Our remote control indicated that the tower lights were out so someone had to physically check them. In this quick video I travel to the transmitter site to check the lights, attempt to fix them, and then call the FAA.

When I worked at the commercial radio station I had to call one in to the FAA as well. Give the Lat/Long in 1.)Degrees 2.)Minutes 3.)Seconds so they could locate it correctly. Luckily I was told (as the overnight guy) where ALL the info was kept so I could call it in.

They take Antenna Structure Registration numbers now...makes it a lot easier! :)

Yeah, interesting. Nice to see just how hard it is to see those. Makesbyou really appreciate when they are lit. When flying I just avoided the red flashing lights, never gave much thought to how much I didn't see and never had a NOTAM to be on the lookout for a unlit tower.... New perspective indeed. A recap at the end where you play the local NOTAM for the tower and share the root cause/fix would be interesting also.

I will share the outcome for sure however I am not sure I want to give the NOTAM out since that would indicate the location of the tower. I appreciate you watching.

Working on the airfield we called the obstruction lights, ob lights for short. You could probably have something LED now that would last a long time put in there. Most of the equipment we had them on had to use incandescent bulbs.

We don't have an LED system but I would love to move to one.

Don’t forget to cancel the NOTAM when you get the lights fixed. I forgot to once and got a nice call from the FAA. Then a couple of days later the FCC. Nothing came of it, they were nice. Cancelled the NOTAM and filed that away should I ever have to call for one again. Sorry you had a late night call out for tower lights. Always frustrating for me when I can’t get something back up (even on a backup system).

I am glad they were nice. They were really nice last night as well. Do you have a website you use to look up NOTAMs? I just want to see what it says as this was the first time I had to actually call.

@@TVJAY the Notice to airmen is part of the pilots brief and is attained when a pilot gets weather and/ATIS data.... There are commercial websites a FBO/airport/airline might subscribe to. Not sure if there are any free services that provide them online (never looked). I generally got my briefings by calling the free ATIS or automated report number that would read the NOTAM report to you, give you wind speed and direction, etc. Each airport is published in a directory that contains the phone numbers and other info to access local conditions for free, or file flight reports, etc...

Clark Griswold would have that thing lit up like a Christmas tree in no time.

FAA my tower lights are out! Oops! I been learning for my drone test so I know what a “notice to airman” was.

I learned what a NOTAM was via my drone studies as well
