Yes, it's true. Swarovski will no longer sell their beads to the DIY market. In the US, no more orders will be allowed after Sept. 30, 2021. Here's some background and what will happen next!

I don’t understand why people seem to be so hooked on Swarovski. I used to own (now retired) a large art shop (retail, art classes custom framing, etc.) all suppliers are, to some extent, unreliable. They are looking out for their own bottom line, not yours and not your customers. As soon as I heard all of the awkward “news” being spun out by the company, I realized that they were going to cut out the non-bulk market. These large companies do not consider orders of a few dozen per # to be bulk. In my retirement I have started beading and jewelry design again. I find preciosa to be fine in my work. I do not believe we should encourage Swarovski by hoarding the scraps they allow us to buy. Let them be stuck with it. A clean break NOW.

I agree with you except that I feel Presciosa can't compare to the brilliance of Swarovski. I find their colors are less saturated. Hopefully Swarovski will seriously regret their mistake. I think Swarovski has lost their market share because of the cheap Chinese crystals flooding in. Such a shame!

Well I self I would like to say that I could probably afford a pretty decent car maybe a 2018 or so with the amount of crystals that I have and the kit that I use them with which I am no longer allowed to sell as well as the teaching of these pieces that I do which I am no longer allowed to teach. Then there’s the all of the books that I have bought over the years which call for their products and honestly do not work with other products, because no company makes the AB2x like them or the rivolis or the fancy stones or the same exact colors. I have tried to use a different company. I try I think six or seven that I found some Chinese, some still Austrian and some from czech companies. To make it easy, I got fuchsia in all of my orders, 50 of each. Not a one of them is the same shape, size, color (that is a biggie), or faceted the same nor does any other company make the amount of colors and shapes or copy the newer shapes that they made. I tried to ignore all this and just stick to my patterns. Nope. I had to change the amount of seed beads in certain stitches, other kits i had to scrap altogether because I have yet to find a brand that does not cut my waxed fireline or one g. I haven’t even gotten to the bead dreams entry that I had decided would be entered many years down the road if at all be ause it was getting so intricate and well huge. It’s my creativity and a piece i have by now spent over 200 hours on, hand beading a head to toe costume that stands in its own. Anyway, that was my stupidity. Most of us do not pay wholesale prices but I do live near Atlantic City and I could not help but notice 3 new Swarovski stores in the casinos. Remember, they’re not saying that no one can bead with their crystals. Just the people who they used to advertise to and made sure they were reliant on them and wrote books with their name in the title and those they called Ambassadors and encouraged to write tutorials in magazines they sponsored and rather than raise their prices or start phasing out certain beads or making a less expensive line they are opening more stores and providing all the beads they could want to every couture fashion house in paris, milan, rome, nyc, and london. But not design students or independent designers or those that make things that the average person might be able to afford. And they did this during covid, a time when those of us who lost our 9 to 5 jobs and were depending on the income provided us through their products needed them more than ever. They could at least let people continue to use the ones they have to sell as jewelry but they even issued a statement against that. Ate they going to buy back a 17 year collection from me? 300+ magazines? My Interweave online subscription which has taken down their projects using Swarovski? The 60 or 70 books I have by everyone from Carol Wilcox Wells to Heidi Kummili . They’re elitist pricks and I hope they go out of business.

Those of us who make Irish dance dresses knew this at the end of 2019. It caused quite a panic, even though Preciosa was well known to us. This is going to be tough on us small makers, as crystal encrusted dresses are pretty much the standard now, and only the big commercial dressmakers will be able to get what people perceive as the best quality stone. Swarovski may very well regret this.

Greetings from Poland. Czech glass is really very good. I have several pieces of jewelery from the Czech company Jablonex from Jablonec, which for over 30 years have not changed their look and shine at all. Once in Poland, Jablonex was a very popular and accessible alternative to jewelry made of gold and precious stones. Preciosa also has very good quality elements and I think they can catch up or even beat Swarovski. As soon as they become the leading company in the DIY market, they will certainly work to further improve the quality and expand the product range. So let's give them a chance :) As for Swarovski - by the way, Daniel learned to grind and cut glass from specialists from Jablonec - I think that they made a mistake by withdrawing from a large DIY market. But well - life and time will show ;) Jill, warm greetings from Poznań :D

Hi everyone! I have some Preciosa crystals in colors I've never seen anywhere else and they are among my favorite beads. I don't think we (really) have anything to worry about. Preciosa has been given the chance to expand their lines to pick what Swarovski is taking away. They will want to be successful, too. Do you know anything about Krakovski crystals? I heard they are a good "replacement" option too. I think they will fill that gap as quickly as they can. And Jill, I love your new recording studio. VERY nice!! You look good too, especially your hair. And you look HAPPY! (New store, Kristal, new merchandise, what an exciting time.) Love that necklace too.....I have one just like it! LOL. Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us. Take care!

I just received some Krakovski Crystal stones the past couple weeks, and WOW! IMHO the quality is virtually indistinguishable from Sw---- (don't want the crystal police coming after me for using "the name that shall no longer be used" LOL 😂). They don't have all the old colors available yet, but what they do have is stunning and they seem to still be expanding their line - plus you get fantastic quality at a fraction of the cost! 👍😀 With Precoisa also expanding and upgrading their products, Dreamtime Creations new Dreamtime Crystals lines, Potomac Crystal Krakovski Crystals, Czech pearls and MC beads, etc. we should do just fine. It's encouraging and fascinating to see how this situation has sparked innovation and expansion in these other companies. 😀

I heard about this from my local bead shop back in January or February, so I've been preparing myself for a while. Luckily for me, my local bead shop also serves a community that's not as infatuated with Swarovski (they're a bit more casual for bead stuff), so they were already mainly carrying Preciosa as it were. The thing I have used Swarovski for in the past are the rivolis.

Thank you for the background, Jill. It was interesting to learn that Swarovski's roots were in the Czech Republic. Lucky Preciosa. It benefits from the marketing and branding Swarovski has done over the years to cultivate a market for high-quality crystal beads and elements. And now Preciosa will inherit Swarovki's customer base. A poster (Irene Kiew) at another site wrote: "Swarovski has a new CEO who is restructuring the company. They have announced that by September 2021 they will only deal with wholesalers who resell to companies that use the Swarovski stones / beads in a finished product and retail the finished product. That means bead stores and the DIY market can no longer purchase Swarovski stones / beads. They are doing this to preserve the image of their brand as a luxury high-end brand and going forward they want to focus on their other products instead of the loose stones and beads." Pffft! Well, wish them luck with their snooty marketing pivot. Sorry-not-sorry that our patronage did not mesh with their aspirational image. I wonder what kinds of products they'll be focusing on (crystal chandeliers and sculptures? Hood ornaments for Maserati's?). I guess the beads were just a nuisance as a product line. I wonder, though, how long they will continue to supply their crystals to wholesalers. Hell hath no fury like a crafter or artist scorned. I don't know about anyone else, but I will buy more than I normally would of any product comparable to Swarovski's, just to assure the competitor's success. I've also seen another brand of crystals mentioned: Krakovski. I look forward to seeing what they offer.

As someone else said, Preciosa has had this opportunity handed to them on a silver platter. I, for one, can't wait to see what they do with it. As I have heard this last year I have been using preciosa and checking on others that are coming out.. Eureka has started their own line of quality crystal . I personally not thrilled with some of the colors but they do look better in person.

Preciosa beads are excellent quality beads with great color & uniformity. If you don't know Czech crystal has been some of the best in the world for centuries. They will meet the challenge.

Swarovski has jewelry stores in the malls. Perhaps Swarovski is hoping sales in their stores will go up when we cannot make our own jewelry.

Exactly, Lydia. I agree. Sounds like they (Swarovski jewelry) just doesn't like the competition of other jewelry makers making jewelry w/their crystals and selling it. Apparently, it must be competition to their own jewelry line.

Any word on whether Preciosa has, or will develop, a line of undrilled crystals comparable to the larger Swarovski “fancy stones?” I don’t mean the chatons/ rivolis that may go up to 18mm, but the much larger Swarovski faceted fancy stones (ovals, pears, rounds, rectangles) that one typically bezels to use as focal pendants? I’ve been buying quite a bit over the last several months, but some of even the basic colors aren’t available any more in certain sizes. Thanks! (BTW, I bought a couple of “Celestial Crystal” fancy oval stones from Fire Mountain, and they were just awful.)

I usually bought Preciosa more than Swarovski anyway. I just wished they had a broader selection. Now, maybe they will.

I think with everybody now buying Preciosa as a result, they probably have the funds to do so now. Lol

This has been in the wind for several years now. The local bead shops in Sacramento, CA started transitioning to Chinese crystal due to the price increases they were incurring and customers not wanting to pay. I purchased some to try them out. Not the same but alright and very cheap. I also purchased some round Precioso that were on sale, very beautiful crystal in light colors. I found out about Swarovski's termination of colors through Fire Mountain. I purchased some colors that are my favorites that I knew would sell out. Thank you so much for this information and date because I love Swarovski's, nothing compares. I'm a fan of AB2X especially. Preciosa are beautiful and I hope they're able to match AB's. This is truly sad, but I believe they want to sell exclusively to haute couture houses.

Believe it or not, there are many Preciosa AB2X that I like BETTER than Swarovski's! We will be launching the Preciosa line on our website in July!

My first thought is will it drive up the prices of items from manufacturers and makers who will still be allowed to use them as they become more exclusive.

Yeah, Preciosa doesn't do it for me. They're gonna need to do a 180 in terms of their color choices to turn my head. This sucks.

Ive always liked Preciosa, I have a lot of them from the eureka collections. There a very pretty crystal. You could always do what eureka crystal did and launch your own brand of crystal. Food for thought.

I've been buying Swarovski beads from Fire Mountain Gems. They are closing out as well, of Swarovski, and prices aren't too bad. The more you buy the less you pay. I got 4 packs of a mixture of beads quite a lot of cool neat colors and styles for $9.99. Don't know how long this will last, but I may go back and order more. I have bought Preciosa AB crystals 4mm and 3mm from Fire Mountain Gems and they are very nice as well. Sad to hear about Swarovski and there plans of closing out for makers etc.

Jill, thanks for the update. I was hearing all different rumours about Swarovski. Just to clarify, are they only selling to wholesalers or are they phasing out the production of crystal beads, pearls, and rhinestones totally? If it is the latter, in my opinion it is a bad business decision. I have 2 books on Swarovki, one was written by Daniel himself.

This completely sucks! I ABSOLUTELY love ❤️ Swarovski Crystals and I love anything made with these crystals because of the way they enhance any project! I'm willing to try Preciosa and I hope that they will be able to eventually match some of Swarovski's offerings. You never know, Swarovski may decide to come back, or a part of the family may break off and start their own company and line of crystals for us DIYers. As crazy as last year was, just about any crazy thing can happen!

there are plenty of factories in eastern europe making lead crystal beads that are cheap because it isn't a brand name, i've bought from agents that buy in bulk from them and i couldn't tell the difference.
