In this video I plant 2 small food plots using the no till planting method. One of the plots is half beans and the other half buckwheat. I no tilled the beans and buckwheat into the standing rye cover crop. The soybeans didn’t turn out like I wanted them too, the germination really suffered due to the lack of rain after planting but the buckwheat turned out ok and I recently planting my brassicas into the buckwheat and crushed it all down.

Did no till on my plots too this year. Trick is to wait until you have 2-3 days of solid rain in the forcast. Even if they go in late thats better than sitting for a week on hot, dry, soil and getting rain. Keep it up!

I would agree but It was late May early June and I figured we would get rain sometime in week after planting. Usually that’s one of the wettest times of the year.

@@wisconsinwhitetail9744 I feel ya. Idk how people don't have plot failures all the time. It seems that they're just so rain dependant even with the no till rye/ buckwheat cover
@wisconsinwhitetail9744
@wisconsinwhitetail9744 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidmartin8823 when tilling you are able to work the seed into the soil when packing so a lack of moisture won’t dry the seed out as bad, but no till the seed sits right on top of the hard ground, even if it’s covered by something like rye you will need moisture for it to take root. Soybeans need a good rain in the forecast when planting like this and when you have a normal year they usually turn out just as good as tilling.

Going to try it this year , getting ready to plant buckwheat so I'll have something to roll this fall . Liked how you knocked it down > questions dose it ever get to much on the ground to plant into after years of doing it and on a small plot I get a lot of leaves ( to many to plant into ) , I see where you have a lot of trees on your small plot too ?? Thank you .

Yes letting the rye get tall is not a good idea. After 1 yr it becomes too much of a thatch layer to seed into. I would recommend spraying and tilling if you have rye seeded into your plots. Till and plant buckwheat in mid June and no till brassicas into the buckwheat when the buckwheat flowers out.

I have never tried mowing it to terminate the rye. I suppose it probably would kill it if you wait to mow when it’s tall and when the plant is just starting to dry down then it won’t come back.

I would have to agree, if you let it dry down and die once you crush it down and it comes into contact with soil and some moisture a lot of it may germinate. If you leave it standing it probably won’t though. That would be an interesting thing to try. You probably would have to plant early July which is a little early but won’t be the end of the world. I would try it on half your plot next year if you really want to. That would be an interesting thing to try for people who don’t want to use chemicals.

Thanks for showing the struggle with the drought this year. Had the same conditions in north central Wisconsin too. Is there a link you could share as to the type of drag you used. It looks like it does a great job. I was looking at paying a guy about $2200 next spring to build me a crimper. Will that drag crush buckwheat the same or just ball-up and drag mounds of it around?
@wisconsinwhitetail9744
@wisconsinwhitetail9744 3 жыл бұрын
kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKycitKkz6_LnX0.html Here’s a video of pretty much the same drag/harrow. All the new ones made today are basically a chain fence and don’t weigh enough to crush down the rye. These old school drags are around 75-100lbs and do a good job after 2-3 passes on the rye. As you can tell in this video they are very old pieces of equipment. We have a couple drags, they were all my grandpas that he used when planting alfalfa. We also have his old cultipacker that I use sometimes. The drag is easier to transport from property to property and probably cheaper to buy. Look on Facebook marketplace for some old ones.

75-100#/acre for buckwheat. Any heavier and it can get to be too thick and the brassica seed won't get enough sun to germinate.

After you crush it down it won’t matter how thick it was planted but yeah I would agree 75-100lbs is best. You want it to smother out weeds but not choke itself.

When do you burn/spray the rye grain. Before or after you seed?
@wisconsinwhitetail9744
@wisconsinwhitetail9744 2 жыл бұрын
Directly after you seed. Expect slow growth from the beans for the first couple weeks. They may look kinda stressed. Sometimes they take some time to push throughout the thatch layer if the rye was very thick. But once there up and have a couple leaves on them they start to take off. The bad thing from using this method definitely the slow growth the first month and if you don’t get rain they WONT germinate until you do. But the good thing about this method is you hardy get any weeds in the plots. The rye layer does a really good job of choking out weeds. But spray earlier than later even if there isn’t many weeds, if you wait to long the beans will be too tall and you’ll damage them. Spraying a pre emergent Simazine with a post emergent like glyphosate would be best at the 3 week stage when the beans are up and not many weeds have show up.

Deer don’t eat buckwheat so you wouldn’t want to plant in the fall for a hunt plot. It is used as a cover crop in the summer that you can seed brassicas into in aug. you plant it in early to mid June and seed brassicas into the standing buckwheat in late July or early aug and then crush the buckwheat down. It’s just a cover crop.
@jesseteick891

To me it doesn't make sense to plant rye or buck wheat then have smash it down then have to kill it. Keep the food plot free of weeds until last week of July. Plant purple top turnips from Deer Creek Seed out of Wisconsin it will never let you down. From Early season to late, the deer will love it. Don't mess around with any other ways
@wisconsinwhitetail9744
@wisconsinwhitetail9744 2 жыл бұрын
Keeping the ground clear the whole summer up until aug when you plant either takes tilling or spraying multiple times throughout the summer to keep the ground clear of weeds. Not many people want to do that. I like to seed some rye into my brassicas in September to add more green tonnage and when it comes back in the spring instead of killing it when it’s short I wait until early June to seed my buckwheat in when the rye is 4-6ft tall. The buckwheat is just a cover crop and a soil builder. It does the same job as spraying or tilling multiple times would do. It smothers out the weeds and around aug I seed in brassicas and crush and kill the buckwheat.
