Even though I was supremely disappointed by this game, I appreciate your take and review. I'm glad you could still like the game while also acknowledging the game's shortcomings. You hit the nail of the head in terms of my gripes with the gameplay. For me, the story just fell flat and felt like I was missing a bunch of inside jokes, despite playing TSA and Suda's other games (apparently the TSA DLC had crucial plot points that I missed because I didn't play it). My favorite aspect of the first NMH is when the cutscenes get a bit somber and you realize there's more at play than is being let on (Holly Summers' cutscenes come to mind). I was really hoping to get something like that regarding Travis and his family, but it was relegated to a jokey post-credits scene. Also, lack of Shinobi / Bad Girl levels. C'mon!!!

Can confirm: my game crashed 3 times when I was playing through it. Once immediately after beating Mr. Blackhole, another time after paying the entry fee to Gold Joe, and finally during the giant robot quick time event after beating FU. After the first two crashes I was really worried it would be a persistent problem and it had a knock on effect on how I played the game. I saved after every single defense crystal I earned and was always slightly on edge during cut scenes. Overall, I really enjoyed the game, about as much as the first two. The presentation is maybe the best I've ever seen in a videogame. The way they took references from Ultraman to Black Rain (of all things) and spun it into something totally unique blew me away. That said, it's a shame the experience was somewhat hindered by such a major technical issue.

I only played No More Heroes 1 and 2 for the first time last year, when they came to Switch, so I didn’t have that long wait other fans did. So I enjoyed it as just another one, with its drawbacks not being too big a deal for me. However, I was totally lost when it came to the story, and only realised how important Travis Strikes Again was, which I didn’t play. Then again, I suppose it’s keeping with the punk rock attitude that the 3rd numbered game in a series is actually the fourth. I’d say NMH 2 was the best gameplay wise. The first was a better overall package

Quinton Flynn actually was declared innocent of the allegations in court. Unfortunately, by that time, NMHIII was already in production. And it's probably going to be a while longer until he gets voice acting gigs again because business unfortunately tries playing it safe in the court of public opinion a lot of the time. CORRECTION: The full story is posted on the screen at 38:46. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking at the video during that second. My apologies. Certain aspects of Henry's character in this game however indicate that Quinton might've been directed to lose the Irish accent if he had voiced Henry again. Silver Case and killer7 nerds have all kinds of theories based on the changes made to Henry's character.

@@12ealDealOfficial I don't know where you heard that news. Unlike Quinton Flynn, Vic's defamation case was dismissed in court, and Vic was required to pay the defendant's legal fees. At least in the court of law, Vic hasn't been proven completely innocent yet.

Came for Hikiko and Japanese "AAA" gaming in current year, stayed for the commentary, left realizing I can appreciate Suda's postmodern stuff (which isn't really my style anymore) from a distance. I LOVED Michigan, and I suspect I'd really like Killer 7, but the No More Heroes games were simultaneously too late and too early for me. Still, this was a fun ride and a well-edited video with a great message about genuine personalities still making games. That Quinton Flynn drama left a real bad taste though. What happened to "Innocent Until Proven Guilty?" Quintin got Vic'd; guilty forever even when innocent. I'll never work in an industry that works like that, and I doubt anyone in the biz would give me a chance anyway.

What, no comment on how disheveled Travis is made to look extremely like Tony Stark by RDJ on purpose? I'm kidding. The Boss RUsh is the best feature in the game, no more bullshit replaying the game from the start if you just want to experience just the boss battle, now you can do it even at higher difficulties and with a full set of abilities. It really was great. And I agree with you on the open world front. Plus, it's not like Grasshopper is known for their open world stuff, them making more thematically awesome levels instead would be better and keep the racing tracks and Akira-bike, I mean, the totally original donut steel Spieltiger segments intact. The best thing they could do is have the Spieltiger and Full Armour quests as sidegigs before the actual level and the boss and it would have worked tremensdously. There's this game with insane ambition on the PSP called Senritsu no Stratus that had an open world, from a beat'em up point of view(you the kind of side view I'm talking about) but everything was fully rendered in 3D, the movement was in 3D, you could affect the world, you could save people, tke on quests and the levels were the world itself upon which you had to kill aliens, write a report regarding the aliens weaknesses and then proceed to fight them in a giant mecha battle. And in between "episodes" the game had an anime opening and ending and even had mini activitites to do, tieing with how well your team did in the previous levels, like training to raise your stats, find new materials and money to update equipment, bonding events etc. And it even factored New Game Plus in its design. In my opinion, Suda should have tried to be more like that game rather than trying to dunk on open world games and stripping some interesting features from NMH2. The loss of multiple laser sword types hurt me immensely, even though he has so many Gundam references. Not to mention, Senritsu no Stratus was made by Nudemaker, who are now certified indie studios given their Night Cry game so...missed opportunity there Suda. Don't forget Native Dancer strongly resembles Zer0 from Borderlands, who strongly resembles Zero from Max Anarchy / Anarchy Reigns from Platinum games, who also strongly resembles Gray Fox from MGS1. I mean, I have to assume that was the train of thought Suda followed and kinda took the piss from Borderlands. As for the Kimmy Howel / Love scene and boss fight, that was the worst. What a giant fuck-up. Kimmy should have remained a secret boss rather than a short Iggy Azalea / Nicki Minaj / punchline that dies. Oh no Miles, the bleep isn't for FInal Fantasy. The bleep is for "TORIYAMA" aka Akira Toriyama, the mangaka behind Dragon Ball and of course, the designer for the characters and monsters of Dragon Quest and Sonic Juice is almost lifted from Toriyama's designs, more so than any other Ultraman-inspired character. He's shitting on Dragon Quest essentially, despite the menus and powers being FF-looking. The other guy they might have been refering to, and it's a stretch is "AMANO" as in Yoshitaka Amano, the guy behind the initial Final Fantasy games artworks since FU is oddly effeminate and has all the trademarks of an Amano design. And those characters also look "*****" as Travis mentioned. It's not a conspiracy theory, it ties not only to Travis but Suda losing his punk edge a bit, Travis now reflects Suda much more than he did back in No More Heroes. It's not so much for the sake of Travis being in Smash but rather that since Travis is closer to being Suda in game form, he had to clean up his own image. That being said, the Smash salt is probably real, not because Travis didn't get in but rather because he was merely a costume. And the Naomi Tree isn't a Lynch reference, it's just Suda taking a giant shit on Power Rangers fans with the Lost Galaxy / Gingaman reference. In general, his references and likes and dislikes come off as very mean-spirited in this game for some reason, probably because he masks them with the voice and tone of Travis, rather the usual chill voice Suda himself has. In general, this game is a bit mean spirited, missing some of its jovial edge from previous years. If it's due to Suda taking the whole Kill the Past deal a bit more seriously to match its post-modernity or because he got older and more cynical, I can't say but the thing about No More Heroes III's character is that it had gotten much darker. NMH 1 may have seemed more grounded and its villains more relateable than stupid ultraman references but it was never this dark. Not even his early works weren't as dark. There is a bitterness that I can't shake off and it's probably the same kind of bitterness that Yoko Taro tasted that lead him to make Drakengard 3 and Nier Automata, two games I feel were way subpar compared to his previous attempts with Drakengard 1 and Nier Replicant / Gestalt. I hope Suda doesn't follow that path because it's a shame for creators to lose their characters and end up like that. Mikami never lost his character, no matter what game he developed, same with Kamiya and so many others. Hopefully Suda will remain in that majority rather than go to the other gloomy minority.

It does drag this game down a bit that Suda tried to cop to western "games journalists." If anything, the press around him being uncompromising would've sent more traffic his way. But venture capital is a new beast, and has been for the last five years. I doubt Grasshopper has a real high ESG score, so Suda might've had to remove all sexuality and perverseness just to secure financing. I hope I live to see the end of ESG, but the way it's looking, it'll be the west's version of Social Credit. It hasn't mattered that high ESG properties keep losing millions and millions.

I actually didn't mind too much the toning down Travis's horndog characteristics if only because I felt it made sense for his character essentially "growing up". He's got a wife and kids now. Overt perversion just wouldn't feel that right in that context. The fact that he belts out swears like a sailor as battle chatter feels more like the reason why he wouldn't get in. Seriously, would it still feel like Travis if he didn't shout "Fuckhead!" at least once? Kind of surprisingly, the game got better reviews than the better technically-performing Travis Strikes Again, though there are of many reviewers who still don't get that Suda wouldn't be interested in writing a traditional grand finale.

Amazing game. I feel some of the short comings of the game would've been solved if the game had a little longer of a dev cycle. All in all it was a very fun game, one of my favorites of the year and a great return for Travis. It was cool to see how Travis himself has grown and from loser otaku to a world saving superhero, I can't wait for the potential sequel in 10 years.

Having waited until I finished NMH3 before watching this retrospective, I can definitely agree with you on the games many short comings. The game really does lack quite a lot of fun side activities or interesting places in the open world, with Neo Brazil genuinely feeling unfinished. And the rewards for finding the collectables really doesn't justify the time it takes to do them, like finding all the Death Cards for example, nor would it be any better if it just gave you an achievement like on Xbox or Playstation. Which is a shame since there are some interesting side stories told in the Travis Strikes Back VN format. If the game were linear like you brought up, it could've lead to some great moments like Bad Girl or Shinobu playing more of a role in the plot instead of being absent for most of the game, maybe even more abilities to use instead of having them all dumped on you in one mission. Still, despite its faults I had a hard time putting it down compared to TSA, and still enjoyed the roughly 20 hours I spent on it. On Spicy difficulty you really have to prioritize which enemies you need to attack and those ramen stands become incredibly helpful. Its also where doing the lackluster side content becomes helpful to level up Travis, just a shame that this game could've been more but was crippled by a small budget or due to COVID.

There's an outline of a great NMH entry, but there were some limiting factors that kept it from greatness. Odd regressions, gameplay substituted for sidemissions/collecting. On paper it fails, but there are enough neat elements to bring you back in despite the budget.

re: re-meeting Notorious, there's actually a bit during one of the intermissions with Bishop where Bishop meets a new character for seemingly the first time but Travis says "didn't you guys meet in TSA?" and there's a joke about how no one played TSA also the crashing issue seems to be a memory leak related to the open world (might even be Santa Destroy specifically). you can fix this when emulating the game on Ryujinx by expanding VRAM pool size to 6 GB and enabling an "Ignore Missing Services" option, but it's still a big issue, especially since people playing on real hardware have no such fix available. optimization patches are definitely and desperately needed for NMH3.

Just finished the game, came straight to this video! I really liked it, although I wish they would have traded out the crappy open-world with NMH2-style levels. I have a theory about this game's development and why the open world is so bad (and why there's so much seemingly cut content). My guess is COVID screwed up the game's schedule and how it was worked on since it hit Japan pretty hard, and so they decided to focus first and foremost on the combat and boss fights. This would explain why they're so good and look/run so well while everything else is just barely passable. This is based on absolutely nothing.

I'm also one of those people who liked the open world in 1, but I agree that there's no good reason for 3 to have an open world, especially when it's so big and desolate. Also thought it was funny you'd mention DP2 in this review, I drew similar parallels between these kinda disappointing sequels to cult classics. Still had a ton of fun with NMH3 despite how rushed it felt in a lot of places. It may have my favorite combat in the series.

Although I liked the core gameplay there's just not enough to go back to after completion, there's one single stage in the entire game for Christ sake and the fights before a boss legitimately feel like side missions to a complete game. Everything about the style is top notch in NMH3, but it's not enough to Warrant a $60 price tag to a mediocre overall experience. Either way great review. You have the best review on NMH3 on KZfaq.

TSA was a different vibe/mood altogether. Lower key and scale, but a wealth of introspection from Travis and Suda. It grew on me after playing III, which offered little character development.

I myself have played through the game 4 times on every difficulty with about 60 hours in and never once experienced any crashes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ mostly just shitty texture loading issues

Like other people in the comments i can also confirm the game crashes, i ended up crashing post game when i discovered the tree planting side-mission, i was down to the last 12 or so trees and the game crashed... and i'd forgotten to save, haven't touched the game since, lmao

My game crashed twice in 3 playthroughs, annoying but not enough of a problem that I thought much of it, I’ve had games much more prestigious crash on the Switch too so it wasn’t really a big deal in my eyes

While I do agree and have felt the tiredness, I still do like the details of a place you can see where you do the side job in the world. Just keep it to Santa Destroy and make it populated with stuff to do. Learn from the Yakuza series and keep it balanced with activities to take on. Smaller open world, keep it modern (TOILET TELEPORTATION PLZ) and we finally get a packed small open world which I wanted NMH3 to have but alas.. PS. Yep fully crashed once so far..wasn’t Kamui in TSA tho’? Huh?
