That scene where he says after all that time he still doesn't have the words to describe or explain what he saw or how he felt or how he feels now is heartbreaking. He wishes he could open up and talk about it and let it out, but like so many of those other men, he just doesn't have the words. Maybe there are no words for what they saw.

@@user-wb7wr9gh3othe introduction of weapons capable of such destruction or wiping an entire company out in one charge isn’t horrifying? You’re the one who’s capping man! It really was horrific. POW camps were horrible too, conditions almost as bad as the trenches. Disease, artillery, the first machine guns, first tanks… New weapons the world wasn’t ready for in a world wide conflict. It only got worse then after.

If y’all know history before America and before these nations where built y’all would know the original rulers of these lands the devil and his demons just wait till a massive scale war comes to be not any ordinary war but war back during times after Christ pyramids Rising using energy and creating it to connect each other around the world huge ships like mountains that shoot off lasers many more weapons that control weather can control levitation others can do far more worse but war will come and set lose seek Christ and he will help you walk thru all the roughness what that will come to be this war will be far beyond than anything else and all of us will fall along it

@@user-wb7wr9gh3odon't know what the first one is but your completely wrong imo. Slavery under most systems is just working on a field for 10 hours a day its hardly horrific on the short term. (galley slavery would be worse but I'm sure you didn't mean that). And the vikings burned villiges down, grappled, pillaged, plundered etc, but they didn't do that EVERYWHERE, within SECONDS. A company (which were organised by villige meaning you would fight alongside friends) can be whipped out within seconds by a machine gun, just like that all your friends... Everyone you've ever known... Dead. And you got a front row seat to it all. How do you think working on a field is worse than that?

World War 1 saw one of the harshest fighting for reasons such as Trench warfare. Soldiers literally living in the wet mud, with rodents, insects all around them for months. Many soldiers didnt even die from the enemy, they died fron diseases in the Trench. Thomas Shelby got worse than the Trench. He was a fking Tunneller who had to live underground and tunnel underneath no man's land to lay mines, afraid that at any second he would be buried alive.

Imagine a young tom with his trench buddies who the call themselves trench peakers, reminiscing about home, and one brave fellow gets up and boasts how when he gets home he will be the most powerful man and they all laugh and smile while the bleeding sine sound comes fading in as it zooms in tom shelbys face as it goes from a smile to the familiar stare he has now and its just muffled war sounds around the young tom.

As someone who has volunteer into an earthquake of magnitude more than 7, I can confidently say that when you see buildings falling, people panicking, people being crushed and dying, and roads cracking open, it is not fun. It can change someone... obviously a war is worse, but i can try and understanding the pain.

Add to that that Tommy was a tunneler. Literal hell on earth, or the closest thing possible at least. I've read some stories few years ago, from Italian and Austrian tunnelers of WW1 who dug in sub-zero temperatures in the Alps. That most of them managed to stay (at least relatively) sane at the end of the war is testament to how incredibly powerful the human mind and will can be

Honestly shout out to the generations of women that were there for their boys and husbands. Even in their torturous silence on what our fathers witnessed and did, our mothers still held them close, loved for them unconditionally and knew deep down that even though they might of came back from the war, their childhood died with their brothers over in those trenches and foxholes.

You never realize it; what you give up. Then you come back and try to be normal. Your family lies to you because they want you to be normal. So you lie to yourself. And after years of lying to yourself, you start to believe it. Your memories are like a movie. Something that happened to someone else. But every now and then, late at night, the demons come. And you relive the evil you visited upon the enemy.
