the biggest danger comes from fire after a crash, and beside the safety, a gas car can be fixet, EV are mostly trash, the battery even if it has only light damage, can't be used anymore! they sold us a big lie with this EV, the other factor is elettrosmog, in Germany a university tested, the fields created by electromobility range from zero Hertz (static fields) to several tens or hundreds of kilohertz (low-frequency fields and fields in the so-called intermediate frequency range). It is not yet known what effect the values have on health, but I remember as they told us to don't sleep beside your Laptop, now imagine the effect of your body from such strong electromagnetic fields!

I'm not saying this for sympathy, but because the poor police officers that have to go to the families homes to tell the parents, spouses, etc, and hear the initial disbelief, the denial, then the screaming, and the crying. Those men and women in law enforcement that have to do that job have my complete respect and admiration. @Praise The Lord Thank you for your service and God Bless you. Not to mention the fear first responders have when approaching an EV, first they try to find the key fob and get as far from the car as possible to keep it from inadvertently moving, secound they have to determine if the 400v of the battery is shorted to the body, finally they have to figure out how to safely cut for extrication without hitting any major power cables.

@@Floww23 one can still exercise caution without getting extreme. Something as simple as having rules around phone use that prevent you from falling asleep with it on your bed can save you from severe harm if it catches fires, which has absolutely happened. People sleeping with and on their phone. Just do some google searching. Also, a more guaranteed issue health concern is the constant proximity to the EMF radiation amplified by it, commonly, being tied into Wi-Fi signals at night. That is the larger issue why people should have health oriented rules around their phone and consider sleeping far from it.

You are over exaggerating. Yes it is harder to stop the fire but in such a crash hadn't Hammond not been in an BEV he probably wouldn't have made it out alive as the engine would have been sitting in his lap due to the high force impact. In the Rimac OTOH he had the low center of gravity and large crumple zones on the car saving his bacon.

Not to mention that the occupants sit directly on top of the HUGE EV batteries , they are literally under the entirety of an EV cars floor, where as the battery in an ICE vehicle is isolated out in the engine bay. Not only is the EV battery a significant fire hazard, but the toxic gases and fumes from a damaged EV car battery can easily be fatal.,even if it does not catch fire.
@AmandaHugandKiss411

EV fires are difficult to put out because basically it is a chemical fire. It doesn't require oxygen to burn. And they can reignite hours to days later. So placing them in a wrecking yard, compound or dump with other EVs potential mass fires could break out. Fire departments simply don't have the equipment and means to put out a larger scale fire.

Then I guess you haven’t done your homework. First will be the cost to purchase (more expensive than old reliable), cost to install a level 2 charger in your house (unless you can wait the 2-3 days to charge it with the charger the car comes with), electric vehicle fee (replaces the gas tax), high registration fee (usually goes by weight), higher insurance premiums (insurance companies usually total the car if the battery is damaged), electric vehicle disposal fees (you WILL , not maybe have to replace the battery within 8-10 years. Car won’t be worth half of the $20,000 cost which means EVs will become disposable cars and it’s not like the old days where you pulled off the road, took the plates off and walked away).

As a retired firefighter paramedic I can tell you the extrication training will need to change due to the batteries and their electric hazard. Even with air bags and other safety features, a high speed crash or roll over will be more significant and will cause more serious injuries. Extra weight is a serious concern.

I was driving home from shopping with my wife about a week ago and we seen a big plume of black/blue smoke coming from the town next to ours. We thought it looked toxic so didnt go to investigate but we checked on the news to see if anything was mentioned about it. As it turns out there is a large storage parking for brand new cars where one electric vehicle had spontaneously combusted and ended up burning over 100 other electric vehicles parked alongside it. It took the fire department over a day to get them put out and they had to bring in a special group who dealt with toxic fires using some sort of foam. Great job for the environment

What no one is talking about is even in a small collision there can be battery damage that may trigger a delayed short circuit and battery fire days after the collision. If a EV is in a minor collision it's not to be parked in a garage or close to other cars until the battery condition is checked over. I'm learning to completely avoid the current styles of EV's that are using dangerous battery systems.

I like radar assisted cruise control. It's crap in some cars but pretty decent in others. When I used to have a long commute it very much reduced fatigue. That said, you still need to learn the quirks with each car and pay attention. For instance in a Honda, if someone cuts you off it will dangerously slam on the brakes. Our Mazda is much smoother and will deal with the situation more naturally. I've not tried a Tesla, but whatever the case, you basically have to learn about the system and where its shortcomings exist and constantly look out for those situations. I don't think level 5 or 6 will ever really exist, but basic adaptive cruise control, if not abused. I think will help with fatigue on long drives. I don't think I'll ever buy an EV though as they just don't make sense. Maybe a hybrid, but not sure. Gasoline works great and I see no reason to abandon it.

I remember people walking up and saying, Oh my God, he's dead for sure. Oh my God, I can't watch. I can't imagine if her van weighed twice or three times the mass when it hit me. One major change that needs to happen is a change to the regulations on ‘commercial light trucks’ since that is what is driving car companies to produce ever larger and heavier pickup trucks rather than sedans, hatchbacks, etc. The USA is the only developed country where road fatalities are increasing year on year and that is mostly because of pickup trucks being increasingly prevalent. Pickup trucks are heavier and have much worse visibility, especially as companies focus on making extraordinarily large hoods as a marketing gimmick. This has unfortunately resulted in a massive increase of children being run over and killed, often by their own parents in their own driveways.

You didn’t even mention the fact that a serious crash involving an EV is likely to rupture the battery pack resulting in an intense fire. A gasoline fire burns at around 600 degrees F, while a lithium battery fire burns at over 3209 degrees F. You can shut off the oxygen to a gasoline fire and put it out. A lithium battery fire produces its own oxygen making it nearly impossible to put out. The fire spreads so rapidly and intensely that you may not have time to escape. Then there’s the toxic fumes and the fact that anything near it burns too.

Maybe that will change if the cost of the minerals in them goes up high enough, although the recycling problems are due to more design issues than just the mineral composition. Big trucks have a weight limit because of how they stress the roads and infrastructure. An EV truck at that limit will weigh no more than an ICE truck at the same limit.

@@glennmartin6492 You are correct, though there are two upshots from that 1) Those EV tractor-trailers will be hauling *substantially* less per trip than a conventional ICE semi 2) Heavy crossover SUVs and compensatory pickup trucks, in tandem with increased tractor-trailer traffic, have/has already put a massive strain on the highway system; making those SUVs heavier and requiring the tractor-trailers to take more trips will only worsen the issue

@@coupledyetivonvanderburg5385 You are incorrect. The battery weight is just a little more than the weight of the typical truck engine, the engine itself though weighs next to nothing in comparison. Thank you for covering this. There's other problems with EV's I'd love to see discussed as well. Additional weight means more wear on tires as well as the roads themselves. The batteries catching on fire is a serious risk and can be worse than gas fires. Batteries die over time and you have to replace them at a huge cost, better to just get a whole new car at that point. Going for a trip? Can't just refuel quickly and get back on the road. Have to wait for it to charge. Not to mention, where does the electricity come from to power these things? Mostly from oil. You can find tons of images of charging stations connected to diesel generators.

We've seen EV busses burst in huge fires, where whole cities end up with air sirens and lockdown. What is your take on how this massive oversight and lack of regulation in these highly dangerous batteries gonna impact crashes and safety? What will a highway pileup end up looking like in the future, with just a couple of EVs getting batteries punctured creating massive toxic fires?

Eyewitness reports that people were seen beating on the back window desperately trying to escape. Of the 4 occupants, one person burned alive, and the other passengers were all critically injured. So next you get into the backseat of a Tesla you should probably be carrying a window breaker. Its not about battery fires or EV's. It's about dumb modern car designs.

As an engineer in the automotive sector, I can tell you that most projects start at least two years behind any new platforms. our budgets are tight so there is more profit than quoted which means corners are forced to be cut and will be and they will pay over time in payroll expenses since this is less than redesign outsourced work. Yes EV is on the rise and I understand the safety concerns associated yet this causes very expensive engineering mitigations to both 2D and 3D data which can take easily months to validate into production. Thus you have multiple cost sectors that potentially cause downstream effects to the project creating a tremendous a mount of stress. IMO, the board and shareholders only care about making more money than they put into the project at the end of day and you as an employee are there to suffer through it.
