***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Tuesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

@Living Traditions Homestead The first thing that poped into my mind re: high nitrogen for the corn is to isolate the drip irrigation from the corn and use a high nitrogen liquid fertilizer.
@ThatCompostGuy

I find the scoops are too close together for corn and tape them on the back side with clear scotch tape so every other scoop picks up a seed. Also, if you lean it to the right, the side the disc is on, you can walk beside the row instead of having to straddle it while using it. Makes it easier to walk without wobbling awkwardly. Also makes it easier for seed in the bottom of the hopper to fall into the scoops as they come along.

Good morning! I love growing sweet corn. I love growing corn, period..lol IF you are interested. When your corn gets about 2 feet tall, then sow a cow pea next to each one ( 4 inches-ish). I highly recommend one that vines, such as the Hercules. This will do a couple of things for you. It will be a constant supply of nitrogen for your corn- YAY...and it will vine up your corn stalks to help anchor them in the weather- ya again. It will shade the roots of your corn- so no weeds...and then..If you eat them you will have easy access, and it you don't your -Hope will be one happy girl :) Happy growing!

@@StarOnTheWater Yip, the US natives used to grow beans WITH the corn and squash. Peas do the same thing as beans, but peas are NO way very productive for harvest like the beans. So if you just want nitrogen, pick either beans or peas, but if you would like a complimentary crop? Use beans, it is way more productive, and still gives nitrogen. Corn likes lower ph And sandy rich soil that has GENEROUS compost. Corn will starve the soil if not composted.

@@herbbearingseed - It all depends on the variety of peas, that you plant. We grow the southern cow pea( which will grow just about anywhere- I have grown them in Alaska :) ) and they produce more than we could ever use.! It's all difference in tastes. All good! :)

Never have weeds if you use my father's system for a weedless garden. "Son," he said, "weeds are like sins. If you hoe them before you can see them you will never have weeds." What he did was skimmed the surface of the soil (hoe, tiller, stirrup hoe, etc.) as soon as he could after every watering. You occasionally have to pull a weed or two next to a plant, but not often. God Bless!

I’ve tried growing sweet corn. Not a success. Because I work outside the home, I support local farmers as much as I can. Here’s the age old question about corn....how do you know when to harvest corn? The day before the raccoons get it.

try a variety trinity it is bi-color 70day to maturity when the silk is completely dry and the cobs feel firm to touch hope this helps
@richardbutler5893
@richardbutler5893 4 жыл бұрын
Here in upstate New York, the raccoons tend to get into the sweet corn before it’s ripe enough for the way people like theirs. Fencing is the only way to be sure that the raccoons don’t eat any. The way I tell that the corn is ready to pick is by feeling the shape of the top of the ear just below the silk. If that part of the ear feels slender it’s not ready. When that area begins to feel fuller then the corn is ready. When it feels real plump it’s a bit over mature for the way we enjoy it. You can test this out by feeling of the ears that you buy from the market. You will find out out how those feel before you husk them and that will help you figure out how the corn you grow should feel for the way you like it best.

i can hardly wait to see those water melon get big enough to take off the vines. I can just see the big smile on Kevins face. What I like better is to see his face when he picks a ripe tomato. The only thing I know to do with watermelon besides eating it cold right out of the fridge, is to make preserves. Have you ever made preserves from part of the rind? They are a great southern treat. When I was a child we ate anything that could be made sweet.

Excited about you growing sweet corn this year. Hope it’s a great crop for you. Just my opinion but thought I would share. I have found over the years that freezing corn seems to obtain that fresh sweet corn flavor so much better than canning it.. for some reason the canning process changes the flavor...it’s not a bad flavor and it’s good for making soups and stews and such, but if you want that fresh from the garden taste, we find freezing corn either whole kernel, creamed, or on the cob is sooooo much better... just my take on this subject as we’ve been gardening for many yrs... also if two kernels fall together when planting, you don’t have to thin. I’ve been planting peaches and cream for yrs by hand dropping 2-3 kernals about every 10 inches and it does wonderful... happy gardening guys, love your channel and all that you share with us.❤️❤️

We only have our patio to plant a garden in. We have a raised 4'x8' bed, 6 bucket/bags and a strip of 18" ground across the front of our patio. We have 2 Loquat trees (one in a large pot and one in the ground. Will probably be a few years before blossoms that will produce fruit, but we are using the leaves for tea, in the meantime. A mandarin orange tree in the ground and a lemon tree in a large pot. We have one large pot left and plan to plant our ginger in it. We have 4 red tomatoes and 2 brown tomatoes in pots/bags/ground. We have 2 8' tall egg plants that wintered over, 1 4' pepper poblano that wintered over and planted 2 red wonder peppers this year. The yellow wonder pepper plant we have is in its 3rd year...hope it lasts even longer. Walking onions, chives, chard, thyme and green beans that have volunteered and some we planted this year. We plan to plant Chinese cabbage and leaf lettuce this fall. Cucumbers and Chayote squash, plus basil are planted in the 18" strip across the front of the patio. A few radish seeds were just broadcasted into the area under the eggplants and peppers. Doesn't sound like much, but is because of the limited space we have to plant in. We could use more ground....may we plant in yours....lol Good luck with this years gardens to you both. Fingers crossed for ours. John is 92 and I will soon be 78....but we just keep on gardening. P.S. We do a lot of our planting from seeds we saved from the previous years crops. We are going to save some corn seed from Sugar & Cream corn we purchased to eat. Keeping our fingers crossed it works.

I wish we could get those Strawberry watermelons here. The stores around here don't even offer the option of getting the old fashioned seeded watermelons and I think they are absolutely the sweetest and tastiest kind. The seedless variety sold in the stores is practically tasteless in comparison. Every year the Smithsonian Institution has a Folklife Festival on the National Mall and they always arrange for watermelon vendors to be there. They sell wedges of the old fashioned seeded watermelons and they're absolutely fantastic. I used to work as a volunteer at the festival and I remember having to teach little kids how to spit watermelon seeds. (They'd never seen seeds in a watermelon before and didn't know what to do with them. I told them that this kind of watermelon came with its own toy inside!) I don't imagine that there'll be a festival this year because of the virus and I'm really going to miss that watermelon!

The seeder is the best invention ever. Growing up on our organic farm/homestead, we used on of those seeders (not sure the brand name we used) but it was a life changer. Makes planting everything by seed so much easier and it is a lot less painful on your back! We raised rabbits, chickens, turkeys, pigs and had Guernsey dairy cows. Made our own butter, cheese, ice cream and canned 10 acres of veggies every year. Sold extras at the local farmers market 3 days a week. Didn't really appreciate that life till I got older, but glad that I grew up that way.

OOOOOH Peaches and Cream corn!!! I discovered this type about 8 yrs. ago, in Wyoming, and I was hooked for life. I'm truly spoiled for any other kind, now. Folks out there, if you can find this type and haven't tried it before, I URGE you to try it. It's what I remember corn tasting like when I was a girl. What a treat. Gotta stop now, cause I could go on and on. Blessings all.

It'll be interesting to see how this works. The biggest drawbacks I've seen to using any kind of landscaping cloth that stays down for multiple years is how to amend the soil.

@Marga Me too. I am alternating my plastic with my garden rotations. Anywhere the plastic isn't is heavily mulched with grass clippings or leaf molds from compost piles. There are a few more weeds but your feeding the garden all summer. I also do not run the plastic solid...if that makes sense. I leave a 18 inch pathway between plastic rows and mulch that out. I figure the soil gets some nutrients that way. I think of myself as a hybrid gardner, mixing old techniques with the new if I can. Some plants like potatoes, beets, and green beans grow fast and to me plastic doesn't make sense for them anyway, so it offers a chance to amend soil like you were thinking.
