No power! Good thing we have a generator

We lost power at the TV station but fortunately we have a generator just for this situation. In this video I take a quick look at an Onan 250DFM generator that is providing power to all the critical loads inside the station. This unit is not big enough to handle the whole building so our sales and marketing teams went home for the morning.

Cool video. It’s like the generator I have here at my house. NOT! We do have a 20kW whole generator with an automatic transfer switch, but it’s nothing compared to the beast in this video. Thanks for sharing!

Nice! Diesel genny for the win. At one of the radio stations I worked at I had to do a manual cutover when we lost power, in the middle of the night. Not fun. But luckily they coached me up enough to: 1.) Start the generator 2.) Move the giant transfer switch over to generator (took a lot of arm strength to move that thing too).

Oh wow, I think if you are going to get a generator then you have to put in an automatic transfer switch. I mean, what is the point of putting in a transfer switch if it isn't automatic?

@@TVJAY I guess it was cheaper for that small market FM to have the overnight board op BE the transfer switch. :😃

@@arteeFartee-e9 haha yeah I guess. At my FM station, we put in a home style generator and those come with an automatic transfer switch. I am thankful for that because it is a transmitter site that only two people even have access to.

@@TVJAY I had the same, but the first thing to do was first find the ATS in the rubble, and wire it up to the wiring. Wall collapsed in heavy storm, and ATS was on the other side. But it got connected, was not too dirty, and worked in manual mode, as the ATS controller was still buried in bricks, and even after it was dug out it was not too healthy. Also live and in the rain, though we could turn incoming off at a street disconnect, to wire in the AC incoming and outgoing side, and put power on before the UPS ran out. Then connected the generator side, and covered the ATS with a garbage bag to keep it dry. It only had to last a month till the wall was rebuilt, and the new one came in to replace it. Lucky the fence I used did not go in the hole as well.
