The Great War

6 жыл бұрын

The negotiations between the Bolsheviks, the German High Command and Austria-Hungary reach a new low this week 100 years ago. Leon Trotsky is playing for time since the revolutions in Berlin and Vienna are only a matter of time in his opinion. At the same time, the Ukrainians are try to get German aid against the Bolsheviks against Ukrainian grain for the starving German population.

We won't get much coverage of the thousands of bureaucrats who kept the war effort going- organizing supplies, purchasing armaments, telling arms makers what to produce, directing civilian and military food supplies, arranging imports where applicable, borrowing money to pay for this mess, collecting taxes... Not a lot of pictures, few if any wrote books on their 4 years at some government department in Berlin, London, Rome or Vienna.......

Mr Neidell and his team produce outstanding weekly and special episodes. I fell that I am meeting a friend sharing interesting and often moving stories. I was moved to tears when he read the poem: GAS, GAS, GAS. As a Canadian, I am proud of our contribution during the war. If you meet a Canadia ask him/her to recite: "In Flander's Fields. Most of us can recite it from memory; it is part of our DNA. I humbly provided a few French translations.

I’m surprised Haig didn’t get torpedoed crossing back and forth to RBE from the Allied front during this time. It’s not like he flew with airplane technology still in its infantile state. Risk crashing in flight or torpedoed on a battle ship?

I kinda see why the war couldn't continue much longer, one way or the other. It feels like all the countries are spiraling out of control.

The plots in the British High Command are almost like a 20th century version of the War of the Roses: so many people fighting over power that it becomes very hard to keep all the relationships straight.

Are you planning to talk in depth about the influenza outbreak of 1918 and it's affects on the war, the Powers, the people, and the troops? *is hopeful*

Kaiserschlacht is only around 1 month away. Hard to imagine the nervous feelings of the soldiers waiting in the trenches 100 years ago now. It's like you are guarding your farm, and you know a tiger is about to jump over the fence and start slaughtering both your families and your livestocks, but you just don't know where.

Sees, what a mess. With all of those silly machinations in Britain, the Germans should easily be able to overwhelm the western front now!
