Beginners, please ignore this video. Don’t tie your line to the back of the arrow. The safety slide is to keep the line from going back beyond the rest when you draw and having the potential for the slack to grab your hand or finger on the way out! And yes I’ve been shooting for 25 years when we used to wrap fast flight around a “flared” out piece of 4”PVC pipe tied to the arrow and when you’d “snap shoot” it was dangerous. Always use the safety slide, you can replace a reel but fingers...not so much.

In the heat of a busy gar shoot, my son, who ties off the back of his arrows and uses a RPM M1-X reel, got the line looped around a finger and about had it severed. I had tied off the back for 25ish years, but now use slides. The arrows don’t fly as well but that incident spooked me.

Dustin, maybe you can help me with a reel question? I have a Cajun spin doctor reel. Internally it looks very similar to the Muzzy models, almost identical. I'm used to level wind fishing reels and spinning reels, so when I retrieve line I'm expecting the spool to lay down the line evenly. This doesn't happen with the Cajun. Instead when it retrieves line it piles up the line in a soft pile that kind of slumps on itself. The rotary device with the pick up pins doesn't oscillate in and out to spread the line evenly. So, when you retrieve your arrow and the line digs into the soft pile below it causes loops to form. On the next shot, or next several shots the loops get worse and eventually they grab the line and the arrow snaps off or just stops mid-flight. The reel doesn't appear to be over loaded with line, and I've tried numerous things to fix the problem. I tried adding tension to the line during retrieve to smooth out the spool. This sorta works, but after a couple shots it's right back to being a soft pile and it stops the arrow. I tried removing some line, didn't work. The reel is brand new, still smells like factory lube. Nothing at all mechanically wrong with it. Just seems like the design is crummy, or I don't know what I'm doing? Can you help?
@DustinApple3 жыл бұрын
The reels are the exact same mold. You problem is not enough line. The spool must be 85% or better full for it to shoot proper. The line laying over itself really doesn't matter much but the 150 is worse about it than the 200# the cajun line is good stuff. Hope this helps. Put on a new spool if you have removed more than 20'

I get that we want to protect the reel but safety slide protect the shooter from injury. Id rather fix a reel than loose a finger. Just make sure you push the button or get a clutch reel. Not to mention how different rests would really cause a lot issues with back of the arrow tie.

No worries about the line being cut by the arrow hole but you should re-tie before every outing. Megamouth reels are free spool all the time so I'd say personal preference wins.

I'm new to bowfishing. I just got the Muzzy Vise kit and tied off without a slide per the instructions. Got a fish with the very first shot... but the line wrapped around my sight pin for the second shot. So, I took my sight off and fired again. Line wrapped around the bow. It doesn't make sense, I'm using the same form shown in the video and keeping my line tight against the arrow, checking it constantly. I do not have a "shoot through rod" yet but will get one asap. Will that solve this issue?
@DustinApple2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Every few shots let 4' of line hang from the reel and allow the line twist out. Line twist will cause it to do lots of weird things, try to keep it minimal. A shoot thru rod will minimize those twisted knots from wrapping around the rest of the bow. Lastly a full containment rest like a Quickdraw2 or a Mantis2 will be the best option. The vice bow is a decent budget platform. Keep playing with it, you'll get the kinks out soon enough.

@boblawton49443 жыл бұрын
Great video. Question: Do you think a safety slide would have prevented Robert Blackburn’s accident that resulted in the loss of an eye?
@DustinApple3 жыл бұрын
Robert's unfortunate incident was a alignment of multiple things happening at once. Low poundage created a sponge like bow string and excessive slack in the line that knotted around his string nock almost 2' from his arrow. 25lbs is enough to snap line if it's knots to a rigid point or if the knot just gets tight enough quickly. The fact that a low poundage bowstring is very loose, it absorbed the energy that otherwise would have snapped the line. I shot slides with a spinning reel my first 3yrs with one. I lost a lot of arrows and tore up a few reels because of it. Ive been bowfishing since 1993 and have only seen 3-4 arrows come back at me and they were from hitting shallow rocks, or powerful fish threw them. After 100s of thousands of arrows I've never seen a knot like Robert had. But as long as a slide is working properly yes it will prevent reverse energy. But ive also busted slides, busted the stoppers and tore up plastic rests because of them. All of witch had potential to send objects towards my eyes. Nothing about bowfishing is safe. Just do it however you see fit. I have no plans to use them again.

I personally would not shoot that rest unless it was a kids setup. Bristles just aren't strong enough to hold up a 1500gr arrow IMO. @Th3mast3r692 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of miss understanding about snap back and mystery knots. I have a lot of respect for Dustin Apple, but the problem with snap back is not so much of a matter of line getting tied to a stationary point on the riser or arrow rest, it's a problem when it gets tied to the bow string which acts as a spring and does NOT allow the string to break like it does if the line is anchored to a rigid stationary point. This is a major difference in the physics that is at play. With that said, I am a tie to the back shooter and always will be. I have a good understanding on why this mystery know occurs and is not so much of a mystery anymore and I know how to prevent it. It's caused by LINE TWIST. Take the time to keep your line untwisted and snap back won't happen.

How about when you get a nick in the pickup pin on the rotor? If thereis a groove in the pickup pin (caused by abrasion over time) the line will catch in it and for sure cause a flyback. It makes me wonder about the safety of that type of reel used for this purpose.. I cleaned and repaired many reels in my rod and reel shop and any closed face reel I ever repaired had this problem. What happens it when you push the button to release the rotor, the line has already slid around the rotor and caught in the nick. Just be sure you have spare rotors for your reels. I do admit I never knew of a reel I worked on to have been used this way. All the same...be careful and check the rotor pickup pin before you take it out to the fishin hole.

@DustinApple2 жыл бұрын
While his accident was unfortunate, Robert shoots more times in one night than most bowfishermen shoot all year. There are 10's of thousands of bowfishermen shooting this way witch is probably in the billions of shots if not trillions since shooting a spinning reel became popular in the 90s. I know of only 2 eye traumas that occurred in this manner. Ultimately only you can decide what is best for you. However not shooting 20-25# is the biggest factor. I've seen arrows come back in the boat after hitting a rock & I've seen safety slides shatter. Bowfishing is dangerous AF but I feel like your 100x more likely to die in a boating accident than be injured from a snap back.

@DustinApple2 жыл бұрын
Robert's incident is unfortunate however its also a freak thing that happened. You need to understand that multiple things had to go wrong at the same time for it to happen. Think about how many shooters & how many shots have taken place since a spinning real began to catch on around 30yrs ago. Millions if not billions of shots without incident. You're more likely to get struck by lightning than you are to be injured by a snap back. There's 100 things that can happen out on the water, at night, In unfamiliar areas, that are out of your control. I've seen rocks & steel send arrows back into the boat. Literally Anything can happen at any time. More bowfishermen have died from boating accidents that weren't wearing life jackets than have been injured by snapbacks. This argument will not end any time soon, the point is its not the only, nor the biggest risk you take on a daily basis. Find your own piece & enjoy the sport.
