This is the original video, as filmed by me, with real sound, never seen before scenes and better quality.
Fabricio Pereira is a BJJ fighter that did a challenge against fighters of other martial arts in Malaga, Spain, back in 2001. Finally, a Karate guy named Cristobal accepted the challenge and they fought in October of 2002.

I have to hand it to the Karate guy. "Why," you may ask. The karate guy stepped out there, he put his ego on the line, he took a risk. Defeat is painful and that look on his didn't hide it, but anyone who has rolled knows that failure is one of the best teachers we have. My hope is that he realizes the necessity to supplement his skills.

Mr Wilson i agree that the karate man is brave enough to step in there but he definitely didn't do his "homework" . he didn't even spend some time learning how to sprawl or at least protect his arm ..he went in there with pure karate and the results were as expected ....

It's great to see people test out martial arts. I think the reason grapplers beat hitters is because close fighting works so much against the understood anatomy. I used to assume that fighting on the ground was basically a last resort for people who had already lost, but in truth it's just a totally different type of fighting that's normally pretty easy to access in unarmed combat.

He was going for a flying knee and didn't expect the BJJ practitioner to close the distance so quickly. You have to remember this is back near the year 2000 when stand up artists were still unsure what a grappler even was. They had zero take down defense. No offence, but you have no idea what I could do to you if you got anywhere close to me and you most likely have seen what grapplers can do. Many people say who would do that period?? Well when you have no ground attacks or defense, your only hope is to knock someone out very quickly right at the beginning in a devastating fashion. To do this, you need to hit hard and big... and it almost never happens against someone who is trained. This type of attack the karateka did probably would work on someone who isn't trained in BJJ to close the distance, but it isn't going to work most times against a BJJ practitioner. He was going for a big shot, most likely the karateka had taken out others with this move who he had sparred before and was going for it. The problem is, what happens in real fights and sparring... are two different things. This is why this seems unrealistic... But you need to realize the same thing or worse, would have happened to you.

+Robert C. Christian 1. The karate guy clearly knew what bjj and grappling was in 2000 it was very popular due to Royce Gracie bringing it mainstream 2. He wasn't going for a flying knee he ran up and started punching with his hands down. This is y most striking arts have died bcuz they're useless against a good grappler
@rcchristian2

Showtime_Kick123 said _"The karate guy clearly knew what bjj and grappling was in 2000"_ Prove this. Do you even know what his name is? He may have heard of it, but I am a 4 stripe purple belt in BJJ and he didn't know even the basics of BJJ. You can clearly see this by how he moves. So prove to me he clearly knows what BJJ is Many people who fought in Pride in 2000 still didn't have a ground game so I don't see how you can make this assumption.

Mikki Mouse you didn't waste it bro there is good in anything just don't waste your time with something that is trying to get you to score points over causing damage and being affective in an actual fight. The karate guy went in no holds bar because in points karate it goes in quick burst till someone lands then they reset and go again if you watch early Mochida fights he struggled with it after he would connect he would either hop back and hesitate or get happy feet and lose all technique. Hell Joe Rogan did points taekwondo and he has some of the hardest kicks I've seen

As a Karte guy my options are limited to stand up, what happens on the ground? I thank God because my knowledge in karate makes me understand and assimilate my new knowledge in Jiu-jitsu and I love it. OSS my friends 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Well he's obviously not experienced or knowledgeable in ground fighting. Until this point, he probably hadn't really seen it, so he didn't know how to approach the fight. You got to remember that BJJ practice all the time on how to take someone down and close the distance. Stand up fighters generally don't train specifically to counter take downs and clinches. If they did, then they would probably do better.

Ended up with a challege, some grown man threw me around the gym and absolutely beat my ass. I came in the next day asking to teach me how to actually fight and defend myself. They forgot all about the fiasco the day before, these people took me in and not only taught me proper technique, they also set me on a path to live a better, less violent life. Thing about most strike based martial arts is that it all goes to shit once the grappler gets in close enough. Can't do crazy roundhouse kicks and whatnot when you're getting folded like a pretzel.
@Vousie
@Vousie 7 жыл бұрын
Then again, you can't grapple if the guy manages to get a roundhouse in. The thing with these strikes is many of them are one hit KO's - the Karate guy only needs one good kick to win. If he'd dodged the BJJer and then kicked, he could've won. What really happened here is the BJJer took the Karate-er completely by surprise and then it was done. Perhaps if they'd done a second fight, where the Karate guy would expect him to try to trip him, then it would be a much more even match.

After seeing the classic grappling vs striking 'match' ups, lesson seems to be that both, and all fighters should train a bit of everything. Im biased towards BJJ but there come situations where you need more tools than JJ to survive... Mainly situations like many vs. one where submitting a dude on the floor leaves you really vulnerable to all the other attackers. Kudos to the heart of the fighters, so much ego though :/

I agree. However, being 2001, I doubt the guy knew that he had to tap or when to tap, if that makes any sense. People who don't do grappling don't know when they are necessarily in trouble until it already hurts a lot. At the heat of the moment he thought he could take it, but I think he should have tapped instead of yelled at 1:34.

You can see that he does not move hes arm at all after the fight, it just hangs dead there. When the adrenaline is running you might not actually feel it instantly, even if you snap a bone. Just search "bjj bone breaks" for example. Most do not visibly react to it before they get a clear view of the damage done. In one video the guy who's bone snaps just gets up fast, yells for someone to bring him pain killers and for someone to drive him into ER asap. "mma leg break" is another good search. Guy throws a low kick, opponent checks it breaking the leg of the kicker. The one who threw the kick doesn't seem to notice before he actually stands on it again and the shin just folds in half.

Alfredo Stefano , there was probably not much thinking going on in his head, just pure emotion, anger, pain, disappointment. He was probably mad because the other guy fought in a way that he felt was cheating, he had never, ever faced this form of fighting. Maybe he felt that he could beat him in a second round. Most fighters in these videos think that and go for 2 or 3 other rounds. Maybe he just wanted to act tough to save some pride because he felt humilliated, cheated, disappointed. He felt all his years of hard work were a complete waste of time and effort. Again, it's not his fault, it's pure emotion, he was cheated into thinking that he would be able to defeat someone in a real fight, but he was swiftly shut down and destroyed, mostly emotionally.

right because getting attacked by multiple people happens often, lol.. and to be honest, being a black belt in karate doesnt help you in a multiple attacker scenario much anyway. you think what this bjj practitioner did to take down this guy was in anyway special or nuanced? any half athletic person in the street ready to throw down can instinctively do a double leg take down or accomplish some rubbish trip to bring the fight to the ground. this paired with every wanna be hard mofo in the nation's affinity to watch UFC and that dude will know to mount you and drop elbows. hey, wheres that karate or krav maga again? in a multiple attacker scenario, a bjj guy would turn tail with insane cardio but IF the fight somehow went to the ground, he/she would know easily how to get back up and fight off people trying to keep you grounded. bet you didnt think about that. bjj folks are limb and body manipulators. id arm drag fools into each other and meta game the shit out of some random ass wanna be thugs. karate is bad to the bone but bjj is the foundation to all martial arts.

but would you crash tackle someone with a double leg take down on concrete? be honest. most fighting sport are on a special type of ground. in some bjj take downs, your arm will hit the ground, and break, before the other guy hits the ground. bjj is great but needs modification for the street, if you deny this fact, you're blind. double leg taking down where you run at the guy, while on concrete = your knee is fucked. even i figured that in ten seconds watching MMA, and i don't train shit. id only try to tackle someone on some nice soft grass. spin kicks suffer from the same problem. in sport fighting you are bare foot, on special ground, in real life, you are wearing shoes, and maybe the surface has too much grip, or maybe its super slippery. therefore i wouldn't use a spinning hook kick in a street fight, even though i can do one. BJJ is a sport. i'm not trashing any martial art, especially bjj which is extremely useful, but MMA = a sport, with rules, on special soft ground, etc etc. people aren't stupid for pointing out things like this. on a different kind of ground where the bjj guy can't just spear tackle into a take down, the karate guy might KO him with kicks cause he cant get close enough.

Boxing is great but MMA allows kicks soooooo karate is pretty good to know. Just ask George St-Pierre, Lyoto Machida, and Chuck Liddell all former UFC world champions.

I used to do Shidokan growing up, and my criticism was always that the form was never incorporating or refining techniques that were better and or efficient and just plain different. It was weird to me that it was very heavily based on using your opponents momentum and flowing with their movement, but for holds and ground, it was all about breaking contact to create distance and not just stopping the threat. It seemed like the philosophy was going against its self sometimes

That humility from the karate black belt was beautiful. Classy. And then the overwhelming mentor aspect (stereotypical for a reason) from the BJJ black belt…. Just full on class! Now… if we can combine the two.

Fair fight! As often Bjj guys have a good nose for how to create a situation of momentum for their techniques. They often have good knowledge of tactic. Traditional guys may be good in technique but have a huge lack on tactics. A bad tactic for bjj would be to not fight on the ground. So he created (takedown) the situation for him to do more techniques and win the fight. Respect from both opponents to each other. Great

Karate fighters usually train against other karate fighters. That's a valuable experience to have. I guess every martial art has it's own strengths and weaknesses.
