It was the English who called it Soccer originally, we just refused to change to Football when the English changed their minds after WWII. We get blamed for using the original Victorian name for the game, but it was the English who invented the word. The US isn’t the only country that uses the term. Some of the commonwealth countries do as well.

Some of the chants need a little context to understand. For instance, "There's only one Ed Woodward." That was at Old Trafford, Manchester United's stadium, and Ed Woodward is executive vice-chairman of Manchester United. He's not popular with MU fans, and had been accused of ruining the club. It was the away fans singing about how great he was because he'd ruined ManU. Most fan songs/chants are of two types, every team has a song of some sort that the fans sing as an anthem. Liverpool's "You'll never walk alone" is one very well known example, but every team has them. They'll be sung spontaneously by fans. Then there's the chants that break out in the course of a game in response to something that just happened, a simple rhythm and a few short phrases that someone comes up with and starts singing with their mates before the rest of the stand picks up on it.

@Isleofskye
@Isleofskye 3 жыл бұрын
As always I enjoyed your reaction. When you said that chant immediately followed on from the previous one, it can be like that thru' the whole game especially the Away fans section who have travelled, sometimes from one end of the country to the other by coach or train to support their team. An example was the "dick". That was Sunderland fans from the North East coming down all the way to play in London and their Dutch Manager was Dick Advocaat. They were spontaneous chants like the "Who's the dickhead in the White?" but most fans are familiar with many songs sung at every game. English / Scottish fans along with most World Club (Team) fans do NOT want to hear any orchestrated stadium music.

The boris Johnson thing is probably more spontaneous than you think. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say they’re Crystal Palace fans. The song they start singing is to the tune of “glad all over” and it is that song with only a few words changed. Glad all over is a palace anthem so it isn’t a big jump. Boris Johnson is the prime minster. If you have a look at his mad hair then look at the match official you’ll see what’s happened there.

There are a good few football clubs in the UK owned by American businessmen these days, including some of the highest profile clubs in England and a few in Scotland. In Scotland, both senior clubs in Dundee (Dundee United and Dundee) are now owned by Americans. Both clubs stadiums have the closest proximity to each other of any local rivals anywhere in the world, because they are only 89 metres apart! The owner of Dundee United, who took over the club in 2019, wants to overturn the ban on alcohol sales at stadiums as an additional source of revenue, but it's difficult to imagine it being allowed, given the behaviour of fans who've most likely already got drunk at pubs(bars) before they go to a game.

Thing is here we don’t give a fuck and just take the piss out of each other so this back and fourth in the stands is a very normal thing. We don’t rehearse any song at all. It just the way it happens over here where we are perfectly in sink because we remember the songs we sing off by heart and we know to keep to the same tune and timing
