Wow! Keith knows his maths! Okay that sounded like I am surprised (and I'm not), but half my enjoyment in making things is when I can use other skills from other areas to complete a task. Like arithmetic. And I love the overall look of the bed with the nightstands - awesome.

When your stop block on the mitre saw couldn’t be used because the length of timber was too short, you could have clamped an off cut of wood to the rail. (At least it looks like you could) But jeez, the angles, they fry my head every time, nice work and a cracking piece of furniture

Beautiful job, Keith. The scale of each piece is well done and only needs a bench at the foot of the bed to complete the set. One thing to consider the next time you're cutting an angle on the table saw using a custom made jig. The jig you made was exactly right for the task so the next time try to make the stop blocks the same thickness (or a fraction thinner) as the working stock and then screwing a piece of sheet stock on the top side of the jig. This creates a sandwich to hold the stock in place without risking your fingers. Temporarily removing the blade guard will help with visibility. This method is useful unless your comfort level is telling you otherwise.
@RagnBoneBrown

Thank you! I think it's about time I made a decent tapering jig with some hold down functionality either way 👍
@daveduncan9005
@daveduncan9005 2 жыл бұрын
@@RagnBoneBrown I get the safety thing and appreciate the concerns you mentioned. I have also seen band saw blades break and how they snake all over the place. A taper jig is the better method, IMO, either shop made or store bought. Regardless, personal comfort and safety is ALWAYS a factor but I have watched you progress to journeyman ability and see no reason why a taper jig will not become your best friend in the shop. Cheers!

They have that mid century look but also look up-to-date and contemporary (current). I like everything about them especially I think the the bevel has worked as an interesting detail, was worried what they would look like on legs but I think you have pulled it off as the angle and leg taper fits with the edge bevel, excellent one of the best set of night stand builds I've seen well done!

It's always interesting to me how different people think about math. At the beginning, when you were talking about how 0 on the miter saw is actually 90 degrees, I'm thinking "right, so subtract it from 90 and you're good" but then you subtracted 45 and I scratched my head. Then you subtracted that result from 45 and I got a little less confused: 45 - (x - 45) = 45 - x + 45 = 90 - x. I'm not really sure what motivates you pivoting around the middle of the angle (I guess because you think of it as deviating from a 45 degree miter?), but what matters is that the final number is right. I just thought I'd throw this out here in case "if your desired angle is measured from straight instead of from the right angle that is 0 degrees on your miter saw gauge, you can convert by subtracting your desired angle from 90 degrees" makes more sense to someone else.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting... Let me start by saying that I'm useless at maths, and I've only really understood angles via my own learnings and mistakes rather than possibly learning it "the right way"! But I always think of angles in a dissected way in terms of woodworking (hence the 90 is 2x 45s, and I tend to always use that as a starting point, hence the deducting 45 rather than 90. Your comment made me think!
@benwake4823
@benwake4823 2 жыл бұрын
@@RagnBoneBrown Sure, that makes sense. Like I said, the important thing is coming up with the right answer, and any way that works for you works. That said, much like you talk about in this video in terms of woodworking techniques, I find it really valuable to be able to look at the same math problem in multiple different ways. If one way isn't working for you, you've got another. If you try two strategies and get the same result, you can have more confidence in it. If you're trying to explain to someone else, you've got more tricks in the bag in case one way works better for them.

Less chance for errors if you set your miter saw angle only once, and flip the block of wood around, rather then change the saw angle to the opposite side. But I recon you already know this. It must have all worked itself out anyway. ... Now back to the show.
