I love the Web Planet. Then I'm a Surrealist and take those sort of things in my stride. Imagine it how Jim Henson may have portrayed it - Dark Crystal style. Sadly, the BBC couldn't have allocated those sort of resources and a lot of the tech just wouldn't exist for many years.

Yeah, the hand movements and body language are one thing but it does say that she also developed the speech for the Optra and Menoptra. Maybe I just don't understand enough about Mime but I didn't think speech was much of a factor

@@thevacuumofcomments2946 the Menoptra have super annoying voices until the last 2 episodes and then they become more normal... I kinda assumed they got critics saying how bad their voices were, but maybe it was their inner critics that they listened to, telling them how nonsensical it was to take speaking lessons from a mime.

I kinda took web planet (if there's any allegory in web planet at all) as about colonisation. Like the aminus invaded (probably) and pushed all of the bees out, until they were too weak to fight back, or like underground bugs, completely separated from any culture they used to have. Then they take back their homeland, and live mostly in peace with zarbi. The only thing that had to be destroyed is the aminus - the all powerful god in charge of everything. In metaphorical terms, the regime itself. I mean, if you're trying to get a point of this story makes more sense than communism to me.... but I'm one of the only wierdos that can remember the plot of the web planet by heart so

When it comes to the Web Planet I like to quote William Burroughs.....Exterminate All Rational Thought. Once you do that, it makes a lot more sense.

*Bits* of it are good. As for the rest of it, it's much more fun once you have a taste for things like bad cinema. When the Zarbi bumps into the camera, and you can hear the floor boards clunking underneath the feet of the aliens on the surface of the alien planet, that's pretty top-notch stuff. 👍

By the way, person on twitter is just talking out of her ass on Tegan. The section about her husband in 2020 literally starts "According to one account", which is how we start all our sections with conflicting information. Nobody edited anything to say Tegan and Nyssa broke up. There was a version of the page prior to that that didn't say "according to one account", but it didn't even explicitly say "they broke up", it just says she entered into a relationship with and married the dude. Could have been in a thruple.

@@thevacuumofcomments2946 Did I say this? Forgive me, it's been at least a year. Could you point me to the comment? If I knew exactly what I said I might be able to reverse engineer my train of thought. Off hand this isn't implausible, but I'm not seeing any evidence for it from google, so if I said this I was basing it off of a pretty obscure reference in like a DWM or a random interview or something.

@@najawin8348 I can't remember whether I'm thinking off the comment section of Council of Geek's Dark Water review or the Sarah Z comment section. I would look but I'm allergic to anything I've said that long ago. Can't survive the cringe. I only thought of it (if it did happen) because of the latest news that Chibnall had cancer and the new discourse surrounding the Can You Hear Me Graham scene. Obviously, my heart goes out to him, and I don't object to it being part of the conversation, but saying "Chris deserves an apology" or it's suddenly "realistic" is a bit of a stretch. I don't think we extended this courtesy to... any other writer in Who really.

@@thevacuumofcomments2946 I read through the SarahZ comment section recently. Definitely not there. I'll check Dark Water/Death in Heaven, brb. And I totally agree with you on the Chibs front. I also, uh, think the fact that he's basing so much of his work off of his issues with adoption actually makes it come off worse.

'("Don't cremate me" I could handwave away as something the kids probably wouldn't understand, as that's something you have to grow up a bit to really understand, but I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna take a stab, since the timeline isn't well developed, at linking this up with some of his later work. I could be completely wrong, but remember how Moffat's mother died during the writing of S10? It's not unlikely that talks about how to handle her death began during the writing of S8.)' Yeah, 100% just a guess on my part.

This episode has aged badly. The costumes, experiental visuals and how alien it is is cool. The tardis crew great. However the Story is too long. The Zarbi chirping instead of talking makes the story drag more. If they could communicate it would be more tolerable. The menoptra are fine and rhe mole things and the Zarbi concept themselves. Its just their chirping is annoying. I like how they made it feel alien with vasaline but think they overdid it a little at times. I did like how it built a planet woth various creatures and none of which are humab at all. Just a shame its lengh and the Chirping drags the story down alot. The Romans, The Web Planet and The Crudade are the only s2 stories i dont like and the first since the cavemen episodes i dont care about. Well i like the romans until Nero comes into it and then because he is a comedy character it ruins the story A LOT for me. The Web Planet ill only rewatch on marathons. The Crusade i dont care for. Story does nothing for me. I believe this onr was popular at the time but it has ages probably the worst in terms of popularity
