Yesssss, exactly this. Mbappe threw a fit at the start of the season cuz he was forced to play Striker, so Enrique moved him to the wing. He played most of the season in an inverted winger role with overlapping runs from Mendez / Hernandez. That position provides so much freedom to shift position and play more wide, central, and make runs into the box that a normal winger wouldn’t be able to make. Pretty sure it’s the same position Gavi played at Barca. Anyway, the point I’m making is that Vini plays the LW spot and also makes a lot of movement into other positions. Not sure if I see these two working out as well as expected. You need at least some positional discipline. Ppl crap on Haaland for being a bad player technically but everyone can admit he’s exceptional at positioning, timing, and playing his role correctly. Most ppl see Vini/Mbappe duo being basically a faster Vini/Benzema duo with Mbappe “dropping deep” and “roaming” but that’s nonsense. Benzema acrually had that ability it was is strongest attribute coming back, getting the ball, and playing off Vini. Mbappe, with all due respect, is somewhat a speed and skill merchant. He thrives off open play so I don’t see him being able to play that Benzema role. Also think of what Son/Kane had at Tottenham. Basically what you’re left with is a lot of overlapping runs to dead ends. Vini cuts inside into Mbappe, Mbappe makes a wide run, pass is cut off. Or vini just runs into defenders defending mbappe. Also another point is that Madrid is a counter attacking heavy side. They defend deep and then have players like Kroos to capitalize on a long ball to Vini in open space. We’ve seen it time and time again. Just look at Madrid vs City 2nd leg game.
