Empress ..HA HA Great reaction This song is about a guy who meets a girl (Lola) in a club who takes him home and rocks his world. The twist comes when we find out that Lola is a man. As stated in The Kinks: The Official Biography, Ray Davies wrote the lyrics after their manager got drunk at a club and started dancing with what he thought was a woman. Toward the end of the night, his stubble started showing, but their manager was too tanked to notice.

This song came out at a time when talking about LGBTQIA people would get a song banned from the radio. This was cleverly worded so that one *could* interpret that line "I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola" to mean Lola is glad the singer is a man. It was *just* enough to get it aired on the more "daring" starions.

I couldn't wait to watch your face as the song progressed. As it dropped little clues along the way your facial expressions were quizzical but you kept right on listening/ Then when you realized the songs true meaning, your expression was priceless. I've watched a load of reactions to "Lola" and a few of them didn't realise what the song was about. I feel that you had a suspicion very early in the song and your reaction when it was confirmed was absolutely priceless. The best yet. I've been a Kinks fan since their first single in the early sixties. That gives my age away. Ray Davies was the best storyteller in the sixties in my opinion because he never conformed to the norm. He just came out with fabulous lyrics. Autumn Almanac, Come Dancing. The list is far too big to put here. Brilliant. I loved this video.

Davies claimed that he was inspired to write “Lola” after Kinks manager Robert Wace spent a night in Paris dancing with a transgender woman. However, Mick Avory claimed that the song was inspired by his frequenting of transgender bars in west London.
