Specifically talking about taking the average residence and turning it into a completely off-grid home. Even the best, most expensive solar panel retrofits utilize the grid heavily.
Electrical is based off a 240 single-phase home with a 200 amp service. (50 amps at 240 volts is 12 kW)

I live off grid in the desert, in a 38ft RV powered by a 50amp 120v system. It has 2 14,000BTU Coleman A/Cs, a full size refrigerator, 2 space heaters, 2 big screen TVs, Xbox, microwave, guitar and 100w amplifier, even washer and dryer. My 50amp main is supplied by 18*300watt panel array charging 4 lifepo4 batteries. I spent $10,000 6 years ago and STILL have more power than I need at any given time.. just not enough to run everything all at the same time. (We have a LPG generator for laundry on hot summer days) My choice to go off grid was one of the the best choices I’ve ever made. I own my home, my land, my power, my water, and my vehicles. It enabled me to save ridiculous amounts at a young age. I’ve been waiting years for the batteries to die, replacement cost was saved in the first 3 months of being off grid. My wife agrees, it was SO worth it!

I’ve been off grid in the desert on a meager 12v system with 800w of solar power for 2.5 years now. I built it just to “have something” and I’m finally getting around to a true upgrade. Building a 48v system that will provide way more than I use, AC included, for under $7k. I clicked on this random video and decided it’s “stay in the city and eat the bugs” propaganda.

Get them in this field, unqualified 'entrepenuers' that start out working with the qualified and doing some panel installs and 'self-teaching' watching and think they're better than doing the years to get technically qualified. As soon as they deal with something slightly out-of-the ordinary and/or technical, they haven't a clue. @SlappyTheClappy Power is measured in watts. Your house uses a certain amount of watts at any given time, and the solar panels output a certain amount of watts at any given time. As long as you produce more watts than are consumed, your house is powered fully. A small house may use 6 thousand watts with several appliances running, so if you install a 7 or 8 thousand watt system, you will have enough power even during the afternoon when there is a bit less light. Amps are just one part of electricity; you could have 50 amps, but if that amperage is at 140 volts then it totals to 7 thousand watts.

They have wood stoves and wells. There’s all kinds of low power appliances you could use like air fryers. You could also just cook on the wood stove. You can wash clothes with rain water and dry them on a clothes line. Not to mention the fact that you can also have other power sources to charge your batteries such as wind turbines, hydro turbines, biogas, etc. I plan to live off grid in a tiny house so that way I’ll be debt free and I can peruse my own business ventures that I actually want to do without worrying about making payments, high taxes, or being stuck in a 9-5 loop.

However, if you're battery panel (most) have a 50 amp output, it's not going to even start. Even if you have a smaller ton AC, using under 50 in the air handler breaker, you have to ensure you aren't running a washer and dryer, depending on how much they draw. This is why most homes are not and cannot be fully off the grid and feed power to the utility company instead of directly to the home. Too much start up draw on the average home. In fact, we went over the top to ensure that we have redundancy built in, just in case something fails. 3 x 5KVA inverters in parallel, single phase. 4 x MPPT solar controllers, each capable of 4.5kW output. 10 x modular LiFePO4 battery units at 3.4kWh each. You are either going to suck off your battery backup (very expensive) or you are borrowing from the grid and offsetting with whatever you potentially send back. At the end of the day, most people just reduce half their bill or so. That is, during the day they have a solar array priced out to meet their demand so their panels are generating their usage to the kw. You don't usually buy a massive array to try and cover 100% of your usage. It's not cost effective

Do you want to go off grid? There are two sides to the coin. On one hand, solar panels trying to run a town/city house that's 3,000 square feet or 800 ×2 16,000 square feet basement is 800 square feet and street level is 800 square feet. You can't because you need batteries and knowing how much soral panel is pumping out × how many you need to run: rang, hoid fan, fridge, washer, dryer, and electronics like wifi, tv, computer/ laptop and cell phone. If you want to go off grid, you can. This is the other side of the coin. You can go off grid Easier than people say can by knowing how to build a small log cabin adding some solar panels just to run 3 things: some kind of lighting, something to charge your cell phone, and some kind of small things you like you need corded electric toothbrush you could run. In the cabin has: you can get a small wood burning appliance/stove or build your own wood burning stove.

You can run everything or almost everything in a home on a 100 amp circuit..... 200 amps max capacity is more common. 50 amps at 120 volts isn't exactly low. That would equal around 6000 watts. But if that's all you're getting at peak hours, yeah, that's inadequate. And with off grid you've got to deal with storage and inverters. Batteries alone are not only expensive, they have low energy density and don't last all that long. Off grid for general use just isn't a great idea.

Then 9k in wire, mounts and what ever else. Might even get away with 48kwh at a better margin for extras. 48kwh is pretty good for day time loads which will run central air and anything else. Even water heaters and some day time electric heat as dump loads. You should be able to run everything a normal house uses off 48kwh which is 4kwh for 12 hours. This would be ample to run some really heavy loads any day of the week. worst case, in the event of an extended blackout, w/ low light conditions, you can plug in an auto start generator (that ideally talks to the back up interface), to keep you going. Nobody uses electric ovens/furnaces for “off grid” homes. Propane is how you cook and heat your home. A/C is tougher but you can do it with a large system or use a backup generator for the unbearably hot days. This video is clickbait.

Yep folks in subdivisions all over America are grid tied. And why not use the power company as your main source or battery allow the solar to try and keep the bill at $0 ? This very smart view this dude has. People just don’t realize the size of the battery bank needed to run a home. The panels are cheap the batteries and management systems are what cost ya.

Back when I worked for a Wildland fire suppression company in Nevada, our company HQ only had solar power, and we trucked in water for washing. We had to ration power use after sunset, but it wasn't rough living or anything, especially by the standards of people accustomed to camping on mountains, which happen to be on fire. EDIT: This was back in 2009, with a tiny 18"x24" panel, and the real limit was the cheap car battery we used for storage, a real modern system would do way better.

When you get into Solar you have to understand that you can save money and use Solar but not the same way as you did when on the Grid unless you have deep deep pockets! If your conservative with your power usage and aware of how much power your consuming then off grid Solar can work at a fraction of what a Net Metering system would cost you plus you can get an immediate ROI on your Solar investment instead of a new lease payment like many do for a system you will probably never own! Smart consumers do not Rent/Lease their Solar systems!
