Cutting the ends off of legs on a chair that you've just completed can feel like a scary step. Not only is it very committal, but it's really easy to over complicate. That's where the no-think method comes in!
.
I was first introduced to the idea of "no-think" methods from @eliabizzarri. The idea is that you're technically doing something quite complex, but you use simple geometric principles to guide you towards creating great results without the need for overly complex jigs and/or math equations. Elia showed me a super simple way to level chairs, and I'm proud to say I thought of one more way to take thinking out of it! Check it out to see how.

I can’t get over this complex clamped ruler guide being shown up by a literal block of wood. Touché.

I've never had any difficulty at all, with chair and stool legs. But then, I always make three-legged stools.

Great trick! My wife is shorter in stature and has for years commented on how she has to sit with her heals off the kitchen floor. Using your methodology, I did trim all four chairs and the table by 1", nothing too drastic. Surprisingly, I didn't have to square any of my cuts off as all the chairs and the table sat squarely on the floor. Thank you for sharing!

Great! Just used this to cut down the legs for a cabinet I’ve been fixing up. It was missing its legs when we bought it. I love these woodworking tips when it’s basically just “use big block of wood as reference so you make the same cut every time”. So simple!

I needed to shorten a bar stool that has legs that angle out and was dreading making a jig to do it when I thought I should check KZfaq first to see if anyone had some great idea. I'm sooo glad I did! Well, you sir are a genius! This is definitely the way to do it! I'm shocked you don't have more likes and comments on this. Even though I only have an old and dull hand saw it was still worth the manual labor because this is foolproof! Ordering a saw like yours now.

Best method I’ve seen for this. Not just the marking but the cutting idea is key. Getting a straight line that i then cut crooked doesn’t help so the technique to cut the leg straight without moving is very helpful, especially in thinking for legs I can no longer separate to bring elsewhere. Thank you!

Simple solutions are always the best aren't they, thanks for sharing! I think I'll add a couple of rare earth magnets set in the top of mine to keep the saw square :o)

Simple solution to a complex problem. Throwing away my pencil, level, framing square, speed square, slide rule, laser level, transit, compass and angle finder. Using two chunks of scrap 4x4 from now on.

Not sure a chair with a fall backwards would suit all of us. Idea: Eliminate the sawing stage by putting the plane on an adjustable block and setting it at 18" ? P.S. What sort of saw is that you used on the legs ?
