In Russia, it’s been dangerous for ordinary people to speak up against Vladimir Putin’s regime for years, but new censorship laws introduced since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 have made it tougher than ever.

Despite huge risks, Russian filmmakers have been filming the impact of the war inside their country. Whilst many thousands have fled, those that stayed are having to choose - to oppose, support or stay silent about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Not just tolerate, but inflict too. All those drafted russians keep saying "you gotta do what you gotta do", and the fact that they are going to another country to kill people doesn't even register in their perverted brains. Should have died fighting for getting back control of your own country, not your neighbour's.

Would be great if the country of my friends and family, would finally be considered an equal by your country and left alone to make her own decisions. Our countries won't be friends again for a long time, but let's hope we can atleast live as neighbours.

@@dylanvogler2165 Thank you for your kind words! It means a lot. I lived in different countries and found that people everywhere basically want the same thing: wellbeing for their families, opportunities for their children - this is a ground for trade and cooperation, not war. It is a shame that people are also gullible and can be easily tricked into hating "others". I dread to think about immediate future here in my country, but maybe after capitulation, after whatever bloodshed will follow we'll finally have a chance to rebuild. And this time it will be just a normal country, no delusions of grandeur, no arrogance, no hushing up crimes of the past...

@JustAnotherNerd I agree. Maybe one day our countries can even be friends again. But yeah all people are basically the same. We all want the same. It is sad so many people blindly support imperialism and the hate propaganda that comes with it. I think a major different in recent decades, and it happend with alot of struggles, is that (with the exception of Germany which was forced into a honest view of its history) that most countries try to get away from glorifying the past and instead, I say this as a history teacher, try to see history as a human thing. Aka, there are good and bad parts. We should stop glorifying the last and I hope that Russia can one day start living with us I the 21st century as it feels that some many of your countrymen are stuck in the past. It seems Putin wants to drag us back into the USSR times. Something we try to get away from as fast as possible (just like the Baltics did)

Talking about sovereignty is moot until a BORDOR is established and there are areas in Donbas where a MAJORITY of the population speaks Russian as the primary language. These areas constitute 10-15% of the Ukraine but these 'Russian' Ukrainians want to be a part of Russia So there's that and there's the Crimea that Putin won't give back but the bottom line is the 85-90% of Ukraine doesn't want to be a part of Russia. Against that backdrop the ONLY way this war will end is when both sides compromise on a NEW border. Ukraine should give up the areas where the people want to be 'Russian'. In fact, they should be glad to get rid of them and it won't be easy but it's the only way Putin can save face and Ukraine should forget about forcing Russia to pay 'war reparations". That ain't gonna happen (ever) but there are other ways Ukraine can be compensated that Russia would find more agreeable. WE western democracies will rebuild Ukraine and Russia will agree to 'lease' the Crimea from Ukraine for 30 yrs at 10 billion/year. In fact, they already agreed and this is what the proposed before they invaded. So the framework for an agreement to end the war already exists that would allow Putin to save face and in exchange for a new border Ukraine will gain a it's freedom. So let me know when the deal is done with a new border . Then we can talk about sovereignty
@netflixandchinchilla

@@LuvThatDirtyWater All of what you said is true, but Ukraine tried that already. They ceded control of Crimea to Russia in 2014. It wasn't enough. They came back for more. Would it be enough this time if they gave up the Donbas? Or would they come back for more in another 10 years? And more in 10 years after that? At some point they have to put their foot down and say "this is our home."

I just wish you and those like you, were with more and could do something about it. If Russia had leaders like you, we can finally live as, equal, neighbours that respect *each other* . I can't agree more. This was one of the best short docos this year. As a foreigner living in Russia with my Russian wife, it's not easy to see what's going on here because like most majority of Russian people here, she supports Putin but against the war not because of Ukraine, but the lost of young Russian lives. When I showed her about the victims in Ukraine with the suffering from the women and children. She just ignored them and told me not to fall into any of the Western, American and Ukrainian propaganda. Many Russian people believe Ukraine is never has its own rights to be an independent state. They believe Ukrainians betrayed them since very long time ago, so this war is "justified". 😢 It's really sad to see this. I really hope peace will come very soon and praying for the Russian people who really understand what is right and what's wrong. I truly believe that not all Russian people are bad and brainwashed.

There is nothing about bravery. It's just irrational behaviour. Women more empathetic, emotional and less rational than men (in average). I don't do anything because it doesn't have any sense. I know in advance that it's doomed from beginning. Russia has been an authoritarian empire since Ivan III. It's natural for Russian state to be like that, the same for China. So do you really believe that one ordinary man can change the state structure that exists for more than 500 years!? Lol, good luck.

I don't suppose John Stuart Mill is well known inside Russia (banned?). But these words of his are worth citing: "“Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”

This is a powerful film. Heartbreaking to see how these ordinary citizens are desperately trying to stand up to the might of the Russian State. The bravery of these individuals is inspiring. Even the smallest acts of "defiance" are treated harshly. It's a Kafkaesque nightmare. To see a father and daughter who so obviously love each other but be torn apart by opposing views. What comes across is the generational divide where older folks who appear in the film seem to be under the spell of Russian propaganda while the younger citizens appear more savvy. This might be partially due to the social classes involved with younger educated activists featured and older working class folks being interviewed. What a nightmare to find yourself in AND IT COULD EASILY HAPPEN ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. WE ARE ALL JUST ONE OR TWO ELECTION CYCLES AWAY FROMA SIMILAR FATE IF WE DON'T TAKE HEED.

The main problem with that is politics. If Putin was to be removed like that or assasinated the next Putin would rise and it would be much worse. Putin needs to be removed by his own people in a political way. Only then it can bring peace and calm in all this madness. Don't forget that this is a political game that Putin started and it can't be stopped untill there is a winner. Putin has started a game he can NEVER win. Putin is becoming the next Hitler and you know how that ended. Russian people need to rise up before it is to late. And when they do, they will have the world as backup. The Western leaders also share big part of the responsibility. Many intelligent russians warned them that a fascist regime is brewing in Russia as far back as 15 years ago. Instead of imposing sanctions and openly declaring Putin and his government as criminals they continued the trade and diplomatic relations ignoring the takeover of Crimea, ignoring the inciting of the conflict in the East Ukraine. They ignored as Putin stifled and eliminated all free speech and independent mass media building the worst propaganda machine of the 21 century, comparable only to other dicatatorships like North Korea, China or Iran.

I doubt she is looking at the comments here but that bravery should be encouraged and praised. that's the tragic irony of his propaganda. he is a master gaslighter, basically calling Ukraine all of the things he is (calling Ukranians fascists when he indeed is facist) and saying Ukraine is doing all the things he actually did (he says Ukraine attacked Russia first which there is no proof of and that Ukrainians are Nazis which there is also no proof of). actually he started long before this war when he took Crimea in 2014 which got less media coverage. his regime controls the media so the Russian narrative is hammered into the Russian civilian's heads. of course there are people in Russia that are aware of the false propaganda their government is spewing, who knows how many since so many are scared to speak out. pray that russians can learn the truth of what is happening in and to Ukraine by their government and for this war to end with Ukraine getting it's land rightfully returned to them. "However they're in power nowhere." is exactly the kind of pessimistic, cynical, 'non-political' narratives Putin & other authoritarian leaders want you to believe. YOU have the power to change your countries leadership & direction - run for election, join campaigns/rallies, start discussions, vote at a bare minimum. Thinking all rulers are the same is an extremely dangerous false narrative that encourages disillusionment with politics and disengagement, which allows freedoms to be chipped away exactly as it has in Russia. Do NOT allow yourself to become depressed simply because you're somewhat dissatisfied with politics, it's all the more reason to become engaged!

I have worked with and still work with many talented Russian engineers. Those that could have moved to other countries where their companies are based. Those that couldn't I have sympathy for them. Sergey, if you read these comments stay safe.

@@frumptruckers7216 you will first have to pay for their education in Russia and for the mistakes that they made with us and we paid for them and how they gained experience .. as well as for everything that they could create for us and we counted on them and then invite widely smiling at your cunning country!

I have been to some countries on earth that had some serious social problems. All countries do. The average person you meet in these places are kind and generous. I have not been to Russia. From what I have seen, from both native, and foreign perspectives, makes me feel that I don’t want to go there. It’s truly unique in the sense of the anger, shame, close minded, and unhappiness expressed by the citizens. So much hatred for themselves, that they can’t help but project it on others. I have never seen a more brainwashed people in my life. There appears to be no sense of hope. The youth seem to have figured out that their government refuses to tell them the truth. This gives me hope for the future. Sadly I don’t see any change for middle aged, and elderly? They are doomed to live out their lives in misery, and despair.

That's the sad truth which is happening here in Asia too. Those that are anti-US will support Putin and Xi of China and generally anti-government too. They blame the atrocities, killing on US. The sad truth is some of these people I know is not only middle aged but highly educated. Putin must be defeated in Ukraine just like Hitler

Rashists are not victims - they are murderers and terrorists who have been going to this result for more than 26 years. Georgia 2008, Syria 2012, Ukraine 2014 and 2022. Russian criminals deliberately sowing evil.

Irina, hopefully we can all live in peace as neighbours some day and all have this freedom. Including you in Russia. Let's leave the USSR and its legacy finally behind us. Right now it seems Putin tries to drag us all back into that time. Also sorry for not answering in Russian even though I speak it. I just can't get myself to do it. I hope it doesn't offend you.

In 2018 I became fascinated with both Russian & Ukrainian Culture. So much that I began taking Russian language lessons online & was so excited that I could learn a new language that I could use to travel to both Countries & meet new amazing people. Since February 22nd, my heart has been broken. I experienced a deep depression that I never knew was possible. However, after spending 6 long months in mourning, I decided that I wasn't going to let one crazy dictator ruin an entire Culture. Therefore, I decided to continue learning Russian & never give up hope that someday these two Countries will live together in Peace. The same way that people didn't give up on Germany.
