When you’ve got tall grass to cut and there’s no way you’re going to be able to bag it, it’s time to pull out the trusty Honda HRX217VKA and set it to rear discharge.
Mowers with a rear-discharge use the natural airflow to push the grass to the back of the mower and out towards the ground.
The beautiful thing about this is that it's not throwing grass onto anything that's on either side of you, including plants and sidewalks.
Learn more about the benefits to using the rear-discharge feature and watch it in action in this video!

Honda self propelled mowers are great. I’m on my 2nd one. First one was 12hr sold, gave it away, still ran great. My current one is about 6yrs old. Starts on 1st pull. I just run non-ethanol gas & change the oil with full-syn 10w30 every spring & sharpen the blades. These just keep running well. 😁

Unfortunately, rear discharge is terrible with this mower. The grass gets stuck at the end of the chute and falls onto the yard in clumps. After every mowing session I have to walk around with a leaf blower to break them up. Super annoying.

Honda made the smarter than ever. We're discharge instead of side discharge so the grass does not blow all over into flower beds when beds are located close to each other. Every other manufacturer should do the same

I just picked up an HRC-216HXA since Honda is getting out of the small engine business next year. I have another HRC that was purchased about 30 years ago that is still going strong with no issues whatsoever. I just changed the oil and did the basic maintenance that you have to do with any mower. I checked the level on the hydrostatic transmission every few hundred hours and only needed to add a small amount once. IMO, these are the best mowers made. Also, Honda makes a side-discharge chute that can be found for ~$50 online. I will use that to create "lines" of grass, then bag up those lines. I typically only fill the bag 2-3 times on a decent size yard with San Augustine in need of mowing. Doing this not only allows a good portion of clippings to fall into the grass to return some nutrients, but also allows the Sun to dry/wilt the clippings on a sunny Houston day, thus reducing their volume even further.

How does this compare to a HRU216?

I always felt that having a rear discharge would cause all the clippings to be blown down onto my feet. I hate the thought of that.

I have a dumb (to most) question. I like to push my mower and use the drive when I need it (I'm old and need the exercise). Can you do that with this unit or does it "click"? I'm hoping this belt-drive model will allow it.

I have this same mower and it weighs about 90 lbs and it does "click" as mentioned, thus it isn't very easy to push as a standalone mower and is fairly dependent on the belt. The alternative is to set the speed/belt tightness to light on the dial and with it engaged you can push it and cut faster. Personally I've cut similarly to this method on shorter areas of grass to speed up the mowing process where possible. Hope this information helps!

I heard Honda will stop making lawn mowers? Is this true, and why? I've had two Honda lawnmowers and currently use the Honda HRX217VKA and love it. I now see on KZfaq Ariens is making walk behind mowers and look similar to Honda lawnmowers. What are your views?

Yes, stopping manufacture in September, selling until they’re all gone in 2024. It sucks.

The Honda is a way more refined proven mower over the Ariens. I have been using a new Ariens this spring. Cuts nice but is not a Honda

I call BS on this.. I have these HRX mowers and they are incredible machines but the back discharge is terrible. If you leave the flap closed like this the grass will clog up the chute in 5 seconds. There's only one thing to do. Take the bungee cord and open that chute all the way. As far as discharging goes, side discharge is superior to the back discarge cause it shoots the grass far out not allowing it to clog up the chute opening.

yep once reason why I am not getting rid of my craftsman side discharge. when I want to blow all the crap towards the woods I do a run forward and backwards until all leaves and stuff are blown towards the woods rather down each strip.

@@ncvman Sure, but that Craftsman can't hold the candle to Honda in any other imaginable metric there is. From the engine to the quality of the machine, longevity and support.. But yeah, I get what you're saying. Honda's back discharge sucks. If I was Honda I would leave the back discharge and simply add the side discharge too. This way the mower couldn't get clogged even if it wanted to. I have a commercial push mower from Kawasaki, it's an old beast. It also has the back discharge and the mower tends to clog and bog down in tall and wet grass. I really contemplate of cutting the hole on the right side of the deck and give the grass another point of exit from the deck.. Hopefully I won't fu@# the mower with this genius engineering move.. 🤣🤣

If Honda were to improve the rear discharge on this and similar models they should just increase the space of the rear cover and create curvature or "L" shape it with expanding gap towards the ground to blow excess grass straight to the ground instead of just the back of the discharge cover where it gets clogged. Small clippings are not affected as much but tall/wet grass or skipping a week is a concern and likely will require more underbody cleaning attention as well as cleaning the discharge chute.

@@vegass04 I disagree my Briggs and Stratton been going strong since 2006, starts first pull 190cc 6.75 hp. Honda has too much plastic. Mine is simple no transmission.

@@ncvman you could buy a simple Honda if you wanted to. This is a silly argument and the Honda doesn't rust

With rear discharge, there is no way you can get rid of cut grass, will always stay in the line where you pass. With side discharge, you can push the grass on one side and remove it completly from your grass by pushing it to the right on each pass with shredding it more and more. I'm doing it this way when i cut my grass. Have the same result as if i was using a bag. Bad design of Honda IMO. They should have made the side ejection option.

Horrible to walk behind when you rear discharge. Ruin my mowing shoes.
@Hakudoshi23
@Hakudoshi23 Жыл бұрын
This is very true. Rear discharge mowers like this have a direct impact on shoes, socks, and pant legs that will likely need brushed off after finishing the cut. I speak from experience with the same mower. It is a nuisance, but it takes a couple of minutes to brush it off and some more to wipe the shoes. For this reason, it is best to just have a pair of cutting shoes/boots dedicated to grass cutting.
