Since Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has banned men of fighting age from leaving the country unless they have a valid exemption.

A #BBCEyeInvestigation found that nearly 20,000 men have fled the country illegally since the beginning of the war to avoid being drafted. A further 21,000 have tried to leave but were caught by the Ukrainian authorities. Many got out by crossing the border illegally, others paid substantial bribes to buy a medical exemption.
BBC Eye hears from the men who made it out hoping to be reunited with their families now living abroad.

@terence at their height, they only had 40 million citizens living in Ukraine. If 35 million were Ukrainians, that means 17.5 million males. If they are lucky, that would leave them with 10 - 11.5 million between 18-60. If 8 million left, they would never have been able to field a standing army

I don't have much of a social life to speak of. But even without fuzzing around. I count at least 8 Ukrainian men as my neighbors. I've seen another one (9th) but I'm not sure if he lives here or was just visiting. Either case I'm pretty sure it's way more people than BBC is transpiring. Curious detail, all are relatively young men. The older ones topping at mid 30's...

I didn't work a job I hated for 20 years paying taxes the entire time all while enduring the hardships of parenting to have my son blown apart by a shell. My country has honestly been pretty good to me and my family. @nandofim It's not shameful for mobilizing when your country goes to total war and the economy is put on a war footing. It's the responsibility of a citizen to answer the call when your country faces an existential threat. I'm not talking about Iraq or Afghanistan though, but if a World War broke out or war with China or Russia, you should be registered and travel restrictions put in place. Russians who had money fled after the Ukraine War broke out. Almost all Ukrainians want to fight Russia. There's always some that try to flee though.

It’s true. I was there as a volunteer, and literally the only job that the military police had was to stop all of the men they found not in uniform and ask them why they weren’t fighting. I was stopped once by the military police and they were very disappointed when I produced my volunteer card and US passport card and therefore they couldn’t conscript me against my will.

You do realize that that is not a 1:1 ratio? You need to rotate men, you need to have reserves and you also need to train the conscripts, which you cannot do all at once. Even if losses are higher, you need to mobilize large numbers, because not all of them will be suitable and you need to cover manpower expenses for 1-2 years in advance.

I'm from Ukraine, and i have nothing in this country, i just didn't have time to achieve something, i don't have my own family, my own property, but they want me to sacrifise my life for others, and for other people property. I think it is violation of human rights forcing people to fight. It means you decline their rights for life, right for freedom and health, and sacrifise them for other people that means government think some people life are less valuable then others. So if you are male in Urkaine, your life means nothing. Don't trust any media that telling you that we are fight for freedom, i see no freedom, our country is full of savages just same as Russia.

Go to war and surrender it is not an option, because russians treat POW really bad, they can even use you as human shield, or just kill, it is not propaganda, i now the exact cases when it happened. They do not comply with any conventions, while Ukraine is obliged to do this, otherwise it will lose the support of its partners. So really funny thing if you are russian that don't want to fight, and you surrender, you have more chance to stay alive than Ukrainian men that don't want to fight. So i'm gonna escape illegally through the border, or be the prisoner that refused to go to the war.

Ukraine got suckered into this situation by the USA/western hegemons... they gave a false sense of security and Ukraine made decisions based on these false pretences since 2008... maybe even further back than that. Right, EVERYONE should fight, regardless of their birth or status. It is messed up if the Ukrainian government is keeping higher born men at home and sending the less fortunate. Then they’ve lost my sympathy if thats the case

And by the way, speaking of Chechnya - they are the most loyal region to Russia right now, they also get a shit load of money from Moscow to rebuild - and you have to see what it looks like now, beautiful and modern city :)

If they don't want to fight then let them go. It says a lot about Ukraine that they aren't willing to. A country is only worth as much as its citizens think it is.

Totally agree, it's their choice. A country is nothing without their citizens and culture, throwing people onto the frontline known they won't last speak a lot about their government. Once the war is ended, Ukrainian people can return home and continue their life, however if they all die here, their culture is no more.

@@omarab837 you're very wrong: there's nothing bad with putting your life, health, family members, beloved people above defending the most corrupt and hypocritical country in Europe. So, if I am the only breadwinner for my family, what would happen to my dearest people if I die? They would be totally neglected by the state I defended, and they would die in poverty. I have nothing to defend - EXCEPT my dearest ones, from infringements upon my life. Ukraine as a state is as evil as Russia - with violation of human rights, corruption, hypocrisy and so on, and, as a Ukrainian, I see nothing to defend. There's no "side of light" in this war.

As my father said to the commander when he was forced to joined the army "If you force me to kill, you'll be the first to die" My father refused and had to go to prison 3 times before they gave up. This was in Sweden in the 1970

Ah well that is excellent news for Ukraine then, as it means that Russia already lost the war in September 2022. Recall that 700,000 men fled Russia in the weeks following Putin's partial mobilization (as opposed to 40,000 men fleeing Ukraine's over two years of war and full mobilization). Those are the Kremlin's own figures btw. And if you're wondering, since then the Duma has passed numerous laws to more effectively mobilize soldiers, and cracked down on men attempting to avoid serving by leaving the country.
