IMHO this was in character for Niao Niao and one of the things that drew the general to her ... when she is wronged she holds on to that slight and doesn't let it go. The general choosing revenge over her love was the ultimate betrayal so how would people not expect exactly this type of reaction. It took growth in both characters to finally let those things go and truly live for each other.

It wasn't like they kept breaking up. He abandoned her at the cliff and jumped even though she said that they made a vow together and she would walk beside him thick or thin. When he jumped leaving her by herself, that's when she felt abandoned and distraught - the one thing she feared the most from the one that she loved happened. That was it for her because she also said if he abandoned her, she would never forgive him. And when he said he didn't regret abandoning her to the Empress & Emperor, Shaoshang was listening. That's when she begged the Majesties to cancel their betrothal and begged Ling Buyi to let her go. This is the only breakup that they had.

@@Kistan12 Without a "will they, won't they" dynamic it would really cut the whole drama short. Early in their relationship NN felt forced into the marriage and was [rightfully] resentful of her lack of power to do things about it. I think that explains her hesitancy over the course of almost 25% of the episodes. Shortly after NN really started living in & with their relationship the general then abandoned her. In the end both characters needed to grow & mature until they were in a place where they could let go of the past and re-embrace their feelings for each other.

He did not abandon her, he saved her life. Too much glorification of the FL past traumas. Don’t touch the wounds if u want to heal it. Use the ointment to calm it and not burn the wound down because it happened. Unnecessary making it traumatizing for everyone. I hate that the FL thinks her abandonment is more inexcusable than he suffering and enduring his father’s murder, and loss his mother’s sanity. I hate this drama for bringing on depressive thoughts to people watching the show. Even rape victims, war crime survivors, learn to let go and live the life. Why promote self-injury for your ego? Shaoshang did nit want to be part of a couple, otherwise why would she feel upset to be called buyi’s finacee. The person from a broken family will cherish a harmony her own family can bring. Sorry, the writers failed.
