Noah Ice here! This is my personal setup, a Gretsch Round Badge in Moonglow Satin Flame. These drums are a 20/12/14” Progressive Jazz outfit that I found here at Maxwell’s along with just about everything else I use. I change my setups very often, so I made some changes between tunings.
Low Tuning Setup - I used my “Garbage Pioneer” WFL snare drum. I found this drum digging through dumpsters in Chicago. (Just kidding; free Craigslist!) Cymbals are all Istanbul Agop, from left to right they are: 14” 30th Anniversary hats, 21” Mel Lewis ride sans rivets, 20” Signature crash, 22” Traditional Dark crash (now replaced with a 22” Original ride).
High Tuning Setup - I used a 60’s Acrolite that was a gift from a good friend that is probably watching - howdy and thank you! Cymbals left to right are: The same 30th Anniversary hats, 21” pre-split Mel Lewis ride (1 rivet), 20” 30th Anniversary ride, and the same 20” Signature crash.
Thanks for watching!

Hey Noah! Gonzalo from San Juan. Beautiful fluid playing & great sounding kit. I’m also a Gretsch guy(RB circa 66-67),Istanbul Agops & mostly Ludwig Snares. Dang!There must something there🤣.

Till now, I always persisted in my love for drumkits from the 90s, such as my Premier Genista (damask red: 20/16, 10/8, 12/9, 13/9, 15/12, 16/16, 14/6.5 snare). My interest is moving more and more to the vintage ...this vid is one of the reasons :) Cheers from the Netherlands

I play a 1979-1980 gretsch (transition badge)with 18 kick, 12 and 15 toms. That’s right, a rare 15 floor tom that’s the best of both worlds. Red walnut finish. Istanbul Agop (various models) but my fav 22 is a 30th anniversary early model. Lathing, hammering and finish is different than current models, and looks and sounds more like a $2,500 old K

Those sound FANTASTIC! I have a 60s round badge kit, but in 13, 16, 20... and I occasionally use a '67 Supraphonic. I wish I had the 12 and 14 toms instead. Those cymbals also...perfect.

Both tunings and both snares were beautiful sounding. Always enjoy hearing you play! BTW, my first snare drum was a Pioneer, which I bought back in the mid-sixties.

Liked the pitch interval of the cymbals, it sounded almost perfect to my ears. As per my usual I have a hard time liking myself the Gretsch's and this time as well the BD was kinda lacking presence IMHO but hey that's just me ;-) Among the many good things, great use of the dynamics you do!!!!! Applause!

Beautiful kit Noah. Really dig the finish and they sound amazing! Had KZfaq pulled up on my TV and had to get headphones and listen a second time. I'm typically a jazz tuning guy, but those drums in the low tuning with that Luddy snare are to die for! Always love your playing and you just look so relaxed and swung so hard behind your personal kit. Very cool, and you last name is Ice? How cool is that? ( Sorry, I had to)
@noahice

That finish was well worth the wait! I have tuned my drums low for a long time, but am starting to like higher tunings more and more. I like that these drums can accomplish both nicely. Thank you for the kind words, and I'm always okay with name puns, seems like the cool thing to do. (-:

I'm a little late on this - but beautiful kit and playing :) What is the typical mic setup that you use when recording drums in these videos? I like the natural sound you capture. Also, nice WFL Pioneer - I've got a few of these from 5.5 - 6.5 and they are some of my favorites.

Great sounding drums.. Do you tune the same way as Steve, or do you have your own method..?
@noahice
@noahice 2 жыл бұрын
I've taken lots of pointers from Steve, we differ a bit for snares and bass drums. Specifically I muffle my bass drums a lot and purposely detune 1-3 lugs on my snare drum; usually the ones away from me that are a little under my hihat so I don't hit the dead spot. It takes a lot of the ring away and keeps it dry and snappy. Thanks Roy!
