I wanted to get better at drawing, so I made myself draw every day. It actually did become a chore, like scrubbing the toilet, and eventually I considered giving up art journaling. Made me so sad. I had lost the joy of drawing and making messes in my books. When I gave myself permission to stop drawing, I found that wasn't an option. I did a terrible urban sketch and wrote JOY at the bottom. That's my reminder. And it's gotten better💯

Also, I work in stages and occasionally just use a cellphone photo to remind me what my brain had planned. Edit the photo with the broad strokes, composition, or notes you don't want to forget. Your camera is already in the phone.

I’ve bought a number of pens, watercolors, acrylic paints, paper, etc. but just cannot find the time to create art (the video you linked is a great help with this). I want to do a little everyday but always felt I need a big block of time. Bottom line, this video is precisely what I needed to hear. Thank you for the wonderful ideas and insight.

I keep a watercolor sketchbook, and one thing that's really helped me is having a setup, and I clean up and prepare for the next time, so there's zero resistance to starting. Also every time I stop for the day, I always leave my sketchbook open and turned to a page I'm proud of. Something about that entices me to go look at it again, and then suddenly I'm working on something! And I keep it small, I agree that's a really good tip as well!

Yes to everything you said! That's how I try to approach art. Stop overthinking it. For me it's not about being an artist. Or making art even. It's about playing and laughing. Expressing. Combining. Interacting. Erasing. Painting over top of. Gluing. Splashing. Just get at it! ❤

Thank you for the tips on finding time to do art. I appreciate the fact that you get people to understand that it is okay to take time for art. Some people are brought up with the idea that they should not take time for self care and nourishment. I love being in the zone even for just a few minutes. You gave me things to think about that I had not even thought of.

Yes, art is therapeutic, it does so much good in this field. At the same time we should not stifle Olympic hopefuls. They might serve as as inspiration rather than an enemy? Back in school on sports day participants got a certificate just for taking part which was a lovely acknowledgement. And also those who reached or practiced greater skill were honoured for their effort. Unthinkable these days!. We are not allowed to look up- or look over to those who have trodden a lone path which led them to greatness. Anything can be 'art' these days, even a signed toilet. Just swim in mediocre soup. Sorry about my blackpilled ramble on your feed but you asked. Hey, I am subscribed for my regular boot up the backside! Yes, I practice 'art' as I enjoy how it changes my vision rather than what I produce. But man, that feeling of of awe pouring from your heart when seeing excellence is just well... awe. Playing is an indulgence which some of us can only part take in to some degree so your message of: get off idle scrolling and pick up that pen is good advice. Bye :)

Anyone can be an artist? In my town there is a place called Spindleworks that brings together the works of physically and/or mentally challenged citizens. I dare anyone to NOT call them artists! And at my local art store, there is a bowl of chalk on the outside table, with a sign encouraging people to draw on the sidewalk👨‍🎨 Plus, our town square hosts a farm market every week in the summer - a great source of inspiration 😊

thank you for the video. Wanted to ask, what do you do with the art that you've made? The sketchbooks you've filled, the random leaflets you doodled on the back of. I've drawn since I was a kid, but I've always wondered what the point of holding on to 10s or 100s of sketchbooks were if I knew that they would just be more to carry around as I moved. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this, thank you. Take care.

The point isn’t to have lots of art you’ve made. It’s to make lots of art. The process over the product. I have my sketchbooks on a book shelf and I like looking back at them. But they are just the memories of the fun I had making them. Like Instagram photos of good meals.

Sometimes I feel like a bundle of contradictions! I can enjoy sketching for 10 minutes, but if I know I’ve only got 10 minutes I usually rush and panic and it ends up rubbish! I think of myself as an artistic person, but I don’t feel able to call myself an artist…. Yet I don’t even know what the distinction is! Haha

Every time i feel artblocked and that i dont have a time to draw, i look whats up. Like so, recently, i realized i only have time for few second sketches and they feel like they are gonna be too messy. Which exactly was the reason for mini artblock - i felt like i dont want to "ruin" my current one. Which is ridiculous, but, thats the tipy of inner thoughts that you cant control sometimes, you need to find ways around them. So i just started new tiny notebook for those messy second doodles and instantly it releaved me psychologically and i draw again

@heikesiegl2640

I don't think motovation is a problem. If you are Not motovated, don't do it. I think the real problem are expectations. Most people (especially ones new to the hobby) think about drawing as a huge thing. You need a work station with all your things, you need everything at Hand all the time, drawing means a perfect copy and that costs time. If people where looser and less afraid of making something imperfect, they wouldnt fear starting

Agree with all tips you provided Danny ( @SketchbookSkool ) except - "We don't have to finish our art in single session". As someone else pointed out that an art session is like an symphony orchestra which can not be paused in the middle and resumed after a break. Because the lack of continuity (flow) that a creative activity demands. Also knowledge workers like us, who carry a lot in our heads post work hours into our personal lives, kind of creates barriers to do any art work even casual one. Any suggestions ?
