No heat caused by pressure switches doing the job there designed for. I take the simple steps of elimination approach. The first Carrier furnace has the heat exchanger that eventually will delaminate and fail. You have to keep a close eye on those. The second furnace is a Comfortmaker and that's another Carrier product line.

New subscriber. I remember when flame sensors were becoming the norm. Every manufacturer had instructions in the service manual how to clean the flame sensor. Carrier specifically mentioned steel wool but other manufacturers said steel wool, a scotch brite scouring pad, fine grit sand paper or plumbing cloth, or a stainless steel brush was ok to clean the flame sensor. I always clean first unless the rod is warped, ceramic is cracked, or somebody cleaned it and gouged deep grooves in the rod so now it gets fouled much quicker

I hear your frustration with the lack of information about the pressure switches. I worked with the Trane product, they printed the switch operating pressure on the label which, while that info was helpful, it isn’t the whole story. The PS data I often found most helpful was the closing pressure, in other words, how deep a negative did the draft inducer have to pull to close the switch. For example, one unit I remember had an operating pressure of 0.88” w.c. on the label. Trane said you had +/- .04” leeway either side. Yet, that same unit needed -1.25” w.c.negative to close the switch. Trane didn’t publish the closing pressure in the furnace data, you’d have to ask a field rep for it. As a field rep for Trane Canada, I made sure our dealers had a list of closing pressures for individual units. Nice work cleaning up this installation.

If I called the supplier they can look it up for me, generally it'll be somewhere in that ballpark and all the new ones have them listed. I know what you're saying far is closing versus opening, I've always noticed it to be the pressure that it closes I believe. But I couldn't be wrong. Generally I've always noticed it runs about one and a half times whatever it's rated at if it's vented and working properly. Thanks for checking it out and leaving a comment 👍👍

We run those same furnaces in a bunch of our rentals, and commonly get this code 31 on no heat, 99.9% of the time resulted in the port on the inducer going into the pressure switch being clogged. Our HVAC vendor informed us that if one seems to becoming more problematic it's starting to have heat exchanger issues.

I would have to agree with them, I had it happen every year on one residential and change the heat exchanger and it quit. Of course that only means until it just starts doing it again with the new one 😁

@@HVACRSurvival it kinda does but over here they like to separate things and put everything in a specific box . So if the heating comes from an RTU that'll be for the hvac guy , but if it's purely heating like a boiler then it'll be the heating engineer's job , not the hvac guy . On the other hand some companies will have you do a lot of different things but usually when it comes to gas heating , burners and stuff , that would be the heating engineers. Usually anyway .

Your first Carrier you were working on... Did you get a lot of junk out of the drain trap when you washed it out..if you did wash it out. The tube from the secondary on the bottom left also shows signs of debris that will plug up the drainage. Carriers have been known the have poor silicone usage in their secondary heat exchanger that will plug up the drain. By the time you get to the customers house sometimes the unit has drained enough and is working on arrival. The furnace basically drowns. High CO in the exhaust will be a definent indication of this. Carrier I believe was sued in the USA years ago with this (can find it on the internet) 2008 shouldnt have this problem but in Canada we have seen a couple of these situations. Another one for Carrier is if you run into a unit that has a pressure switch that is half plastic and half metal. change it right away. The contacts inside are junk. There was a recall of those too years ago. Keep up the good work and im open to questions and learning. The second furnace with the water in the tubing to the pressure switch is probably a leveling issue and should be tipped slightly to the drain side. Very surprised in lack of CO testing on calls in every youtuber that does service calls. or clocking of meters
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 2 жыл бұрын
I got a lot out of the trap when we checked it a few months prior. Other than gas pressure adjustment what are you going to adjust on a gas furnace to change what the combustion reading is? The isn't any air adjustment, no adjustment for the draft, So what's the point of using a combustion tester on every furnace unless you have a reason to? And even then it's just a confirmation of yes or no it's bad. We have over 100 employees and 12 are service techs, that's a lot of money for analyzers that will need calibrated every year, and the sensors replaced every year. That's not even counting the ones that will get damaged or stolen. It's just not needed.

@@HVACRSurvival So... On an Amana when the secondary is separating from the header and there is no change in the flame and no air adjustment and the flame looks PERFECT and the heating is on the mark BUT the CO in the exhaust is 1000 ppm...Thats ok? and how would you know this if you arent taking readings on every call? I guess in the USA there is no authority like we have in Canada so people dont die of CO poisoning. Very surprised that a technician or even a company would not equip the technician properly and for safety. If you dont have the safety equipment to do your job properly and safely then a company or technician shouldnt be working in that particular trade IMO Im surprised at your comment and slightly concerned with the attitude I got back for a comment about safety for customer houses or businesses you go into. I guess i will go watch another tech that actually does the work safely to get tips of the trade

Good job making sure that pipe was clear. I really hate the way the drains are designed on all of these high efficiency furnaces and it seems that many installers haven’t received proper training on how to set up the drains properly. I also hate the fact that many furnace manufacturers use plastic covers over the secondary heat exchanger that eventually will crack and leak. Goodman seems to have issues with their plastic covers and leaking gaskets on their high efficiency furnaces.

You had better luck with these furnaces then I have had with my Panasonic mini split that the outdoor unit power supply board died because of Indonesian House Geckos and... Parts no longer available! 12 years old! Getting replaced with a Daikin as I have had 2 R22 units for 15 years that never had an issue. Ironically I have a Mitsubishi Electric unit that also suffered a similar issue of a similar age I can still buy parts for. Daikin were also the only brand I'm aware of you can get multisplit systems off the one outdoor unit.

I don't do HVAC (much) but I do network cabling. When you're working with PVC, fish tape has problems. First, if you're not running pressure, you don't need schedule 80. You can use electrical conduit, which is more UV resistant (I believe it's also more heat resistant). That said, standard plumbing pipe ends up with serious blocking issues for fish tape. The 'edges' are on both sides of every joint. (Electrical is flared to make it more of a smooth run, specifically for fishing). So, in a facility like that one, I would _not_ have been even trying to go upwards. When you hit the top, you won't be able to twist it enough to force it in the 90. Go from the top. Once you hit the 90, you can usually twist and push and have it pop the groove into the next section, where gravity is more your friend. My personal recommendation would be to get some rat wire and make a basket over the end of the pipes, to make it harder for the birds to get in. (Putting it across the pipe directly can increase the restrictions. A basket avoids that) I've personally given up on using coiled fish line except for a VERY few instances. Mostly, I use flexible fiberglass 'glow rods', where I can simply attach two to five foot sections until I reach my goal.

I didn't figure the fish would work, good advice 👍👍 thanks for sharing!

Those Carrier furnaces are notorious for crap secondary heat exchangers. I pull the tube from the collector box. If it has the rust colored gunk in it.....bet that secondary is already toast. I always pull the blower on those and visually look at the secondary. You can see the crud in the drain trap too. Check out the N-take2 for combustion air pipes. If the pipe gets clogged, it'll pull open a damper to allownfor combustion air.
