No matter what I try, I can't get my baby to sleep in his crib. What can I do?

You mentioned that you have an eleven month old little boy who loves to be held by you but as soon as you try to put him down for a nap in his crib he cries. You mentioned that you tried crying it out for a day and it didn't go so well. You're wondering now what to do. Many babies have a tendency to be happy in their parents' arms and then cry when they're put down because, let's face it, they have what they want most, which is you, when you're holding them. If you want your baby to sleep in his crib either at nap time or at bedtime then you need to teach him how to self soothe. You can do this one of two ways. The first is crying it out. It's actually been proven to be a very effective method of sleep training because they learn over time that crying doesn't get them what they want. You mentioned that you tried it for a day but it often takes up to four to seven days and for very, very persistent babies even a few extra days past that. If you can just be persistent and stick with it for that long then all of the sudden you'll notice that your baby starts to go to sleep without help from you. It's a very happy day when that happens. After a full tummy, diaper change, lots of love, and some sort of routine that starts to clue him into the fact that it's time for sleep, set him down in his crib, turn around, and walk right back out of the room. He will cry and his cries might get louder as a signal that he's not happy with what is going on. You can let him cry with as long as you're comfortable. If you feel like you need to go check on him at any point, do. But know that it's okay to give him a few minutes and let him cry it out. If this is not effective or it feels a little bit harsh for you then you can try a more graduated approach. After you've put him into his crib and turned around and walked back out of the room, give it five minutes before you go in and respond to him. When you go in, don't pick him up. Resist the urge the do that because that reinforces the behavior and teaches him that crying gets him what he wants, which is to be held by you. Instead just touch his tummy, turn around, and walk right back out of the room. This reassures him that you're there but again, doesn't reinforce the behavior of crying. Now, if he continues crying, which he probably will, give it another 10 to 15 minutes and then go and do the same thing. If he's still crying 20 minutes later, go in and do it again. Slowly increase the amount of time you wait before you go in and check on him again. Be persistent and consistent with this for at least four to seven days, and then I think you'll find that he starts to go to sleep without help from you. Best of luck with it. If you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.

I don't get your point. You don't need a solution to express discontent with what's being presented. I also am not comfortable with that method. Doesn't mean I know the answer. 😊

My issue is my baby does this uncontrollable crying between 10pm - 6am, and I live in an apartment. I'm okay with self-soothing, but the time in which it occurs, and my husband trying to sleep, causes too much anxiety.

Oh and by the way , saying it’s been “proven” that it works to leave them to scream and cry for hours is utter bs. What HAS been proven is the horrible psychological effects of emotional abandonment on infants. Which is what that is.

I usually place my daughter on my legs whilst laying on the bed and move my knees up to 45 degree angle (rowing motion)and back down slowly. After a few minutes, even if she's over tired she falls asleep. The tricky part is then placing her in her crib 😃

I have the same problem. Only my kid is 2 weeks old... Unfortunately I live in an apartment and can't do the cry it out method because it will piss off my neighbors so I gave up and I just sleep on the couch with her. As horrendous as it is to Co-sleep with her I really don't have much of an option.

Our 3month old baby only sleeps around 8-10 hours daily. The worse part is from 2am he wakes up every hour and cry until 7am. For day time he only sleeps 30mins every 3 hrs and sometimes stay awake from 2pm till 9pm. Really tiring and dont know what else we need to do.

Ppl think if you let your baby cry it out it’s too harsh but if you use that type of logic you will never get anything done if you can clearly see or hear the baby on the monitor and know that there is nothing wrong then letting them cry is not bad they are going to cry when they are toddlers to that’s what babies and kids do when they don’t get their way am I am trying this technique now. Hey

As much as I love this channel, this is not good advice. Teaching babies you aren’t there to meet their needs creates anxiety and psychological trauma and actually creates behavioral issues as they get older. You chose to have the baby, nobody forced you. So… tough it out and realize you no longer come first. Time will pass and they’ll get older and more independent. The “crying it out” method is cruel and inhumane to leave a defenseless infant to scream and cry until they fall asleep just so you can sleep without them in your bed.

Completely agree, I have a 8 month old who has never slept in his cot due to having terrible reflux. So many people have told me to just let him cry it out, but I just can’t do that to him. Just hearing him cry for a few seconds kills me inside!

@@Julielevere Please don't listen to people who give you advice like that, that's awful! That feeling you get when you hear your baby cry is your motherly instincts and you should always listen to those and remember babies CANNOT get spoiled and they do not cry for no reason, they cry when something is wrong. Great job being a good momma and don't worry the days of reflux will pass. Im not sure if you're breastfeeding or not but if you are I know that cutting back on anything carbonated or acidic and citrus based will help the baby's flux and also just drinking a ton of water! Best of luck to you!

Cry it out methods teach babies something called "learned helplessness"- they get the message that communicating their distress is pointless so they shut down. It is psychologically damaging not to be consistently available and respond to your babies cries, especially before 6 months of age. I am a psychologist. What's your training?

I didn't sleep train my first two, but did my second. It is not true that it will "damage" your child. They learn trust and love by having consistency in their care. Also, an extremely sleep deprived mother is not in a space to be her best. I really like the book Babywise, and the course MyBabyCanSleep.com

Taylor Heward Actually it has. Cry it out goes against nature. Moms are supposed to be responsive and present to baby's needs. The relationship with mom creates the foundation of every other relationship baby will ever have. Cry it out method causes "learned helplessness" and causes baby to have anxiety and increased cortisol level at all times (which effects baby's development negatively and causes other horomonal and mental issues. Hince the "loveless" society we live in today. Between child neglect (which is what cry it out method is) and the c section rate increasing (c sections stop the bonding horomones from being released in mom and baby during labor) and strong numbing meds during labor (which also stop bonding horomones between mom and baby) people are becoming more and more depressed, anxious, and mentally and emotionally damaged. Having a child is a lot of responsibility. We are supposed to relinquish our own needs and desires for a short period (which feels long while its happening) so that our kids have a solid foundation. Cry it out method is selfish and causes a disconnect between mom and baby. We know better now so we should do better.
