheer leading for biggest Air Force budgets. More likely a cleverly managed misdirection exercise, with the movie tie-in to ‘explain’ Skunk Works activity, a bunch who’d long been good at keeping secrets. In terms of reconnaissance satellites or drones make more sense. I’d be more interested in seeing if Lockheed was collaborating with DARPA and the AI community to develop drone swarms with autonomous capabilities.

Seen as how the US already has the Harrier, it is beyond just a copy.
@proteusnz99

No, the F-35 is not a copy of the BA Harrier, that had a single engine with vectored thrust, the Pegasus. The F-35 is conceptually closer to the Soviet Yak-38, but replacing the forward lift jets with a large fan. Looking at it, I was reminded of the comment of an Israeli pilot evaluating the F-14, after walking around it and counting all the moving bits he decided he’d prefer to go into combat is something a bit simpler. The F-35 is undoubtedly ingenious in packaging VTOL, stealth into one smallish airframe, but resistant to battle-damage? It’s a bit expensive to be regarded as expendable.

It wasn't revealed. Everything in Top Gun was CGI. The takeoff at the beginning was an overlay onto a Hornet if I remember correctly.

A fun video. A lot of CGI from the movies and an interview of Richard Dewar who is the Manager of Next Generation Technologies for BAE Systems taken back in 2020 about the Tempest project. I bet the Skunk works were as surprised as everyone else at this video.

Can I be honest, there is no way you can drop or fire anything with such a platform. I totally agree it would have too be high energy weapons. Were nowhere near this, close but not yet.

It still has to avoid missile defence systems especially air to air. if a missile is coming straight at your nose your 7500 mph works against you.

ONLY cartoons from movies of hollyweird jets; how did the one on the flight line get there, without ANYONE taking a video of it. CGI is great for the lame.

Carrying a 350Kw laser? The engines would have to have waste alot of energy ALL the time or there are going to be ramp speed issues. OR the super capacitor to hold that energy for use is going to be big, too. As for super maneuverable... There are physical limits to breaking or moving a hypersonic air cone that is right on the skin of your craft. The redirection is going to take miles because of the "bite" of the control surfaces or propellant necessary to change direction (to change pointing direction and then to apply the vector thrust to get it arc into the new path) is going to small because Newton's first and third laws are not going to be happy. So the engines of this beast would have to generate enough force to accelerate it and it has to be very light to keep M low to allow a high A or a huge F that requires energy and either very short flights. There is no free ride in F=MA and then add air resistance. AND you want to fire a 350Kw laser more than once a day. Sure. Can't wait to see it one day, but they can't be using aviation fuel.

Make sure if you create a jet that it has the ability to have hypersonic Nuclear missiles. Hypersonic flight. With the most powerful lasers available. Mandatory All 3. There's no sense in having to say we should of. Just get it done, please thank you. God bless.

Make it into a star fighter and you'll remove the G-forces that affects the pilot and all the pilot to do is slow descend back to Earth. But the poor pilot has to suffer the pressures until reaching space.
