Fun fact: Lyon has won the French Ligue 1 seven times, all of the 7 titles came consecutively between 2001-02 to 2007-08, and Juninho was in all of those seasons. The only season in which he didn't win the league was 2008-09.

@@budimulyadi6636our Brasil squad was so stacked in the 2000’s that Juninho was rarely on the starting 11 despite of his insane quality. He only played 3 games in the 2006 World Cup but he scored a goal against Croacia I think. He played in the 2005 Confederations Cup but he was only on the bench against Argentina in the final. He probably should have gotten more chances to play but Brazil squad selection was brutal back then! I’m sure he would gave scored more if he played more!

Thing is Juninho was the most devoted hard working freekick specialist, while everyone was doing anything else or nothing at all he practiced freekicks experimenting shots/angles/distances. Freekick with Juninho on your team became a PENALTY..... guaranteed on target high chance goal from ANY distance.... Best FK ever, by far.

Exactly. The genius thing was that even his missed free-kicks were dangerous because of the knuckle-ball, where the ball is unpredictable, so the keeper has no way to punch the ball ''safely'' outside of the reach of opponent strikers. So if any strikers of Lyon were near the goal, it would be an easy rebound.

I saw him grew up in my school in Recife - Pernambuco - Brazil... There was others great players in his age... starting in football indoor... but they gave up to play... only Juninho kept going... The speciality of Juninho freeckicks are the ball just levitates in the air and it doesnt even spin ,its not knuckleball, almost like it ,but its just straight up levitation. I remember watching his matches with my dad and I was so stunned that I would see all his matches and try to act like am scoring the freeckicks.

Unstoppable is not the right word, they didnt win CL. But sure they were rly good team and Real Madrid nightmare. With Juninho the had 3 wins and 3 draws against RM, after he left they had 1 draw and 3 loses. He was great in freekicks but he also was rly good playmaker for Lyon even though he was rly offensive AM. top 3 AM at his prime for sure.

I'm happy to have witnessed a Juninho free kick goal. It was at world cup qualifiers against Bolivia. Brasil was the away team and I only went to the match because Juninho was playing. It's wild watching today's players and seeing how few of them come close to the kind of technique players like Juninho had. Beckham, Juninho, Ronaldinho, Gerrard, Scholes, Pirlo, Xabi Alonso, Seedorf - even in their Legends games played in their 40s, their passing and free kicks are still something else.

@@cattycats4 they literally played in around the same era so how you going to say the goalkeepers and ball where that much different, Juninho manipulated the ball better than anyone. Roberto Carlos could make the ball move but didn't have control over it, literally no footballer came close to Juninho and the range of techniques he could use, the goalkeeper didn't know what was coming they had to take a chance. He scored against Iker Casillas one of the greatest goalkeepers in Real Madrid history from 40 off yards beating him at his near post, it didn't matter who was in goals. And your point about crossing the ball like that was funny, off course you wouldn't cross the ball like that, the forward would never get on the end of the cross, it would confuse everyone, I would have thought that was obvious.
